  • Today I wanted to share what I have learned about using the top RV Fuel Savings programs and put them side by side which one has better prices and a better system. My advise is to find the one that fits for you to save a bit of money and the one that won't be difficult to use. Here are the links to the different programs.

We set up a separate checking account to tie to our Open Roads card. When we prep for a trip, we transfer funds from our main account into the “Open Roads” account. The savings are significant and being able to fuel at truck stops is a plus.

When I am on the road I try using Costco gas stations. By using their Visa Card I save 4% and they usually have good prices. I also use the Good Sam Club RV Plus Charge Card at Pilot and Flying J Travel Centers. When using them I save 7 cents per gallon and they bill my checking account once per month. Costco, Pilot and Flying J usually have pretty good prices.

Great video Jared. With fuel prices rising again this is a good topic to touch on. We have used the TSD (Open Roads) program for a few years now and have been very happy with the savings. Plus, with towing a 5th wheel it’s so much more convenient getting in and out of the trucker lanes. Keep the videos roll’in and safe travels.

Thanks for covering the topic. I especially liked the breakout by region you did. Lots of other content creators focus mainly on Open Roads. We only find that it saves us a bit about 10 percent of the time. It is not unusual to see one of the big open roads truck stops up to $0.95 higher than the gas buddy station across the interstate. But we did notice savings that make it the best is regional. Our main strategy is to use Gas Buddy and compare to Open Roads prices. 9 out of 10 times gas buddy is cheaper. Then, we use our Costco Visa card and get 4% cash back or a master card which gives us 3% back. QT, when available, is hands down our favorite place to stop for price, ease of access and their tea.

We're fortunate to have Maverik stations out west, and here's a great example: Over Memorial Day weekend, I used Open Roads to fuel at a TA truck stop on I-80 just west of Winnemucca, NV. The net price was $3.84/gallon (saved $5.58 per the app). I topped off at a Maverik station in Winnemucca before heading home: $3.53/gallon (including the $0.02/gallon discount). Many Maverik stations have dedicated truck/RV fuel lanes with high-flow pumps and DEF, and some even have dump stations. Great video, Jared... thank you, sir!

With Mudflap, i fuel then go inside and pay, no issues. Also use upside depending on savings or station availability. Personally use Upside for gas AND diesel. Another great video sir.

We’ve been really happy with Open Roads. In Oregon you do have to go in and can’t use the card at the pump. A little less convenient but we really like the savings. We set up a separate checking account specifically for this card as we didn’t want it attached to our regular account. I hesitated to with the information they needed but it’s all been good and no problems.

I've been using Gas Buddy for a few years now. It has saved me as much as $1 gal when traveling thru CA. The gas station closest to our campground was a $1 more per gal than one about 20 miles down the road. Usually after we set up camp that night I'll get on the app and look for stations within 25 miles or so. Most of the time I'll save a minimum of 10 cents and usually 20-30 cents a gal. There was one other way to save on fuel that someone in our campground used. Sometime late at night or very early in the morning he went around with his 5 gal can & a hose. Got us for 5 gal & our neighbors as well.

Good coverage of topic Jared. Class A DP here, so savings add up at 70-100 gallons a fueling. We use Open Roads in rotation with best price after CC cash back savings. We mostly use Sam's Club CC as the cash back is 5% and almost immediate. It is available in Sam's Club purchases the next billing cycle and we are always at Sam's. I will assess local diesel prices in Gas Buddy to compare to Open Road listing and if the local market price after CC cash back is lower than Open Roads (and if it is comparably convenient) that is our choice. Often, I don't even have to reference Gas Buddy because there are QTs and Buc-ee's on the route, and their price with the CC cash back will beat the Open Roads options.

I have both Mudflap and TSD. One nice part about Mudflap is you can link it to a card that gives a nice cash back on fuel purchases. We usually compare TSD and Mudflap to figure which is the best savings. Love both programs though.

The Good Sam fuel discount is only on specific stations, not all Flying Js so we've rarely used that. I have both Mudflap and Open Roads for diesel and its been about 50-50 on who's cheaper. Open Roads has more locations (out west anyway) so I've used that more but Gas buddy is great for when you're disconnected and can find those cheaper, tighter fit places.

We save fuel by using mainly GasBuddy. Without the trailer, we find it easier to get into the small stations for a better deal. Also, if you simply SLOW DOWN, the fuel burn is much less. (And as an added benefit, the safety margin is higher and easier on your equipment). I also use the surface wind forecasts for in route cities to determine the best time and route to save fuel. Nothing like a tail wind to save an extra $40-$50 bucks on an all day trip!!

We signed up for a BP card and activated it just prior to our summer of RVing. We will save 50 cents a gallon for the first 60 days using the card and 15 cents a gallon after the promotional period is over. The 60 days at 50 cents off will cover our entire trip and save us a significant amount of money.

Where are fuel prices increasing? Here in North TX regular is as low as 2.89/g and diesel as low as 2.93/g as of today. This is down 25-40c from last week when gas stations increased prices in reaction to what is happening in Ukraine. Except for periodic fluctuations, fuel prices have stabilized around 2.80-3.00/g at the discount stations and somewhat higher at your traditionally more expensive options here in North Texas.

One savings a lot of folks don't know about is with T-Mobile. They have what they call "T-Mobile Tuesday". Every Tuesday they have discounts for select restaurants, movies, etc, but they also have a gas discount. It is with Shell's Fuel Rewards and is 10 cents per gallon (gas and diesel). Limit has been 35 gallons and good from Tuesday thru Friday. You can use any CC and take the points they give you for fuel purchases. You do have to be a T-Mobile client and you do have to load the app.
Last week, as an example, I filled my F-250 diesel (24 gallons). T-Mobile/Fuel Rewards discount was $2.40 and I earned back 5% on my Sam's Club CC. Total savings with the CC was $3.67 on $3.059 + 2.40 from FR for a total of $6.07.
Also, Sam's Club CC now makes your monthly savings available every month for in warehouse purchases. So all savings from all CC purchases are available with each statement.
We also use Open Roads when traveling. We take advantage of Fuel Rewards and T-Mobile, plus gas buddy at home since there are no Open Roads participants within 50 miles.
Keep all the options open and save. One other suggestion is to bank the savings (if you can). We save $100s every year in a Roth IRA to use in the future when we hit the road full time.

The best price isn't always the best fuel quality or the best access. I'll give up $.05/gal to use the truck lanes rather than have to fight for a lane with all the cars. A truck stop should have faster turnover of their fuel in the tanks which means you're less likely to get poor fuel.
When using the big rig lanes, every RV'er should be sensitive to how long they take to fuel up. Get in and get out as fast as you can. You may be on vacation but the drivers of those big rigs aren't. I don't even wash my windows while I'm at the island. I'll pull forward and then wash my windows.
I used to use the Good Sam discount at Flying J, but it's such a paltry discount that any other discount program at nearby truck stops beats the Good Sam discount.
The other discount program that I use is Sinclair. $.10/gallon for gas or diesel. However, most Sinclair stations with big rig lanes do not recognize the discount at the big rig lanes. When you tell the app which pump you're at, it can't make the transaction because it doesn't see that as a valid pump. According to Sinclair tech support, this limitation is imposed by each location, not by Sinclair corporate.
I use Google Maps Street View to determine if I can easily get into and out of an off-highway fuel station. As Jared said, most Maverick stations are big enough that they're easy to get into and out of.

I disagree about Buc ees. I tried them once Tennessee or North Carolina. Packed with cars and zero RV parking. I pulled in and it was so crowded my RV tied up traffic. Then i parked at the extreme end of Buc Es and went in store. A car and a Cadillac SUV pulled right infront of my truck. I was parked across the lines. They were parked in the lines perpendicular to me. I had to wait an hour for them to come out, so i could move. I will never go to a Buc Es again. They had so many choices, it was as if they did it on purpose. I still pissed about it.

I use Upside, and to be honest, the cashback is not worth it. It seems the cashback is reserved for all the gas stations that are selling completely overpriced gas. If the price at Walmart or Costco is $3.00 per Gal, Upside stations with Cash back will charge $3.50 typically with $0.20 cash back (as example).

I've been using GasBuddy with the free card for several years now. In my experience you generally don't save enough to justify the paid cards unless you want the other benefits that come with them. I have noticed annoyingly that sometimes the discount GasBuddy shows now includes the discount at a station would give you for having points in their loyalty program or sometimes just plain isn't correct. The past several months I've noticed that sometimes it will show one price but then when you click the station to actually activate the discount it shows another price that's a few cents higher per gallon. They also the minimum savings per gallon to $0.03 but it's a pretty easy program to use. Once you're signed up all you do is activate the deal in the app when you're pulling in at the station and then swipe the card just like it was a regular credit or debit card and enter your Pin.
