Kodak Aerochrome - The Film That KILLED Thousands

  • Kodak actually developed a film stock along with the United States military. The military needed a color infrared film to help identify enemy combatants in WWII. Kodak was the leading film producer in the world and was happy to help. This collaboration with the military resulted in Kodak Aerochrome. Kodak Aerochrome is a color infrared film that was initially used by the military, but was eventually released to the public for use. In this video I aim to tell the story of Kodak Aerochrome, and show some examples of its uses in film photography.

    2:30 while it is true that clothes dont reflect IR as well, it was not used to detect humans but vehicles and entrenchments or other hiding and storage spaces that were covered with camo nets or dead vegetation

    Aerochrome was the second coolest thing Kodak did during WW2. The first? Purifying the uranium for the Manhattan Project. (I don't think they will bring either back).

    Hey there, fascinating video. The aerochrome scarcity issue is so bad that people and companies are putting massive effort into creating filters for full spectrum digital cameras to recreate the effect. I'm one of those people who've managed to make it, and it's under such difficulty, that no one's produced a perfect product yet, and likely never will.

    It is worth mentioning that alternatives using ordinary cameras are not capable of really using infrared light. The best way to get Aerochrome-like effects is by using a camera with its sensor filter pack removed, and using a filter called IR Chrome by Kolari. This portrays reflected infrared light as red or orange , and treats other colors as a normal camera would. It does not do the actually false visible-light colors that Aerochrome does, but I think this is an advantage.

  • @andyvan5692

    yes, lomo purple is a good substitute, albeit colour negative, C41 film; for more on this, see Jess Hobbs channel, where she compares this to metropolis as well, interesting quirk, that the Purple ONLY affects foliage (R\G) and NOT skin tone, and now you have explained why.

  • @maf421
    @maf421 Před rokem +4

    Remember, just because you use (rare, overpriced, overhyped, discontinued, wierd) film, doesn't make it art. Didn't you make a video like that just recently? HIE / Aerochrome was an expensive, wierd film when it was widely available, and we didn't all run out and shoot it. You did a good job presenting the past history of this BTW.
