- Between Dolby Cinemas, IMAX, RealD 3D, and Regal RPX there are a lot of ways to watch a movie. And some movies like The Lion King are released in all of them. But which of these premium formats is better? Well, it depends on you and on the movie. If you want the biggest screen size you can get, you want IMAX. But if you're an audiophile you'll love Dolby Atmos. And different genres lend themselves to different formats. A comedy is probably fine in standard/digital. But if you're seeing a big blockbuster you might want a format like IMAX or Dolby Cinema.

Watch with Dolby on
I saw Endgame in Dolby and that was my first time seeing a movie in the new Dolby theater. It was the most immersive, epic movie experience I've ever had and now I only see movies with Dolby. However some movies can be a bit too loud that it's almost unbearable. That was the case with the newest Godzilla movie but I have a feeling that that was more the movie than the theater's fault.
Movie theaters set the speakers to a calibrated level. The movie makers decide the loudness when making the movie. Monster movies are supposed to feel big and loud.
Dune was like this. Saw it in an Atmos theatre. Absolutely incredible sound design but massively loud. The film lost sound twice and blew a speaker from the sound system being over stressed. Dune pushed state of the audio to its limits and it was awesome.
Christopher Nolan movies are pretty awesome in Dolby too
@@jasperlilienfeld505 I also felt that the loudness of Dune was unbearable.
yep, the loudest one is the jet
I watched Interstellar in analogue IMAX. I have never seen anything as incredible. 5 mins before the end of the movie the film reel broke, the projection stopped and they switched to IMAX digital after a brief wait. I was lucky to be able to compare Digital vs Analogue IMAX and the difference in quality between the two fornats was insane.
When you say in analogue, you mean with 15/70mm projection?
@@fp30e yes
Is there a difference? My theater only has digital imax
@@kovyvuri Big difference. Oppenheimer from the same director as Interstellar is also being shown in 1570 IMAX.
I work in a movie theater. What really interesting is, the movie file itself for IMAX is often a lot smaller than even a standard 2k format. They seem to have better compression than any other format.
so in your opinion, which format is the best visually?
@@Theoryofcatsndogs IMAX is just too good

@@Dma118 Not at all.
I would say imax because I took my friend to a DOLBY CINEMA and said he wouldn’t have known a difference if they hadn’t shown a comparison before the movie started

The question is, why so many remakes
Money
They need to remake movies every couple of years for licensing contracts.
*money money money*
Well, money makes the world go around, the world go around, the world go around!
Pixar makes movies to add contributions to the cinematic world. Toy Story 3 was supposed to be the final film of the franchise in 2010, until 4 years later John Lasseter had a crazy "what if?" situation with the Toy Story world. He couldn't stop thinking about it and he eventually had to make a secretive screenplay treatment with the other writers. Pixar is extremely strict with sequels because they feel as though creating them totally ruins the magic of the initial film (which is why Ratatwoille or Wall-E 2 won't ever exist) . They only create movies unless there is heart behind them. If anything, Pixar wants to make you cry and witness something heartwarming more than they want your money.
I usually pick Dolby. If the movie I want to watch doesn’t have a choice of Dolby, I just go with standard.
The theater I go to most of the time only has one option (unless they are showing it in 3D which I can't see due to vision problems). All 5 theaters in the cinema use "Barco laser projection" so the only difference is between the one with the massive screen or the 4 with the smaller screens. They dont have any of the Dolby stuff unfortunately (which is a pitty since Dolby Atmos in a properly set up theater is way better than regular surround sound audio)
And Dolby usually is a better choice than IMAX. Better sound and visuals. IMAX is usually LieMAX where it’s a smaller than the full IMAX screen and the sound is just turned up to 11. Dolby is clean audio.
Same
@@namgyallharipa8206 If you go with AMC A list. 20 bucks a month for 3 movies a week. One dolby ticket basically covers the cost. Its called being smart with money ;).

The big problem is when theaters take existing regular auditoriums and "upgrade" them to Dolby or IMAX. The improved picture and sound really don't make that big of a difference when you're watching it on a tiny screen. A true IMAX screen is 100 feet wide, but there are theaters passing off 50 foot wide screens as IMAX. Also, I've found Dolby's bass below the seat to be incredibly annoying and distracting.
Can you adjust the bass under your butt?

Ismail Abdul Latif yes but I can’t stand those annoying glasses!
I feel like Dolby is better than IMAX and looks better. The seats are a plus too
My city use to have Real IMAX til the company decided to get a downgraded Imax projector and a slightly smaller screen . I noticed it when i saw Far from Home
Or a RPX which is better picture and sound than IMAX
You should talk about 4DX and IMAX SAPHIRE which are offered by VOX cinemas in Dubai. They are the absolute cinema experience. As a matter of fact VOX cinemas are the best. Especially IMAX SAPHIRE
Malak Potter well my friend VOX cinemas is also in Saudi Arabia or at least jeddah I haven’t been in the cinema but I heard it was a fantastic experience

I learned so much more than I was expecting to with this video. EXCELLENT work, INSIDER. Thank you for this. I thought people were going to theaters less and less. I'm learning that the theater industry is still very much alive and stronger than ever. I haven't been to a theater in over a decade (when I was 20 or so)!
If Dolby just changed their projevtion to have taller footage like iMax then they'd win hands down.
I was in a dolby atmos cinema, I was amazed the sounds were legit in my head so crazy realistic from what i remmeber.
Dolby Cinema all day, except if the movie was filmed in IMAX and projected on a real IMAX movie screen.
Our local amc barely has any showings for the new releases in the “standard” format, essentially forcing you to pay more per ticket. I don’t mind if it’s Dolby, but the 3d I mind since I don’t want to watch it in that format, and most others don’t either.
Nice
If you watch Dunkirk closely the black bars will appear and disappear in the middle , thats where they changed the way they shot the film, imax and standard

I allllways pick Dolby whenever the option is available at AMC! I just love how grand the sounds and I think the visuals are very vibrant and just pulls me in! And the beginning Dolby intro at the start before the movie is always fun for me too! It's a treat every time I see a movie ^^
I just watched Across the Spider-Verse in Dolby - my first time in a Dolby theater. It's a game-changer. Not only was the sound phenomenal but the picture was indeed super crisp. Definitely a greater and more complete experience than IMAX.
Thanks. Very informative and simple explanation. While not too in depth but enough for average people to understand
so everything with "i" at the beginning of a word is expensive
Internet
very well explained, now this is quality info unlike other vids that sound like rubbish when explaining things.
I think 3_D isnt as popular because people prefer the in ur face pop up effects that would pop out of the screen rather than just in depth look. I think having both in depth and pop out effects without the screen looking dim when wearing the glasses would be nice. I do like wearing glasses and nothing wrong with the look and feel of the plastic glasses, its just sucks it dims the screen.
James Cameron is working on a theater system for glassesless 3D.
And like a lot of things that also depends on the filmmaker. If you get a director that doesn't really care much for the 3D then it's going to suck. It could also depend on the theater you have. A lot of theaters only have their bulbs at 50% to save on lifespan. If the theaters do things correctly and you won't really notice much of a difference in the image brightness.
Anum B I remember 3d movies used to be awesome a few years ago to me but then I realized I sent posting too much and I stopped watching in 3d
I wish I went to watch Interstellar in IMAX when it was out, but I discovered my most favorite movie of all time couple of years after it came out.
same bro....
I also wish if I can watch Interstellar in theatre. I have already watched it more than 10 times.
THIS... the fact that I will never see this in IMAX again baffles me... everytime I purchase a new cutting edge tv, the first thing I watch is this movie.
Interstellar sometimes has screenings in the cinesphere theater in Canada, which is the first IMAX theater.
And here I am, with my headphones and Netflix.
Thank you.
Very informative because if I do treat friends and myself to a movie, I try for the best but can’t afford the real IMAX theatre.
Great content.

Philippecr Coz every movie is not shot in IMAX.
ATMOS is just the Audio
Because the postproduction of a blockbuster film is very expensive considering IMAX.
@@lambo-ca why not just add atmos at imax theater and leave the atmos to just atmos
Finally I understood several things about all these formats ... thanks
Im just here trying to figure out which format i should see AVATAR: The way of water in. The descriptions online dont do a good job of telling you exactly what youre in for and i was wondering why one show of the film was in 3D priced at like 13.99 and another showing at the same time also in 3D comes out at 15.99 theyre both literally the same 3D format from the looks of it. Imax has 2 different 3D listings as well.
Can anyone explain why theres 2 prices for the same times for the same format?
*Laughs in New York at $26 a ticket* but seriously if you love movies check out the AMC A List membership! You get Dolby, IMAX, & 3D all included 🙌🏽

The movie times and theaters your showing are where I watch movies in Knoxville,TN. Which is where Regal cinemas started and is headquartered.
I used to work at a theater and ours had a real 6 story IMAX screen but other theaters even in the same company did not. Their IMAX screens were half the size, make sure to check if you can cause either way its $20.

Dolby Atmos isn't just more speakers for more accurate sound location. It's using all the speakers in tandem to simulate a soundsource in 3d space.
Previously, multiple channel speaker setups either have the Left/right/back/back left/ back right/ Top right/ etc. either ALL ON or ALL OFF, meaning that if the theatre had 8 Left channel speakers and the sound was going front to back on the left side, the speakers would be ALL ON, while with Atmos the left channel speakers would be producing sound one at a time, maybe two, maybe three, depending on where the sound is, its size, and its volume. That's why they often demo a fly buzzing around before the movie starts.
This makes it really scalable. It works whether you have a 5.1 sound system at home or up to 128 speakers in a theatre.
This was very well done.. Thanks!
I like how this guy sounds like he's doing ASMR
$18 for one ticket imma see it in format "torrent" they keep playin
Everything still looks crap since I’m watching this on my 4 year old phone
I watched the Interstellar in IMAX at the opening day. It was totally worth it!
I like Dolby theatre but theyr're all rip off. That's why you pay their $20/month A-List. IMAX sucks. Most of theatre in Vegas has LieMax.
I disagree that imax sucks
Dolby Atmosphere is worth the $20 ticket. I live in Vegas.
I really hope AMC never gets rid of A-List
IMAX is always worth it when it is a Nolan picture.
Stop using words like LieMAX. IMAX doesn't just mean 70mm. It can also mean projection and sound by IMAX themselves, Having said that, you are more likely to have a better viewing experience than a standard screen because of the IMAX quality control.
At my local cinema there's a room called the "Imax atmos 3d dolby seround room" and it costs the same as the standard one but it's clearly an imax screen with dolby seround (its huge)
WOW
Can you invite me ? :3
So great! I have what I need! Thank you!
I actually thought he was saying Dobby instead of dobley 😂🤦🏻♀️😂
POTTERHEAD!!
It's...Dolby...
In the future there will be 360° projectors with 360° speakers
Like Kanye’s cruel summer movie just without the 360 projection..
That's actually kind of an old technology called circle vision. It was made by Disney and was mostly just used for theme parks
It would suck tbh. "HEY LOOK RIGHT THERE'S A FIGHT"
"Where?!"
"Nvm u missed it"
My theater doesn’t have Dolby but IMAX is a great improvement from standard
I remember watching a movie on 34th street at AMC at Dolby the seat moved with the sound it was amazing.
The latest I've discovered is ScreenX where you have something like 240 degrees of screen, it goes on 3 walls instead of 1. I'm yet to try it, I'm guessing it'll be cool once or twice like most things but I'm intrigued.
I love Dolby, but the sound system messes with my body for the first 5 minutes until I get used to it. It is intense.
I’ve been to a theater with Dolby Atmos and I swear it’s so loud. At the same theater it’s a Giant Screen that’s the full huge wall without black bars. I wanted Far From Home with it and it was so cool!
Edit: At that same theater, it was reclining seats, reserved seats and it has a food tray. Between each row is a half wall, so you can put you feet up without hitting someone if you have long legs. Of put the seats back without worrying about it hitting someone.
I put tissue in my ears to compensate.
Ahh good ol' days when we used to visit these structures, they were a thing of beauty!!!
In the UK VUE cinemas are rolling out their once ‘premium’ seats as standard. I think that’s what will convince the general public to come to them instead of new sound and protection systems. It’s more tangible
There’s not a single Dolby theater around me so I don’t know what it’s like. However I have gone to an IMAX showing twice. Once for Infinity War and once for Endgame. Good lord booking the tickets on Fandango was $20 a person! I’m only willing to spill that kinda money for something as big as an Avengers film. Otherwise, it’s digital for me fam. Matinee price. That being said I did notice the screen being taller and the image being slightly crisper in IMAX. Never seen a movie in 3D, although I need to try it sometime. RPX sounds appealing, like it’s halfway to IMAX.
Dolby sound is also nice
This is one of the most informative CZcams videos I've ever seen. Thank you! Also there's another option called "Screen X".
Anyway, I just booked an IMAX ticket for The Flash which I'll watch this Friday!
Thanks for great detail video about audio and video specs. From my point of view Imax with DTS X pro may be better then dobly i guess only becuase dts audio is uncompressed one right so we can feel more real experience. Plz correct it if I'm thinking wrong on this... Thanks 😊
*Movie Tip:* Want to see Dolby or IMAX but don't want to spend the $20 on a singular ticket, go during matinee hours and it drops from $20 to $14 which is the price of standard tickets not during matinee times
Or get an AMC A-List subscription whose monthly was actually cheaper than a single standard IMAX movie ticket when I signed up last year.
You can see any movie with that three times a week including and it covers screenings that retail for more than the monthly subscription.
Or get amc alist
Tuesdays also.
In my country there’s only 2D (standard) 3D, 4D and IMAX, i think the Dolby depends on the cinema you go and the movie you are watching you can’t choose that
Same
Crazy how I didnt know I needed this
I've never actually gone to a movie theater before so this is a lot to take in
3:50 As far as I am concerned, any digital IMAX projection is LieMax. If I can’t get a seat behind the front half of the theater seats (which are hundreds of seats) then I can count all the pixels even on an 8K projection. And digital features are rarely shot and mastered on 8K, usually just 4K, 6K, 2K, and sometimes even 1080p that’s then cropped through the film editing process. So a lot of the time we are just watching an upscaled movie, stretched wider than normal. On a home HDTV that’s fine, but on a giant screen sitting close up I sometimes experience a screendoor effect. So it’s often better to see it on standard. On film, that’s a different story, then I’ll feel like I can see every pore on a face and every grain of sand and that’s it’s higher res than reality. 70mm film or bust!
100%
Watched Lion King in IMAX 3D and not disappointed lol
The imax in philly is the best one imo, it’s in the franklin institute and showed movies and exhibits before imax was popular. It’s shaped like a globe and it feels like you’re moving
My local amc in rockaway has 4k digital reald 3d Dolby and imax and imax 3d. When it opened years ago it had 35mm and Dolby digital ex not to mention 2k projectors for alternative content like pre show and concerts.
This guy whispering makes me feel like at any moment he's going to tell me the secret formula
I enjoy both IMAX and Dolby but for me personally, I prefer Dolby. The sound is just so perfect and the images are much better that I take Dolby as an ride at an theme park. It’s that awesome.
I recently saw Oppenheimer at the Dallas IMAX. Let me tell you, it was the soundtrack coming through their speakers that made it a whole new film, from when I had seen it a few weeks earlier in standard digital!!!!
Very good explanation. Watching this video coincidentally after booking a $19 ticket for Jumanji 2 in Amc Prime 3D with Dolby Atmos.
Saw far from home in real imax, a first for me. And wow it was an experience, gigantic screen, crisp and so loud lol
Fun fact. Yes Dolby projectors are 4K capable but most content is only 2K and dual projectors does not mean twice the resolution. It’s used for contrast and light.
We have 4d. Its just like those rides however a movie long.
Get with the times people
@DINEI NUNES
I'd say it's more dumb than 3d
It’s not
Go to a movie in 4d they reply back to me.
4d is good for movies like Jurassic world etc
But for action movies, which are more frequent 4d doesn't worth for the pay
Also 3d ,these days is reducing the contrast or brightness of the movie
I may have gone into some shit theatre but I say end game and captain Marvel without 3d glasses cause it's all dark
Also the real 3d scenes ( like things right into our face etc )are very few and sometimes none
So now it won't matter if it's 3d

Ive been in the imax theater 3 times and it was the worlds largest 1 at the time before it was knocked down, it was the one at sydney.
Omnimax is the best though. The screen is a giant dome surrounding you and the speakers are in the wall and they are amazing. By far the best film experience

A solid presentation about viewing experience. The only part you have wrong is aspect ratio being "black bars." With the exception of Christopher Nolan, aspect ratios for cinema are usually a 2.35:1 that is exported for public viewing. The industry doesn't just throw some black bars on their footage and call it a day. You even have examples in your video showing that they are not throwing bars on and that between standard 4K and Imax is just showing more of the frame

No wonder Dolby was so expensive when I watched Call of the Wild with the vibrating seats. I try my hardest to get the auditorium to myself, so I go the latest/last screening on Thursday night. I got the whole auditorium when I saw The Lego 2 movie in 3D as well as The Invisible Man.
