How Did Actor Ashley Strand Memorize OVER 10,000 Words & Deliver Them Live On Stage In Record Time?
When Ashley Strand told me about his live performances of The Book of Mark, I knew I had to interview him.
In this wide-ranging discussion, we talk about the "real work" that goes into memorizing a verbatim text of over 10,000 words.
Whether it's Shakespeare or scripture, I can tell that Ashley really knows his stuff. And as a huge fan of live theatre, I wanted to spread the word about his performances.
Plus, I've memorized texts totalling over 2000 words in Sanskrit. So I think you'll appreciate some of the granular details we get into based on our shared experiences.
We discuss, for example, the importance of textual analysis as an aid to memory.
Then there are some fantastic strategies related to the Memory Palace technique that will help pull you through some of the stickier elements that arise when memorizing verbatim.
The way Ashley combines the method of loci with textual analysis is super-fascinating.

    Greetings Dr. Anthony, you’ve been putting across some great videos giving all of us new perspectives with every video. I wanted to enquire from you, Like the memory palace techniques which leverages on hooking pieces of information with spatial locations which one is conversant with, in a similar way will using famous paintings or pictures be equally good in which pieces of information are hooked with distinct objects inside the paintings? In my limited understanding as a memory enthusiast I feel both work on the same principle, and also there’s no dirth of paintings available online with which one can familiarise themselves, instead of looking at the complex spatial pathways, which may seem overwhelming, that is to have a collection of several memory palaces. Looking forward to hear about your thoughts on this. Warm Regards.

      Yes, you can definitely do these things. The question to be asked is: Do you want to use Memory Palaces or Memorized Palaces. Any time you have to look something up to either learn or even familiarize yourself with it, you are out of the realm of using an actual Memory Palace. This is because Memory Palaces are just that: based on what you remember. Memorized Palaces, on the hand, are quite different, add cognitive load (usually unnecessarily) and are not as immediately available for many of us. Ultimately, each person has to experiment and decide for themselves how viable the approach is. I've done a lot of experiments and ultimately concluded that using Memory Palaces and not Memorized Palaces is the right approach for me. Does this way of looking at things make sense and help you out?

    My strategy is if it has one, is to read the glossary first and see which words I know already. Then, the table of contents, then look at the pictures or diagrams if it has those. Then if the book has summaries read those. If it has a for dummies or introducing whatever type books available, go to those. first. A lot of profound authors are just lousy writers. Comic books are best things ever. Read Gonicks Cartoon Guides twice and it's equivalent to a history degree. But a lot of folks who make those things can't draw worth a flip.

      Priming in the way you suggest is indeed a best practice with books set up for it. I’ll have to check out the comics you mention. Normally, I don’t find the comic format conducive to the nuances history requires, but some of them do contain lots of names and other books for further reading. And I haven’t heard of the exact series you mentioned until now.

Any publisher can hook you up wih the best person. But you need to figure out your look or it won't be what you want. Most public libraries have piles of graphic novels now. Simonides did not "invent" the memory palace, I'm not sure why this persists in the west. It was a common technique in ancient Greece. The Greeks also used songlines and ritual dance like the aboriginals. A good example is as part of mystery initiation. For example, initiates would walk 17km as part of a procession from Athens of Eleusina for the Eleusinian Mysteries, performing certain acts/dances along the way, singing specific songs, and stopping at several landmarks to mime stories. The Odyssey is essentially a giant songline outlining the journey of the soul among other things. Remember, the Greeks are also indigenous to the Aegean (known as Pelasgians in their more primitive epoch), and are therefore "aboriginals". In my mind the memory palace is simply an evolution of songlines. At the time of Simonides, the songlines remained in use to pass on community knowledge (public or hidden), while the memory palace was used on an individual basis.

    Dear Dr. Metivia, I am in love with everything you say here. You have brought the world of memorization to life. I am a Neuro linguistic programmer. As such I would like to bring one thing to your attention here. Some people jump out of windows and fly across city's in their memory system. It's really quite normal. It's how they get to their outrageousness. Once the chemicals and synapsis of the brain set up their little system of getting where they are going it doesn't matter what they think. For me what might be too outrageous may be the best memory palace for them. Crazy associations are relative. I love the walk through. It is the standard. We are all different. JUST LOVE YOUR STUFF!!! Your The Best. Anthony R. Mellard CP NLP Ct Hyp. PS You have the ability to project the electricity of your brain out through the screen of my computer. It is quite astounding. Thanks for your kind words. Indeed the actions you mention can be done inside of Memory Palaces. My teaching simply asks the question: Why add actions that have to be remembered? Then it removes all of that stuff. No one is required to follow the recommendation raised by the question, but a Memory Palace is really only a location-based mnemonic if it is based on what one remembers of the Memory Palace. Adding elements that have to be remembered makes it a "Memorized Palace" and that is something for others to teach. Does this way of looking at things make sense?

    • @Spitfireseven

      @@AnthonyMetivierMMM WOW!! You responded! I am following your instructions as closely as possible. You have to sit down and concentrate, take notes and make associations. So far what I can get from this is that when you use three different mental reference points it helps things to stick. I am using the Memory Palace to get all 78 tarot cards in my head. It takes the locality, the card, it's meaning and commits them to the brain. My shortcut is to place all of the seven's for instance, four of them on one card. I do this for the one through ten cards and do the memory palace routine. Wow!! This is working fabulously well!! I have a video on CZcams. Tony Wylder: Yellow Dress. This was done at The Broward Center for the Performing Arts. In it I forgot the lyrics in front of a concert crowd. It all got a great laugh and applause because the audience was forgiving. Caring for a small human, there are very few moments where you have your hands free. Mnemonics, on the other hand is almost entirely mental, it can be broken down into tiny recall sessions, it’s scalable. It makes the singing more interesting. And there's the added bonus of the extra appreciation I gain for each song when I study them like this!

      That is an interesting point. I once heard someone say that memorizing the lyrics down pat is the key to interpreting the song while performing it. All the better when they've been interpreted. You might like "The Real Work" book by Adam Gopnik I mentioned at the end of this interview. There's a whole part about music and lyrics at the end that I thought was interesting - especially in terms of how open-ended lyrics tend to be and often so very disjointed when encountered without the music.

    How can you make such a long video, and not explain clearly just simply how to do this? I really care about this and want to learn, but I re watch every 15 seconds over and over 5 times, and try to understand what did I miss because the examples are not clear and straight forward. Like "you do A, then B, then C, link to D, go over to E, done". I was replaying this video for almost an hour, trying to find where did I miss where you explain how exactly step by step to make these places in the memory palace reference other places, with a simple clear example... so I can just go "ok, and go do it and practice".. instead I'm frustrated trying to figure out did you even explain it, and if you did, where... I apologize for being so critical, I just feel I didn't find the actual action steps I was trying hard to find here.

      Thanks for your questions. A few answers: 1) I can make content like this because I’ve built an audience familiar with the Memory Palace technique and who appreciate this kind of analysis. I believe you’ll find that other comments bear this observation out - these come from people who like you and I care about this tradition. 2) There are specific steps that I have suggested in this video. I have heard from many people via email who have completed them. I apologize if you missed them. Over hundreds of videos, and after nearly a decade of teaching at three universities in three countries and two languages, I have no explanation for why the steps are clear and evident to some and not to others. To my knowledge, pedagogy has never solved this problem. I’m aware of the literature about it and await some theorist to suggest something that makes a difference. All I can suggest is that people look at my 700+ videos on this channel and understand that it’s not for a lack of trying on my part. I wish you great success and if you follow the steps in this and my other videos, I’d love to see your homework. I receive homework from people every single day and share it in many of my videos. 🙏

    Thank you , one doubt, if we need to learn more german vocabularies eg: more than 100 in an alphabet A itself ,then how could i add more stations within a house, I have created 26 palaces for each german alphabets, and i need to add as much as vocabularies starting in "A" palace itself ,how can i do

      One thing that helps scale is to compound each word with a phrase. Start with the alphabetical approach and then when you add phrases to each established word you scale to dozens, sometimes 100 or more within individual rooms of the Memory Palace.

    Interesting! The statue within statue within statue is quite fractalian, no? It reminds me of the concept of naturans. And if I understand the implications correctly, using this together with the memory wheel, one ends up with something like a mind map of interconnected memory palaces? Impressive Two additional quick questions: - Isn't 00-99 PAO a derivative of the Major system? - I want to read Flyboy for the summer vacation. Where is the best place to buy it from? As ever, you have my thanks for this excellent content. Good luck on Vitamin X, I hope your muse is kind to you.

      @AnthonyMetivierMMM Před 9 dny

      Yes, you could think of it as something like a mind map. Some people base the 00-99 PAO on the Major, but the Major itself is derivative of the Katapayadi. Thanks for your interest in Flyboy. It is available directly from me. Just shout out by email if you can't find the portal into it by searching for it. Thanks too for your kind words and Vitamin X is on its way. The first draft is finished and the muse has been very kind indeed. Mnemosyne serves!

    Even the Alexandrian manuscript did not get into the hands of Bible translators until 1628, after the King James Bible of 1611 had been published. So the foundation for a Bible far more accurate and understandable than the Authorized Version has been laid since 1611. Bit of history for you.

    ten thousand lines is what gets people 99% marks in acads. man even with mnemonics its super huge. mnemonics can help me complete a book in a week, but it is superrrrrrrr hard to make the mnemonics. and i do not like AI. I have also tried the techniques that you've taught but, making creative lines for every single sentence oh boy! works but very hard. it would be so nice if someone wrote physics, chem and bio in a mnemonic way.

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM Před 9 dny

      How are you making your mnemonics? “Making” anything is not at all what I teach - even if the words “make” and “create” are sometimes used. Have I ever seen your homework? There are guides people have created for physics and probably chemistry. It shouldn’t be necessary, though. The five main mnemonic systems are all you need.
