How to lock out an MSD Distributor

  • A part of my upgrades today is locking out my MSD Pro Billet Distributor on my Ford 302 engine. Originally my classic bronco came with the Duraspark ignition system, but to upgrade to the FiTech EFI you'll need a 2 wire distributor like the MSD Pro Billet. But this distributor allows small changes through weights and springs while the engine is running, so today I am going to lock it out so the FiTech can complete control the timing.
    I bought this distributor here: amzn.to/2S26u45
    Rotor Phasing Kit: amzn.to/2MkMxSD
    I'm not sure what the horse power HP gains will be for my early bronco on this upgrade, but I know my intake gave me a few more and hopefully this will help. These classic cars need all the help they can get.

    Super cringe when you launched those springs, but otherwise, this vid is 100% better than the vid Holley put out. Thanx for this and I will be giving you a shout out in my next vid.

    Thanks for your videos man! So the red rotor is not part of the distributor? You added that one after locking it out? Thanks brother!

    It's funny man, the stuff that comes to mind to say during the outtro when you are tired and talking to a piece of glass. Hahahah!

    You do some great vids. I am in the process of installing the Fitech on my 69 bronco. I need to change my distributor. What ignition control module are you running and did the MSD Pro Billit just plug right in? Or do I need to run the msd 6 box?

    • @NashvilleEarlyBronco
      @NashvilleEarlyBronco  Před 6 lety

      No control module is needed with the FiTech. The MSD pro billet plugs straight into the fitech. Saves some $$

    Great video. going to Lockout my MSD Distributor for my FI Tech EFI 4. Using a Hammer and a piece of wood to remove the Pin is what i would do but lay a piece of cloth to protect the top of the distributor. Recommend removing the Pin 1st, remove the 8mm nut, rotate the distributor head, install the 8mm nut and install the Pin. Great work anyways caveman style!

    Can you remove the magnetic pickup to replace without having to remove the distributor from the engine?? Do I need to crank the engine several times to be able to get to the screws so the weights are not in the way??

    • @NashvilleEarlyBronco
      @NashvilleEarlyBronco  Před 3 lety

      I think you have to pull it out of the engine to do this

      @@NashvilleEarlyBronco The rotor seems like there is a gap between the mag pickup and I think remove the 2 screws, is the sensor able to be lifted out without remove the weights or the rotor upwards,

    Just curious. What purpose does locking out the distributor do ? I know that it has something to do pcm but not quite sure what exactly.

      Distributors usually have vacuum advance, more RPM, more vacuum, more advance. But locking it allows the fitech to control the advance at higher RPM giving more control

    I’ve seen people rotate it like 15 degrees to help phase the rotor?! Was this all you did? Did you have to phase it later ? How much advanced timing did you end up with 32-36?

    Help I’m currently doing this step by step to your video same parts and it seems after I took the pin out the collar won’t move down. Do I keep beating on it or should I try and listen the locking screw at the top that’s just a tad to Kong to allow it to turn?

    I'm doing the same 302 msd lockout for fitech I'm new to mechanic work when I set the timing on the car and go to pull it off/out the engine do I need to mark it and put it back exactly

    • @NashvilleEarlyBronco
      @NashvilleEarlyBronco  Před 7 lety

      Yeah, I would set the car at top dead center and mark where that is, then pull it and put it back the same. If you put it back and it's off at all, your over-all timing will be off.

    Jon. Hey. Why would you lock out your electronic distributor? Everything I read says that is for a drag racer and makes for rough start? Thx

  • @Foundmylsswap
    @Foundmylsswap Před 6 lety

    if i used the factory distributor and gutted the springs and weights and then pinned it all together by drilling out weight posts and putting a screw in there would this do the same thing?

    Is is safe to say that losing the springs was purely for comedy? You didn't actually need them in the end, right?

    • @NashvilleEarlyBronco
      @NashvilleEarlyBronco  Před 6 lety +1

      +Ryan Duwe it wasn't on purpose, and no you don't need them in the end 😂

  • @randalljames1
    @randalljames1 Před 6 lety +1

    great chuckles.... you can pull those springs with your fingers.. just grab and pull them away from shaft and lift.. pop right off.. That aside.. a blob of silicone will do the same thing (for the flat rate guy out there) and it is a lot easier to undo later.. Make sure your rotor is phased correctly to the cap.. GM guys are the worst for this..

    Couldn't have made locking out a distributor seem more creepy. Parents of underage distributors beware of this guy.
