  • This is how I repaired my Swift Bolero's Remis cab side blind hinge, which snapped a few weeks back. I'm happy to hear from anyone who found an easier method, because this was a particularly difficult job. The hinge is part of a pack from www.leisureshop... Here's what I bought:

Thanks Bob, very helpful video and great comments. Just finished the job on our van. Pain in the neck. Seems a popular job this one, so hope this helps others a bit. I couldn't get the old hinge tab dug out, so I had to resort to drilling it out (3mm drill), and in the end achieved this easily, by drilling vertically down into the top of the remaining tab, without drilling the aluminium strut. This broke up the old hinge tab, and what couldn't be pulled out, was pushed harmlessly down further inside the strut. The previously drilled hole in the side of the strut seemed to be there to help clamp the tab in. After removal, just file lightly inside to remove the clamping hole burrs and any other residue, and fit the new hinge piece. I bought a pair of hinge pieces only, which were stated as being stronger, and had good reviews. These were very tight, so I simply filed the ribs on the tab's flat edges a little flatter to achieve a comfortable but tight fit in the strut, so that it can be easily levered out again next time it (hopefully doesn't!) breaks again!

It's quite a surprise how many are watching this video, which I made a few years ago, so it must be a common problem.

I just finished this repair in our RV. Man what a job. In my case I had no chance to get the lower part pulled out with a plier or screwdriver because it was so stuck and crumbly that I basically had to disintegrate all of it. Took me about 1 hour of filing, drilling (1-3 mm drill) and levering with lots of cursing to get all the remnants out of the way and have the new part fit. In the end it worked though, very satisfying :) Let's hope it lasts for a while!

Thanks for the video, Bob. I had the same problem trying to get the broken hinge part out, even though mine wasn’t glued in. Eventually by drilling 2 x 3mm holes in the end of the hinge I could use a pair of long nose pliers to pull it out. When the blind on the other side breaks (which it surely will) I’m ready!

Best and cheapest fix, drill a very small hole right through the aluminium rail/track -while positioned as it should be for the hinge to work. Then poke the smallest, neatest split pin though. Remove excess length with side cutters and spread flat. Leave a little bit of "play" in the length of the split pin length, so there is a little bit of "side way wobbble" movement. Best part is it will probably never need another repair job and you do not even have to remove the lower part of the hinge from the aluminum rail. I enquired to supplier as to the cost and waiting time for replacement plastic hinge and was told 5-6 months from Germany!! Have taken photo of finished job before dabbing with black paint to make the repair inconspicuous.

Those remis blinds are the most flimsy, complicated and expensive things known to man.
I have had mine off to try and reduce the rattles, I now have a rag suitably stuffed on the bend of the window. Will take a mental note to be even more careful than I already am when closing them.
Glad they were standard on my hymer. Curtains are much simpler!

Your views and comments would be appreciated as you always tell us as it is! Nice to see you enjoyed the baby bailey. Many thanks!

Thanks, I did feel like packing in the job in at one stage. We're members of both The Caravan and Motorhome Club and Camping and Caravanning Club. Main benefits are being able to book sites on line easily and with the CMC being able to change sites easily. Lots of help, advice, discounts and both have a magazine. For many members access to the network of club sites and smaller locations is great. Having so much to choose from.

So now I’m facing this same fiddly job and I’m not looking forward to it. Why manufacturers can’t just sell you the part you need is beyond me. That hinge should only be about two quid and probably costs them about three pence to make (in China!). If I order it now, I might get it before Christmas - 2023!

Had the same things break on our cab blinds - they look exactly the same as yours, both sides broke off within a week of one another (whats the chances) I tried gluing and plastic welding but they just would not hold - i was unaware that you could get the parts so i ended up buying a new set of blinds x2 for both driver and passenger windows - I hope the gorilla glue dont come back to bite you on the ass Bob, cos i can bet ya they will break again i its just a matter of when - bloody crap design in the first place - great vid though.

Picked a pair up off eBay for EUR 5.99
Being non genuine, they were not handed. Had to file to get pins to fit also take a bit off one side to right hand it, & a bit more gentle filing on the back to get it to swivel. Rather than glue it in, I’ve pop riveted it in, and it all works O/K. Only time will tell regarding durability.
