    I am always curious about these armor tests. I've always said "would you trust your life to budget armor?" Answer, yes. Militarys do it all over the world. My Level IV plates cost $380 for 3 of them. 1 to test, 2 to keep. Plus, I know what's in them, because I was there when they were manufactured. The 1 I tested, which was chosen at random, exceeded my expectations. Multiple hits, from AP rifle rounds, and little spalling.
    Free advice, if you want an easy way to control spalling with steel plates, use a level IIIA soft plate, and turn it around so that the face is facing your steel plate, with the back facing the front of your carrier. It works great for catching fragments.

    • @BuffRANGE

      @scaler1179 Před 2 lety +1

      @@BuffRANGE depends on how you attach it. Keep in mind, the majority of hits in any combat situation will rarely be head on. For this reason a rubber coating is much worth a shit either. As you allude to in one screen shot the foam on the strike face is for drop face protection on NIJ 06 and upcoming 07. This protects the strike face from cracking when dropped or bumped. The NIJ lab testing has a rig that drops the plate 2 times on its face.

  • @556RF

    Unless Wombat pulled a fast one and moved his thumb to the part of the measuring tape closest to the clay, the deformation number for the .338 Lapua is over exaggerated. If you look, he has the measuring tape almost flat on the shot shell instead of flat on the clay. That tape is at least 1" wide. So I figure there is between .5 and .75 inches added to the actual amount of deformation.

    Being shot by a 338 Lapua is usually going to be from long distance via sniper, not up close, so it will have less energy on RW impact.
    Plate carriers will do a fair amount of spall protection when combined with the foam antispall coating on the front of these things. The plate carrier is usually a tough cordura ballistic cloth.

    Ceramic plates are a good idea for logistics commanders who see numbers, not people. Single strike protection is all well and good, until you get hit multiple times, or cannot get a replacement before your next engagement

      Seriously, watch any ceramic armor test.
      Steel is going to cause shrapnel too which can end up in your arms or throat.
      Ceramic is also lighter (way lighter if you use boron carbide).
      It's literally all advantages for ceramic.
