- Right next door to Keflavik airport is the municipality of Reykjanesbær, consisting of three towns: Keflavík, Njarðvík and Hafnir. In this tour we explore Keflavík town. Keflavík was founded in the 16th century when it developed as a fishing port and fish processing center. During the 2nd World War and the Cold War the Keflavík Iceland Naval Air Station played a critical role in many operations.
Information about the tour:
00:40 - Ships being repaired and maintained.
06:04 - The sign reads: Between the mountains and shore. The Purple
Sandpiper is a common bird in rocky shores where they search for
amphipods and other invertibrates in the seaweed. As the purple
sandpiper is very tame one can get close to the flocks by approaching
them slowly.
07:40 - The sign reads: Smiðshúsavör landing/launching site. From the
beginning of the fishing industry people spoke of ,,fara í róður"
literally meaning ,,go rowing" but the meaning is ,,to go fishing"
and this is reminiscent of that for hundreds of years rowing boats
were used for this purpose. People had to row their boats to the
fishing grounds, this is also called ,,útróður" (the act of going
on a rowing trip) and róðradagar (days of "rowing"). Some of these
words are still being used today even though machines have replaced
manual power in most boats.
14:40 - A fishing boat preparing to land in Keflavíkurhöfn harbour.
22:50 - Vatnsnesklettar cliffs.
23:47 - The dolerite or gray basalt of the bedrock: The bedrock
under Keflavík and Njarðvík consists of Dolerite that came from a
lava flow 200.000 years ago. It came from lava domes that probably
were located by the Keflavík airfield. There were probably also craters
at the Stabitable mountain but the sea has broken down a large part of
the volcano. At Innri-Njarðvík there is however a geographically
younger lavaplain from a lava dome that flowed 120.000 years ago.
At the marina by Grófin and the Keflavík harbour the lava appears to have
flowed into the sea because there one can observe pillowlava or broccia
formations.
25:07 - Vatnsnesviti lighthouse.
26:53 - Twice every 24 hours there is high tide and therefore twice every
24 hours there is low tide. On average there is an interval of 12 hours and 25 minutes between two high tides, thus the hour of the high tide moves
back approximately 50 minutes every 24 hours. The tides start on the
south coast and then move clockwise around the country. The tides
in the southern part of East Iceland occur 10 hours later than in
Reykjavík.
28:30 - The sign reads: The mechanisation of the marine fishing vessel
began in Iceland at the start of the 20th century. Over a period of
several decades the total fish catch of the country increased eightfold
and the national income multiplied.
33:46 - Information about the sculptures of two giants, Steinn and
Sleggja (Bolder and Sledgehammer).
40:00 - The way to Skessuhellir (Giganta's cave).
43:19 - Giganta is the creation of author Herdís Egilsdóttir, a former
elementary teacher, who in 1959 published the first story of Sigga
and Giganta in the mountain. Giganta is good-natured according to the author. She is everyone's friend and more than willing to use her size and
strength to help out her friends, the little people. The stories have
been favoured by Icelandic children and on the occasion of the formal
opening of the cave in 2008 the 16th book about Giganta was published.
47:00 - The Duus museum, the Art and Cultural Center of Reykjanesbær (Keflavík).
47:38 - Duusgata 2 to the left, built in 1877. Originally a warehouse but now part of the Reykjanesbær cultural museum.
48:00 - Duusgata 5 built in 1871. Originally a merchant house.
51:28 - Keflavík church, built in 1914.
55:17 - Now entering Hafnargata street.

So totally hooked on your walking tours of Iceland. I ♥♥ them. Someday I will visit the country. After living on Hawaii Island for many years, there is something uniquely familiar to me in Iceland, crazy as that sounds. Maybe all that lava, maybe the gorgeous water...definitely no palm trees, though. I got a tattoo in Hawaii, and wouldn't you know he (Oli), is originally from Iceland. Will keep watching. Thank you so much!
Hi Donna. Takk fyrir. I have thought the same, after all they are both volcanically active islands. Thank you so much for the kind words. Ólafur tattoo, I bet he did a great job ☺️
@@IcelandHotSpots Yes, you are correct. Olafur Adalsteinsson is an amazing tattoo artist.
Thank you 🙏 I love Iceland 🇮🇸 greetings from the Uk 🇬🇧
Thanks dannyone1
Keflavik looks so beautiful awesome and incredible. I would love to go there.
Não perco um vídeo da Islândia !!!! Amooooo obgda por compartilhar com a gente !!!!!!!
Obrigada. Keflavík é uma cidade interessante.
ISLANDIA, un país maravilloso, ordenado, culto estc. Estuvi hace poco allá, visitando a mi hija, espero volver pronto!!
Si si 😀
Wow! Brings back memories. Was stationed at Keflavik AB for a year in the early 80s. Nice tour. 👍
Thank you. Sallamaka al-lahu wa-nasaraka.
Rockville ‘69.
Iceland is the best country for tourist destinations 😁😁
Yes there is much to see
Great video from start to finish beautiful day with beautiful scenery 😀
Yes, I had never really explored Keflavík before. Nice town.
Unusual weather for November, and no wind to speak of. I had no idea Keflavik had such well-kept seafront. Whenever we are in your country, we stop there on the way out to fill up the rental car and buy some Stori Dimun cheese for home. Thanks for showing the less known parts of your country.
You can't go wrong with Stóri Dímon. Thank you I try to visit more than the best known places, Keflavík surprised me as well, I hadn't really explored it well before.
Thank you so much for this video. I went in Iceland for the first time in 2013 when I was 9 years old. Since this year, I fell deeply in love with Iceland and Keflavik. The way you took was exactly like in my souvenirs and litteraly make me cry. So thank you very very much for keeping these precious memories in my head ❤
(sorry if my english is bad cause I'm french)
I'm glad to help you bring back old memories. Thank you for sharing, these sort of comments always make me happy 🙂
OMG!!! Literally my favorite city on the planet!!! I fell in absolute love with Keflavik! I walked all over the town day and ´night´ and felt so comfortable and safe. The entire country is incredible, and everyone there was so lovely. But, Keflavk is one of those places that left a mark on my soul!
Yes this was actually my first visit there and it was surprisingly nice
Triste y solitario.
It is all so calm and quiet !! Is it always so ? Thank you very much for the beautiful walk . Have a nice day . Greetings from Greece .
It's more quiet because of the pandemic but also pretty typical for an Icelandic town in autumn.
What a beautiful day !! It’s really nice walk around Iceland, absolutely awesome experience 😊👍
Awesome views!
Small towns look great in autumn!
The Giant's Lair is something special!
It sounds like my mother-in-law came to visit!
Haha! Yes it's fun to visit if you have kids.
Thank you for these great videos! :) makes me miss Iceland, can't wait to come back
Good evening
You're welcome. Hope you don't have to wait too long.
Lovely Walking Tour! Great and Nice :) Enjoyed it! 👍👍
Awesome video. I like Island. Have a nice day my friend
Very nice, thank you so after 50+ years of being stationed at Keflavick NAS - 57th Fighter Interceptor Squadron - USAF Avionics technician I get to see the town of Keflavick. 👌 I could see it from the flight line but in 66-67 their were many travel and curfew restrictions placed on us. Did make it to Reykavik a couple of times and a couple of day bus sight seeing trips inland Pingvelir, Vatnaskoll, Gull Foss etc. looks like you have many more videos for me to review.😉 There can be little doubt now why us Americans called it "The Rock" thanks again🗽🇺🇸
Hi Hal. Very interesting, did you continue working as a avionics technician after your service? Got any cool stories? I wonder if you ever heard about the dc3 that emergency landed in Sólheimasandur. I have a walking tour from that place. Thanks for commenting Hal.
IcelandHotSpots
Hi, no after my USAF service terminated in 1970 went back to university for business degree then worked in corporate management
Finance, accounting and information technology. Flew over Iceland several times on European business trips but never landed. Donot remember any of those multi story apartment buildings when I was their 66-67. Will view the rest of your videos. Wish I had gotten the chance to travel the country more but the last six months I was there Summer and fall, we were short staffed and I was the senior avionics man always on alert, on call. Cold War then the Russian bombers and submarines were always testing NATO air and waters.
🇺🇸🗽
Very nice video, like!!
Awesome, as usual. The last time I was in Keflavik was 1969 and I don’t remember a thing! Except that the coast is still beautiful. One thing that I do remember is the racks of fish drying in the sun. Do they still have those?
Hello and thank you. Yes we still have those but very very few. I saw a few this summer way east near Borgarfjörður Eystri. We call these hjallar. Did you live here in 69?
Yes, I was at the radar station just a few miles from Keflavik for a year. I've been back twice, 2018 & '19. Anxious to come back again as soon as this COVID mess is over. We love Iceland!
@@blipjockey3100 Thank you for sharing and be back soon
Nice video! I'm staying in Hafnagata (street) in the New Year. In fact you passed the place I'll be staying! Did you manage to get from there to the capital? I don't drive and was wondering about public transport.
Yes it's just a 40 minute drive to the capital and there's a regular bus
@@IcelandHotSpots Oh that's good. Does the bus stop anywhere near Hafnagata or would I have to pick it up at the airport?
You should be able to take it from a bus stop in Keflavík
@@IcelandHotSpots Thanks
Wow. Many changes since I was there. Looking for the bakery where I discovered Icelanders do not put much sugar in donuts, or anything else for that matter as sugar was extremely rare commodity. Malt bread was the best to be had anywhere.
Did you live in Iceland for some time Thomas?
@@IcelandHotSpots Two years. ég var hermaður. þretíú og fimm ára eftir.
I imagine a lot has changed since then from your perspective. Cool to know ☺️
Why are streets so empty?
This country is looking so different from rest of the Europe . This country is looking more similar to Australia or NZ .
Yes in fact I believe they were thinking of shooting some scenes for lotr in Iceland.
