honestly I think that is a stupid rule and a very superficial take on pokemon - which are pocket MONSTERS. Many pokemon are in fact cute some are not.

Zinthaniel Not all Pokémon are cute, but the team probably chose the cute ones for this movie instead of say, Garbodor, Muk, or Raticate.

The most important part is that even though the Pokemon look realistic you can still tell they're cartoony fiction creatures.

So much detailed that pikachu designer put on that movie even the reflection of the eye and the glass, it's made me think HOLY SHIT! The creator must be addicted to the perfection....

Most of this stuff is standard in the industry. Otherwise, you end up with an uncanny valley effect where things LOOK real but don't resemble reality enough to be considered real.
The true stars of the movies are the animators and special effect artists. Without them, any movie that used special effects, and cgi, probably wouldn't be as big of a hit as they are. Thank you to all of the people that make the magic come true

Hundreds of CGI pokemon vs 1 Sonic model.
And they couldn't get that 1 sonic model right?
The animators don't design the characters, they just make what they're told to make, they dont choose what sonic or any of the pokemon look like.

Maybe it all boils down to *Design & Production Philosophy* : doing your darnest to make a great, artistic masterpiece that also can earn you money, Vs just focusing on the money and skimping out on doing the best job. Or something in between...
Whatever Paramount's deal was, it's clear that the folks who worked on Pikachu did more than everything to make sure it was a hit and a great piece of work.

@@dwijaksara The modellers don't decide what it will look like, the designers either. The designers get to follow directions and suggest what the model will look like, but ultimately the art director/director/producers get the final say on how the model looks. The modellers just do what they are told and have just as little say as the animators.

"Ew his eyes are separated again!" Nothing but hate and disgusting comments from ungrateful, disrespectful "fans" who can't even respect people's opinions. Sonic gets a redesign and guess what??? THEY'RE *_STILL_* COMPLAINING OVER HIS ARMS EVEN AFTER GETTING HIS GLOVES BACK!

Lol I laughed at the trailer too because it was funny. The design is good, the writing is nice and funny, the plot is interesting, and the trailer itself was just amusing.

I didn't enjoy the plot, but the animators made everything feel so real and vivid that made the movie fantastic. When the movie started and we got the first scene of the city I started quietly crying because of how beautiful everything was, felt like I was having a dream.
EDIT: Well, Justice Smith said himself at 7:58, it was like a dream come true.
The plot may be pretty generic but it was executed in a tolerable way

Man. Animation is so amazing. I love it when they think of all the details especially with reflection and hair/fur movement.
Now if only the rest of hollywood would do more live action anime justice by following the integrity of the anime instead of thinking what would appeal to the public and make the real fans(who will be the ones watching the damn movie) angry.

It's crazy how much work and preparation goes into a 2-3 hour movie. Always think about this while watching too. Just appreciative of their work! This movie was awesome. Brought back great memories of my childhood, plus pokemon go which i still play from time to time.
VFX artists are the real artists behind your favourite movies. thank you for bringing light to the VFX process and the artists who deserve recognition.
It is pretty significant to think that DP's VFX team managed to balance transitioning from real locations to CG elements. The suspension of disbelief is so convincing it hurts Sonic! 😆
So many comments talking about how the Sonic VFX team should take notes, but all the people commenting don't realize Sonic has the same VFX team as Detective Pikachu.

Videos like this make me really amazed at how far special effects have come. I think my favorite part was the bit about how they did the reflections in the eyes because it’s such a small detail that most people don’t notice.
AMAZING. I love seeing all this behind the scenes stuff. So the same studio who did Jungle Book did this movie. I’m glad they got a company who really knows what they’re doing.

This is why i want to watch the movie again once they release on Blu Ray. There's so many details that are unheard of especially at 5:50. I did not know about that reflection.

Detective Pikachu was such a great movie! but it's amazing to watch the behind the scenes with just so much time and effort that's been put into the film. I've already seen it twice in cinemas 😅 But that Mr.Mime scene gets me every time! 🤣
They put a lot more thought into this than I expected, and now I appreciate the film a lot more. I haven’t seen it yet, but now I really want to.

this film is some quality work. it could have been a cg-heavy nightmare but the careful use of practical effects and real locations and the diligence of the vfx artists made detective pikachu stand out not just as a great general-audience film but also as a wonderful treat for vfx nerds! thank you to everyone involved for bringing my favorite fictional world to life with such love

one thing I have to say as a pkmn fan: the effort put into these, collaboration with the realistic pkmn artist.. really was worth it. the models are so amazing I'd calmly accept them in an official game at some point in the future
