- Four's Wild was on an absolute roll at the Hail Mary Derby resetting the single overhead cam 2.3L Ford record over and over. Who would have ever thought this motor would be on the brink of a 6sec run?

I see that huge turbo has a 2.3 installed on it!
this is just absolutely mind-blowing that this car is consistently in the low 7s. I knew those engines were good but holy hell this just blows my mind.
" OHIO George Montgomery " was the first guy to really lean on these engines with a turbo back in the 70's . The one thing that really shocked me was what he said about the strength of the short block in stock trim . He said you could run the stock bottom end with 20 lbs. of boost and never hurt these things !!!!!! That statement about these engines says it all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not only is this a 4 cyl. It's a stick too
It’s a clutchless transmission same style as the pro stock cars . All of the import cars run it but they not getting the praise for it .
...its always them damn Fords setting and breaking records!! 😀😀
Omg that’s only got a 2.3 liter motor 😮 and it’s haaaaulin ass hooooly !!!! Tuned up right good wow !
It almost broke into the 6 second barrier on the last run 💥
I had a Merkur back in the day with a thunderbird ecu /svo maf/Isuzu npr Intercooler running 19psi. It ran low 8sec in the 1/8. Never would of thought somebody would run 7s in the 1/4 with that motor. Impressive!
They have a Esslinger 2.3l probably capable of running in the 6's with the right trans and gear ratio
My dad had an XR4TI also. Fun little car. I just remember hearing the turbo and barely seeing over the dash.
@@nickboucher7339 same here, grew up with with an XR4TI
One bad ass single 2.3l man
raced these motors on dirt awesome engines
My dad had a a thunder bird exactly like that so it makes me happy when I see one
Great runs..straight as an arrow...👍💪💪
Remember kids, this is a freaking 4 BANGER! What the actual fuck man they knocked this build out of the park! My late grandma had one of these when I was growing up. Now I am 38 and wanting to try and find one of my own. Such underrated cars, plus hands down the best looking of the aero T-Birds! They really had a great platform with the Fox body cars. They were already super advanced for their time, really getting amazing performance and fuel economy for the time.
people forget this 2.3l won so many autocrosses in europe as well. Badass pinto engine
OK POPS
obviously Ford engineers had no idea this engine would become just what it has in this day !!!!! What an incredible effort from these folks !!! Sure never saw this coming when I was driving my girlfriend's pinto in 1975 !!!
Badass t bird Ford power forever baby
I love turbo coupe Thunderbird s. I have had a few what a fun car
Congrats to that team! That is haulin'!
Whats crazy is that body is design to go over 200 mph in a wind tunnel on the oval track FORD POWA
Yeah that is why with the combination of the mechanical components and that design it is very efficient for what it is. Cuts through the wind like hot knife through butter.
Reminds me of the old Bob Glidden tbird in the 80s......
That BIRD is flying!
Probably about 10 people died watching this because they where brain washed to believe a SOHC engine can NEVER go that fast.
😂😂😂😂😂😂🤙🤙
Who can I talk to about working on my transit connect motor 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙌🏾 I want to get more power out of it
@@chrisacrylics_ Your banker!!
As a Merkur driver, I love seeing this thing rip! As a rotard though, that blue Mazda sounded so good.
Hondas are coming close. If this car has a power glide that would be cool.
Crazy thing in stock form it is just slightly slower.
Saw this bad boy run at Bristol Tn.
That setup.....she just strolls off the line
I’ve been racing 2.5mod hydroplanes, well all classes of them my entire life besides the GP and unlimiteds. But the 2.5mod is my fav class. The boat got a new crate engine recently and I put the old one after a refresh in my 78 mustang 2…
A beautiful sounding 275 NA HP. Can run against the coyote mustangs with ease and beat them on the streets. From a stop anyway. Roll racing/top end is different.
Wow!!! This is really amazing
Strong love those 2.3 been using them for years!
I had a Merkur in highschool. At Carlisle PA, I dynoed at 242hp and 278ftlbs.
Then I upgraded to a cos worth intercooler and an esslinger head.
Man did it change!!
I intend to build a Merkur now but can’t seem to find the “perfect” build. So for starters, I need a list of everything you have on your mustang kind sir. I won’t be competing against you so feel free to tell me it’s inner most secrets lol
I wonder what it picked up with those mods
We know this guy he’s a very good dude
Dude is launching like a fucking boss!
Amazing. Thank you
That’s that stuff dreams are made of
I'd love to see this thing IRL. That's totally badass!
Thundercats HOOOO
@@xmo552 ayyyy! my guy
Impressive
Bought an 86 and 88 brand new. loved them
Dam how much power is that Lima 2.3 pushing ? That’s very impressive… I miss my 2.3 now
i had an 88 XR4Ti, miss that car..
This car probably weighs 1800lbs so it's probably at about 900-1000hp. That 5 speed makes a big difference as well.
Insane, awesome 👌
Miss my 88, that 2.3 would take all the boost from the ihi turbo just backing off the timing a little, I put a stupid gap on a wrx sti🤣, but always had an issue with something, first gen hydro boost brakes, hydraulic clutch slave and master issues, and many other luxury car first time amenities that failed. Ended up selling it and wish I would've made the time for it. Pulled like crazy.
Aweome. Oh yes it's time to dial these in and the tinkering with timing and boost and get all kinks out. My 2.3 did low 10s all day with no head work so once we rebuild it we will be in the low 9 it takes fine tuning and.lot of time really
@@eddiespagetti8395 that's awesome, I'd like to see a t coupe in the 9's! That'd make an awesome CZcams video for sure...
@@Sneakdisscommentbelow oh it isn't tbird it's Fairmont yes once it's stared I g
Want vids of this. It's my semi retirement hobby so I will have plenty time to play around . These 2.3 are amazing really
@@eddiespagetti8395 yes for sure. I had mine for about 6 months and went threw 3 turbos running them wastegate to direct vacuum also. If felt like every rod was about to leave thee block 😂. I also had a built 5.0 a 98 sho, and a Tahoe with lambo doors and 26's. I had to many toys to maintain and was building a car for my brother and had to make a hard decision on which one to cut loose, Can't have it all no matter hour many hours a day you put in sometimes...
That's awesome! Had an 84 SVO back in the day.. Rapido-Powah.
How bad do you want it back?
In the 80's, there was a pro stock guy, buddy ingersol that cleaned up because they let him run his buick twin turbo six.
Gawd dang!
Crazy!
My stock Capri turbo rs has got this thing hanging all daylong 😁😁😳😳😳👍
Unreal!
Fantastic to see a sohc 4 FORD running those unreal numbers !!
So nice
Wow. I sold those new!
Bad to the bone Thunderbird !!!!!!!!!
God damn i love me a lima
Wow
Anyone know how much pressure that monster turbo was running ?
Getting close to the 6s
Listen. I just got a mustang from the grandfather. That’s fucking nuts. Who would’ve ever thunk. 🤦♂️ I never knew mustangs ever had this turd motor. It’s starting to grow on me. This is the difference I like. I think this might be the coolest car I have ever owned
Is this a stock block or billet block or what?
Kataaaapuuult :O !!!
that's so fucking wild from a Lima motor.
Did they bypass the head gasket and just weld the head on?
Dialed in af! Wow
Wow. That's unbelievable with a 2.3. how big are the turbo's on that thing?
Would u be willing to put it back into a ranger for some fun
Holy $#it man.... That Lima is putting in some work...
I'm guessing it's an FMS or Esslinger block and 3L or so?
Yeah definitely can't do that with a stock cast iron block
I'm sure you're right, but still lol.
2.3 l stock block
tall deck
Sheeeeeeeeeeeesh
Damn
weeeeeeeeee!😁
Congrats! Wow, insane to think the little 2.3L that's in my 97' Mazda B2300 pick up obviously with a lot of modification could potentially run 7 second quarter miles. Is there a future 6 second time slip coming for that T-Bird?
haha yeah. nothing on that engine is stock. not even the block.
@@cyclone4311 but the stock block is good to run low 8s. Seen it in a full weight street mustang
I need some one to tell me the power difference from 1st slip to that 190 pass???
Better 60Ft, dialing in the tune, etc.
@@talontsi97videos
I'm just trying my 86 SVO up and running again 😔
Dam i want to know the build on this
Darn my 2.3L Lima I4 turbo engine goes from 0-60 in about 6 minutes, 1/4 mile time is around 2 minutes. I also lost a drag race to a guy on a bicycle.
My 2.3 lima na ranger gets up decently for 112 horsepower.
SIck runs
Who’s the owner of that car?
Is it really a 2.3 or is it a stroker? Cuz I know a few companies are producing 3L out of them now...
I think its a 179 ci
Whom?
@@expels Race Engineering is one, but there are others.
What’s the song being played?
its from the youtube library for creators
Cheel | Kurt is the song.
Didn't know this motor had that kind of aftermarket?
Racer Walsh had a car that gave the big boys a run for their money all day long in the 90's I've seen them put down 525hp to the rear wheels naturally aspirated in circle track cars and turn 10,000 rpm all night long with quad valve Volvo heads on them
Oh yes. There are always stories around when people start the "those things are junk" rhetoric and people fall into it while knowing nothing about them. They are a damn good motor and design. My bro had the SS/ES record for years with his pinto and later escort with a 2.3L and nhra kept running the minimum down with his and others success in that class.
A bucket of parts sets another record.
Mustang owner be like your engine is a 6.0L so is bigger than my 5.0...your 4 cylinder is a ricer tin can that needs a turbo to win....this 4 cylinder shows up and beat a mustang, but it's Ford powa! SMDH! Fanboys LOL
Huh?
I got a stock 88 when i was 17 (97), and of course did basic mods (stock 190 hp + a few more pounds of boost, airflow + exhaust mods). While i couldn't beat the fast V8 cars of THAT era (LS1, LT1), it could hang with similar period V8s with a 'normal' power/weight ratio. Stock times for the 3600lb four cylinder went from 16's into the14's. I got to revel in the "BS that's a 2.3, show me the motor" and similar disbelief. It was delicious. I was accepted in the ricer crowd for it being a 'quick' 4cyl (and their boost question guru) and the other crowds since it was domestic.
This bird would make my 2004 CBR1000RR look slow!!!
Stock bottom end and stock turbo? 😂
What kind of car is that
Ford Thunderbird
I got 2.3 with 8 plugs
you can easy make over 600 hp with the 2.3
Example of built over bought
Of course he built it - there's no market for those motors.
@@TS34675 you may wanna research that.
I'd like to state THIS IS NOT A FORD it is a Esslinger 2.3l They build a beefy version of the 2.3l that can hold around 1000HP while the ford engine Blows up at 450HP+ and a esslinger engine alone will cost you 10,000$
stock block 2.3 sohc turbo is good to 800...crankshaft about 700hp if I remember correctly,, rods and pistons 420-450 depending on how good your tuner is, anything above 450 really on stock pistons and rods assuming this is the turbo engine we are talking about is on borrowed time...also doesnt help that the head even when fully ported flow like 235 cfm...still a big bottleneck and a recipe for headgasket issues without head studs and even then it still needs 20+psi to make good numbers plus race gas or watermeth injection. duratec engine is a much better option with upgraded internals because of the flow capability of the head when ported is like 280-320ish cfm, requires less boost to make power because of the superior head on the duratec...add in race gas or watermeth with 91 or 93 octane and you`ll make power on less boost with the duratec.....with all that being said my 88 turbocoupe is a beast...stock turbo turned up to 18 psi with advanced timing...i rip this thing every day to redline and it never misses a beat and still gives me 27 mpg combined driving mostly highway..plus it handles like a 1994 mustang gt which is basically a go cart which is pretty damn good once you get atleast 235 wide tires all around to kill the understeer
The Esslinger stuff is for roundy-round cars. They've stopped making parts for LIMA turbo engines and no longer even produce the D-port cylinder head.
Ecoboost ?
Probably the turbo 2.3 that originally came in it reconfigured.
Nope old school LIMA engine
EcoBoost are a relatively "modern" series of engines, SOHC is old school tech...
That's the stock 2.3 or something thunderbird engine i had a 3/4 chassis Toyota starlet with a stock 2.3 engine ran 9.0 all day they just hard to find parts back in the day
@@talontsi97videos what's the lima engine?

@@fastford727 the 2.3 liter b230f is not made by Ford I don't know where you get this info from😂😂😂😂😂
The b230 it is a continuation of Volvo's B series that they have been producing since the 1950s
