Sustainiac pickup troubleshooting. Stop the squeal!

  • This is my first Sustainiac guitar. A Schecter Hellraiser Hybrid FR S. I bought it used and it was squealing and not sustaining on the D, A and E strings when I got it. I was going to bring it to my tech but decided to try to fix it myself. If I couldn't get it working right, I would return it.
I couldn't find any videos of how to troubleshoot it so I decided to trial and error it and document it in a video. Maybe this can help someone else with similar issues. This is what worked for me to stop the squealing and get it to sustain, although the low E string is not quite right still. It's working at what I would call 90% so that's good enough for me.
I had no idea where to start. The Sustainiac page gives general instructions of what to look for but it was confusing to me. It mentions changing out capacitors and moving wires but I was not going to do all that. I would just return it if it came to that.
Thankfully my issues were fixed with a screwdriver, even though it took me 3 hours to figure it out.

i have 3 guitars with Sustainer system. A Reverend, a Burny and a Jackson. Each one sounds different, with squeal even without touching the strings... with or without sustain depends on the volume... I didnt know that the sittings, that u show , were possible. I will try to make them sound better...but this needs a lot of time and patience.

If you have three trim pots, try turning the middle one down until the squeal stops.
I think some models have two trim pots. It should be the one towards the middle.

    Conclusion:
Buy your HellRaiser direct from Schecter or an authorized dealer so that it comes with a lifetime warranty. Their warranty says, "Your new Schecter instrument is warranted to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for the life of the original owner". I'd be requesting that my Hybrid be tested before shipping as well if bought from a authorized dealer like a guitar shop.

Yep. Trying to save a couple hundred bucks cost me hours in trial and error.

Mine buzzes like a monster when I turn it on in the third position. I can feel the strings vibrating. Almost feels like I holding a live wire. What do you think would fix that?

Either the pickups are too high (too close to the strings) or the gain is too high would be my guess.
I would turn the middle trim pot all the way down first and see if that fixes it. If it does, you might need to raise the trim pot back up a little so it sustains like you want it.
Next I would lower the pickups until it stops buzzing.
      Good luck!
Edit: you might also have to do some of both, trim pot and pickup height.

I bought a Schecter banshee and tried doing what you're doing and couldn't get anything but horrible noise. So i ended up ripping the entire sustainiac system out and replacing it with a custom Odezza pickup. John from Odezza hooked me up with everything needed to put it back together, cloth wrapped wire, pots, selector switch, two coil switches and two schematics if i wanted coil split or coil tap. Those sustainiac pickups SUCK!!! I left the sustainiac system completely assembled except for the pickup wires and battery wires so i could sell it but couldn't. Anyone wanna buy a complete sustainiac system? Oh ya, i had a problem with tht neck pickup and i think the D string being quieter then the others, are all your strings similar volume?

I LOVE the Sustainiac! Once I tweaked the trim pot, it’s working great.
All the strings are even volume.
I wish I would’ve gotten one sooner. It’s so fun to play.

Mine causes the guitar to have no output signal when first plugging it in, even though it's off. Sound slowly ramps up to normal, but has lots of noise and fuzz before it levels out. Seems to work fine after waiting for it to settle down.
