- When Ashley Strand told me about his live performances of The Book of Mark, I knew I had to interview him.
In this wide-ranging discussion, we talk about the "real work" that goes into memorizing a verbatim text of over 10,000 words.
Whether it's Shakespeare or scripture, I can tell that Ashley really knows his stuff. And as a huge fan of live theatre, I wanted to spread the word about his performances.
Plus, I've memorized texts totalling over 2000 words in Sanskrit. So I think you'll appreciate some of the granular details we get into based on our shared experiences.
We discuss, for example, the importance of textual analysis as an aid to memory.
Then there are some fantastic strategies related to the Memory Palace technique that will help pull you through some of the stickier elements that arise when memorizing verbatim.
The way Ashley combines the method of loci with textual analysis is super-fascinating.

Ready for something related that completely blows my mind? While recovering from cardiac arrest, Matt Barclay also memorized a ton of scripture and recited it live. Here's his story and tips to watch next: czcams.com/video/XiY58Z1ApCc/video.html
Great interview.
đ Thanks as always for checking these out!
Prof. Metivier youâre great!!!
Thanks so much for checking this one out and for your kind words.
Have you ever done any acting yourself or memorized verbatim text of any length like this?
This is the kind of conversation I just love listening to. Thanks for sharing!
Glad it resonated and thanks for checking it out and letting me know.
Have you ever acted or thought about doing it?
@@AnthonyMetivierMMM Oh no, Veronica is the actor! But I feel like the singing while playing guitar that I do is similar in a lot of ways to acting. Especially when Ashley was talking about considering the meaning of each word/phrase and how to approach them based on that. I've done a lot of deep dives into song lyrics to really get a feel for them. I change things like my tempo or loudness (sometimes for individual words) depending on the meaning & mood. It makes the singing more interesting. And there's the added bonus of the extra appreciation I gain for each song when I study them like this!
That is an interesting point. I once heard someone say that memorizing the lyrics down pat is the key to interpreting the song while performing it. All the better when they've been interpreted.
You might like "The Real Work" book by Adam Gopnik I mentioned at the end of this interview. There's a whole part about music and lyrics at the end that I thought was interesting - especially in terms of how open-ended lyrics tend to be and often so very disjointed when encountered without the music.
ten thousand lines is what gets people 99% marks in acads. man even with mnemonics its super huge. mnemonics can help me complete a book in a week, but it is superrrrrrrr hard to make the mnemonics. and i do not like AI. I have also tried the techniques that you've taught but, making creative lines for every single sentence oh boy! works but very hard.
it would be so nice if someone wrote physics, chem and bio in a mnemonic way.
How are you making your mnemonics? âMakingâ anything is not at all what I teach - even if the words âmakeâ and âcreateâ are sometimes used. Have I ever seen your homework?
There are guides people have created for physics and probably chemistry. It shouldnât be necessary, though. The five main mnemonic systems are all you need.
@@AnthonyMetivierMMM I have followed your compartments within apartments kind of Mnemonics technique where I go through each and every object present in my room. Yes, that is awesome. Works! But building a creative image around it is the hard part. Its been about 2 months since when I watched it, and still I have only completed 2 chapters of biology with about 100 lines memorized. 50 per chapter.
"Making" and "building" images are not part of my teaching. I'd suggest learning the Magnetic Memory Method.
Wow!
I started watching this and was just hooked throughout the whole thing!
Thank you for the great work!
Thanks for checking it out and commenting.
Itâs been awhile - how have you been?
Doing great - has been a rough year so far, but Iâm really making progress with French and Mem-Deck thanks to the MMM (Masterclass) and your Books.
And also, keep up the long-form content!
Always glad to see your posts
Great to hear about the progress, even if these are challenging times.
More and more the long form content is going here:

Or at least podcasts where there's no need to get on camera as such.
Anything you'd like to see covered in a future video?

Iâd love to see a kind of list of Memory-techniques video.
Iâve seen you already done something like that, but iâd really enjoy more of that.
Otherwise more breathing/relaxing techniques would be very much appreciated.
Thanks for your contribution to Memory and mental wellbeing!
I've subscribed you channel from 7 of my google account. I hope you will reach 100k Soon. Thanks for all the valuable information you provide for free
Thanks kindly for your support.
I suspect the platforms know that people do this, so it might be weeded out - especially if you're saying so publicly. As an alternative, regular commenting and sharing the videos on multiple platforms is another great way to help.
I know a lot of people don't post much on platforms, but nonetheless, it is a helpful way to get the word out for those who can (and a legit way that the algos love).
great ,I didn't know this kind of feat was possible thanks anthony for let us know
You bet!
Have you memorized any scripture of any kind yourself so far?
@@AnthonyMetivierMMM no but perhaps with thĂŠ help of magnetic memory masterclass i would try ..
I think you'll find the "Magnetic SRS" in the poetry course very useful if you want to develop your mnemonic tools for this kind of goal.
This is peak human mind ability. A similar challenge in Italy is to memorize the entire Dante's divine comedy!
Agreed.
I know someone memorizing Dante's Inferno. Apparently it's going well so far.
There's a couple of great performances of Dante on CZcams that I've seen. It sounds amazing in Italian.
Hi Dr. Anthony,
I loved the video and the content you provide us about memory. I saw one of your books, or maybe itâs a course, titled How to Memorize the Terminology of Any Profession (I searched on Amazon but couldn't find it). I asked myself, is it possible to use only the mind palace for memory? Because most associations without a mind palace are in space but not in a specific place. Maybe we use active recall, like drawing cards, and still remember, right?
Thanks for your question.
There are tools used inside of Memory Palaces, so we donât normally use the technique on its own.
About the title you mentioned, itâs an exclusive bonus in the Magnetic Memory Method Masterclass. đ
@@AnthonyMetivierMMM Thanks Anthony. Now I'll go and do a picture walk with a drawing book arround the city to make new mind palaces and memorize it.
Power to you!
Once I realized that memory palaces are meant to be a trigger to remember what you already know, I stopped worrying about how vivid my mnemonic images were. I just trusted my brain to fill in any missing info instead of being skeptical.
This is a good space to be in. The elaboration tools are there when we need them, but truly Magnetic Images have been there all along and are merely set up like chess pieces in the Memory Palaces. They do their work very well when the right pieces are in place.
Greetings Dr. Anthony, youâve been putting across some great videos giving all of us new perspectives with every video. I wanted to enquire from you, Like the memory palace techniques which leverages on hooking pieces of information with spatial locations which one is conversant with, in a similar way will using famous paintings or pictures be equally good in which pieces of information are hooked with distinct objects inside the paintings? In my limited understanding as a memory enthusiast I feel both work on the same principle, and also thereâs no dirth of paintings available online with which one can familiarise themselves, instead of looking at the complex spatial pathways, which may seem overwhelming, that is to have a collection of several memory palaces. Looking forward to hear about your thoughts on this. Warm Regards.
Yes, you can definitely do these things.
The question to be asked is:
Do you want to use Memory Palaces or Memorized Palaces.
Any time you have to look something up to either learn or even familiarize yourself with it, you are out of the realm of using an actual Memory Palace. This is because Memory Palaces are just that: based on what you remember.
Memorized Palaces, on the hand, are quite different, add cognitive load (usually unnecessarily) and are not as immediately available for many of us.
Ultimately, each person has to experiment and decide for themselves how viable the approach is. I've done a lot of experiments and ultimately concluded that using Memory Palaces and not Memorized Palaces is the right approach for me.
Does this way of looking at things make sense and help you out?
Yes, thank you so much
I actually decided to take a day and mull over the point, as when I first read your comment, I was defensive, but giving it more thought I realised you're right that memorized palaces will just be another thing to remember instead of them being an aide to remember new things.
Memory palaces are the way to go.
Also doctor do you use the story/linking method within your memory palaces or do you just place abstract ideas in a form of objects in your different locis?
Ultimately, it's not about being right. Just helping people see and understand the fruits of experience and time lost on things that logically did not make much sense from the get-go.
But as I say: experimentation is key, and asking questions is a form of experimentation, so bravo for doing that.
To the story/linking method, this is another logical principle to consider, and it comes up in this week's premiere:
czcams.com/video/vb-a2-oCo74/video.html
The short answer is that the Memory Palace itself is a linking method, and you can indeed think of it as a story. It is always used linearly in time no matter what, which is why I made this video for everyone:

Hope this additional resources, both past and future, go beyond the call of duty for you. Talk soon!

How long would this take?
I wish I had this skill
Each person will be different, but there are tools that will make things faster.
@@AnthonyMetivierMMM my only problem is mnemonics. I find it quiet tough to create them
Why "create" them when the Magnetic Memory Method completely eliminates this step?
@@AnthonyMetivierMMM yes you are right!
They have to be colorful and zany and exaggerated. But how this means I don't have to create them?
Yes, in the beginning that is a great thing to do. Greater subtleties await if you get into the training.
To answer your question, what are some of the images you've created? It will be easier to get to the core issue you're facing if I know what you've been working with.
You know what they say about teaching someone to fish rather than fishing for them.
My preference is to go even further by helping those who really want to learn these techniques how to fish, farm, hunt and even pull inspiration directly from the sky.
I want to ask you, Doctor, I am a person who has no friends, although I am not shy, and I make some efforts to gain friends in a friendly way, and I do not really know whether the problem is with me or with the type of people I want to become friends with
Thanks for your post.
Please say more. Itâs difficult to converse based on so few details.
In the meantime, Aristotleâs chapter on friendship in The Nichomachean Ethics may be interesting and useful for you.
There's a book called "how to make friends and influence people" I know you didn't ask but thats a great book and could help you with your issues.

Awesome đ interview. Also; FYI millions have memorized the Holy Qurâan. The Quran is 77,797 words long in its original Classical Arabic. This is approximately 80% the length of the Christian New Testament. The Quran also contains 327,792 letters, which means there are roughly four letters per word.
đ
Even the Alexandrian manuscript did not get into the hands of Bible translators until 1628, after the King James Bible of 1611 had been published. So the foundation for a Bible far more accurate and understandable than the Authorized Version has been laid since 1611. Bit of history for you.
