  • Think you know all there is to know about film photography? Well think again - because today we are probing the the depths of Ansel Adam’s favorite pastime. Using my handy dandy iceberg chart, we start with relatively common photography facts and continue lower and lower until we wind up at some really weird stuff. From 35mm to ultra large format, from color negative film to a throttles, from Kodak to svema - we cover lots of ground. You might even pick up a few film photography tips along the way.

I've been shooting film since I was double digits years old, returning to the medium about ten years ago after I realized I could buy the kit I could never afford back in contemporary film days. I love that every single one of the CZcamsrs you reference is already on my subscription list. Matt, Jason, Japes, etc. I look forward to following your further adventures - you rock! Andy

Great video. You didn't mention Kodak HIE (black and white infrared film). Infrared photography is mostly digital now but this kodak film was really amazing. And lots of other manufacturers had one or two infrared films. And regarding Tech Pan, developed with their special developer, Tech Pan was an amazingly high detail film (without the radical contrast).

Maximillian (Analog Insights) from Germany - I believe from Berlin. Ari (Shoot on Film by Ari), from Finland. I'm 66 years old and not surprisingly, I grew up on film photography (that's all there was in the 1970's). I am so happy to see film photography becoming popular again with people in their 20's and 30's. You guys are definitely helping to keep film photography alive. I look forward to your future videos! I've been shooting film since my dad handed me the Argus he brought back from the war. Since then I've shot Minolta, Canon, Nikon . . and lots of others in between. In the 90;s someone bought me a very nice digital. I hung up the film stuff and started learning all the tricks in post. Over the next few years I slowly got bored with my craft. Thought I had outgrown it. Then one day, we laid my father-in law to rest. The family sat around in the backyard reminiscing and drinking a little too much wine. Someone ran inside and grabbed several boxes of my old prints.and we passed them around laughing and crying . .. and it dawned on me that no one was grabbing for their phones or the tablets - - they were passing prints around the table. I know - I know - you can print digital but what occurred to me in that moment was that my best work was in my rearview mirror. What dawned on me was that there is a difference in the process between digital and analog and that difference changes the result.
Digital is kinda like - BANG - BANG - BANG - BANG - - - scroll through what you got - - - keep the one you were luckiest on and toss the rest. Analog is thoughtful and pensive - - you get one or two chances. It's the difference between sitting a monkey in front of a typewriter who EVENTUALLY writes a novel after gazillions of random keystrokes . . . and someone COMPOSING a novel
It's the difference between making love and casual sex. In the end - perhaps the result if similar - but the satisfaction of the participants will be very different.
Look - digital has its place and one thing is for certain. Put a great digital camera in anyone's hands and they'll frequently capture some really great shots for you and the cost of that process will be a small fraction of the cost of an analog shot.
Put a film camera in someone's hands and they've got a lot to learn before they'll get anything they can consider great. Film isn't going to displace digital any more than love between people is going to trump casual sex. . . . . . all that said, I know what gives me the greatest satisfaction. Cheers!

I got myself a slide projector. Viewing slides the way they were meant to be viewed is a special thing. Yeah, I scan them so I can share them online, but projecting them trumps that.
I've not used Kodak Tech Pan, but one I've recently been playing with is Adox CMS 20 on 35mm. I'm amazed at how sharp it is and it may be my favorite looking B&W film. Even if its slow speed can be annoying at times. I don't know if Kodak Tech Pan needed a specific developer or not, but the Adox one needed their Adotech IV. Now I want to get some black and white paper and see how much detail I can pull out of it with an enlargement.
On a similar note, I want to get some positive print film, such as ORWO Wolfen PF2, and make black and white slides by taking photos of my other B&W negatives like one does with DSLR scanning. And I've also been entertaining the idea of making an old school slide presentation this way too.
And it may just be off topic for the video (or maybe even deeper) but I've also recently gotten into the rather expensive type of photography that involves taking photos 24 times a second onto long thin strips of film, usually 100ft long or longer. haha

I currently own (film) the Brownie, Nikons, Contax, Exackta, two Rollie’s, a Kroni Omega and a 4x5 Crown Graphic. and others I won’t part with them. A huge thing with me is sentimental but more so the actual process of shooting film. How many exposures? Do I have another roll? Everything counted. Now my digital camera can shoot a bazillion frames per second,. Where is the thought and skill with that?

If you’re really looking for Svema film, you can find some Russian film called TASMA, and it’s really cool. Most of the time it costs about 4-7 American dollars for their Type 42L black and white 400 ISO film, and it’s a great film for evening shoots and even commercial shootings. I personally use this thin film for evening and club shoots instead of a much more expensive HP5.
And about Zorki - there’s ONE camera where you can change your setting after and before advancing the lever, Zorki 6. It’s like a Leica M2.5, the most advanced M39/Leica screw mount rangefinder to find and the only one with both a lever instead of a screwing knob to advance the film AND a door-like back instead of fully disassembling lower part of other FED 1-3 and Zorki 1-5 cameras to put your film inside.

I respectfully disagree. Canon AE1 is NOT a camera worth of recommandation. It's on the end of its shelf life, too many of them are going bad, electronics inside simply gives up. That camera was wery popular few years back course it was produced in great noumbers what translates it was cheap. But today, with that overhyped prices, it's crazy to recommand it. If you really want to shoot Canon FD camera, than it would be wise to try Canon FTB out, a purley mechanical one, which will last far, far longer. Or the F1. Just saying...

    • @tobysummers471
      @tobysummers471 Před 5 měsíci +2

Agreed! I had an AE1 in good condition, cost me £50 with a 50 1.4 SSC lens. Really disappointing camera, electronics in them are unreliable. Lens was meh. They feel cheap compared to a Nikon or Olympus equivalent. It’s such a shame that people still recommend such a mediocre camera. The Olympus OM-1 or a Nikon/Nikkormat are better cheaper choices that have a more quality feel. The Nikkormat is a quality piece of engineering.

This is true, however the automatic modes are great for learning, I didn't start on an ae-1 but on an A1 a couple of years ago
It's what I would recommend, here it's cheaper than an F1, it has great automatic modes and features you can grow into. The lightmeter is also quite impressive... The fd mount is great when starting out. I like it a lot because with a m42 mount adapter you can buy cheap lenses to learn and figure out what kind of lenses you like
On the other end. My girlfriend got a Olympus om2-n Wich honestly is amazingly compact. It doesn't support m42 lenses. And only has aperture priority, but it's huge finder makes it easier to focus when learning and starting out. So that's another camera I'd recommend. Especially because it's so easy to use. The metering needle is very nice as well because it shows things in a schale that's easier to understand as a beginner than the A1

Can be more easily repaired and doesn't wear out often. I specifically avoided the RZ67 and own a RB67 because of that reason. Big and heavy that it is, I still take it to the field.
