- At this point a subscriber is trying to get me to return an item that is scratched and used. I will not return the hole drill. I feel wrong about that and just because everybody does it doesn't make it right in my eyes. And yes their are legitimate reasons for returning it. But scamming the store once you've worn it and it fit you, you enjoyed wearing it but couldn't afford it and intentionally bought it for the purpose of returning it. Now I don't agree with. How do you feel.

It depends on what the item is and why someone wants to return it. For an electronic item such as a drill, if I was not happy with the performance or was not able to do with it what I needed, I think I'd return it as long as it was in like new condition. As far as clothes go well, I would never return an item that I had worn unless there were something really wrong (like it fell apart or something). I have heard of people getting a dress for a formal and returning it after the event! That is just wrong. They don't want to spend the money. The way I see it , well, it's just a form of stealing. If you don't want to spend the money then don't go to the event.
This is how I feel. If their is a problem with it return otherwise it's theft to me.
I remember seeing an episode of The Golden Girls where Blanche bought a dress for a formal event. And I think Dorothy spilled something on it. Blanche was so furious because it had to be dry cleaned and if it were dry cleaned, the tag would not still be attached.
The deception was there from the start.
Now, over my lifetime, when it came to items like that where I needed something that I'm probably only going to wear one time, I will get it from a consignment store. That way after I'm done wearing it, I can have it cleaned & put it back up for sale and get a little portion of what I bought it for.
There's no deception. It's understood that I have the chance to resell it because it's a resale shop ☺️

Nope. Buying something that maybe tears up after one use, I understand. If it’s my fault, I would never return. If I bought something to use and return No, absolutely not.
There are a lot of people who take used items back when they need cash for something else. It's a deceitful action and they should be ashamed of themselves.

I have returned a few things that were not the right product for the need with minimal use. I knew a woman who would see stuff at yard sales, know Walmart sold it, buy it then take it to Walmart for a refund even though she did not have the receipt. She did it with a tent that had a broken pole. First time I heard of anyone doing that but now I know people do.

So many places have options for renting items auto parts stores loan tools in lot use costume shops with clothing amd accessories need a back hoe dozer place for that to rent it . Thank you Lindy for being the change we want to see love you super bunches 💐🥒🌻🐝
I worked at Sears back in the 70's, that's when their motto was "the customer is always right". We had piles of returns in the stock room of worn lingerie, panties, girdles, bras, pantyhose, the pantyhose returns is what boggled my mind, they'd wear them, get a run or snag and bring them back to the store and credit their Sears card or give them cash back.

Lindy, this is an easy one! No ands ifs or buts! No , like, " well, in this situation i could return it because . . .". In my opinion, its just, barring manufacturer's defects, a big fat NO.

That made me laugh. People do the weirdest things!
I purchased a handheld vacuum. It was sold as new.
When it came, the box was gritty. No big deal (I've seen what these things go through during shipping, so it didn't surprise me.)
I opened the package and immediately saw not more grit, but dirt and sand.
So the hose part of it was in a plastic sheeting, but the vacuum itself wasn't packaged at all.
The handle was sticky, then I took off the nozzle and the reusable filter was full of pet hair and dirt.
I double checked the description to make sure that I had not purchased a used one.
I immediately requested a refund and took pictures to post w my review. But what I've noticed is that after three times of posting it, Amazon would not post my review nor my pictures.
I mean it's a reusable filter. The least someone could have done is knocked it off and then put it under cool water to rinse it out and dry it. And somebody could have at least taken a wipe or something and cleaned off that nasty handle.
My daughter said that it might have been an independent seller. But I read the description it said brand new still in package. Brand new tells me never used.
Now, if something is new and it's more than I can handle, I will. (I had to return a heavier drill for a lighter one. I couldn't handle the heavier one. My arm kept getting tired; it had too much torque even at the lightest level; and it was hard to get the precision right. It kept slipping even w a clamp.
I used it (or tried) for a day and wasted so much time and still didn't get a quarter way through my project.
I sure did take it back for a lighter one and was done within two hours. If the store sells it as new, that's on them, but if I buy something as new and is clearly been used, I will go right to customer service and I will ask them to take something off the price.
I was putting hinges on screen doors to make them swing out instead of slide on my patio that I was enclosing.
The lighter drill was exactly what I needed. There's no way in the world that I'm going to keep a bigger heavier item that has absolutely no use. To me, having one that I absolutely cannot use, is not good stewardship. It's just sitting around, the money that I spent on that one, I'm able to spend on the one that I can actually use, and if the store wants to sell it as new, that's on the store. That's not on me.
And then there could be an opportunity for someone who needed the heavier drill. If I had not returned it, it would just be sitting in a corner at my house gathering dust and not being used.
Now, of it's something like socks or undergarments, that would be a definite NO to returning.
Legitimate issues are not in question.
I agree with you! I can’t imagine especially a dress that is expensive returning it when it’s been worn. It’s obvious it’s been worn. Or even a tool etc. I especially like your example of the movie…. I didn’t like it so I want my money back!😂

I just started listening to you & I think that you're adorable. Although I do not think the idea of buying something and returning it after you've used it is right. IF the product is not good, or it causes you some harm, then you have a right to return it.
Here's the point I'd like to make, right or wrong on the consumers; don't think for a second that the price gouging is because of people returning an item. Oh no. These mass retailers price gouge because they can and they are greedy. Sorry, that's the ugly truth of it.

They can and do resell items returned. If the intent on buying an item is to use it then return it, that is wrong. If it is defective and, maybe if you bought the wrong item( admitting you bought the wrong item) then it is acceptable , IMO.

It's wrong if it has been used unless item was defective. I mark it up as a mistake on my part if not what I needed or wanted. Your right we all pay higher prices as a result of fraudulent returns.
A long time ago a co-worker bought a fancy dress for our company Christmas party. She wore it and then returned it. I never thought the same about her. So wrong.
Here we have a lending library that has tools among a lot of other things. Maybe check with your library in the future if you need something that will only be used once. It's worth giving it a try. I also think that it is wrong to return things you have used.
I believe if your purchase something, use it and then return it, that’s dishonest! Now the store has to raise the prices to accommodate their loss! So everyone has to pay more!

@ 1:29 re repackaging, this is why a lot of stores will charge a restocking fee.
It's to make the consumer think twice before returning it. If they charge me $7 to restock a $15 item, I'm going to rethink what my true intent is before I purchase the item
A lot of people will purchase the big screen TVs for things like the super bowl, then they will charge people who come over a price and they might have things like wings, beer, chips, all you can eat. Then after the game is over, they'll return the big screen and then the store will resell it as an unboxed item.
I think that's why most stores have a restocking fee. It's times like that when I just wonder why people just don't rent something for the day from one of these rental places.
You can rent anything nowadays from a sofa to appliances, why not just rent The Big ticket item, and be done with it. There's no deception, you did not plan on keeping it, which is why it was rented in the first place, they could have still charged to have their super bowl get together, provided all this food, and then they can take the TV back without the deception of buying a brand new TV and then getting it back to the store.
I was security for about 10 yrs doing pubs and shopping centers before moving into hospital security... People disappoint u all the time but u have to believe people grow and change or how would u get out of bed every morning .. .. Yeah, I don't agree with using something in returning it unless.Of course it was defective and broke. But I have heard of people that buy like dresses or suits and wore it for an event and then return it. I believe in the long run It costs all of us for those types of things.
If I buy something and it works I keep it even if I may never use it again. If it doesn’t work I return it. Simple and easy rules. Now, if I use it and it works but I probably won’t use it again I will either give it to someone who can use it or I will donate it to a thrift shop..

I would never buy something I needed, used it, the return it. I used to sell on eBay and belong to some eBay sellers groups on Facebook. The horror stories I see in those groups. It’s awful.
You are right to not return it. I just don't understand how some people think. I worked with a person who would buy an air conditioner from Costco and when the summer was over he would return it. He did that with lots of things. That is so tacky. I hope you can get this person off your back.
My husband and I having our own catering business in So Cal and catering for the very interesting OC Housewives. We even had the very rich tell us after an event that the food wasn’t quit what they expected and didn’t want to pay. Brides are the worst. Sad what our country has become.
The worst thing I have seen is people returning their kids toys the day after Christmas! Most are Probaby gifts from non profit organizations. Imagine those children’s heartbreak.

I have seen that done. One year, it was a very hard time we were going through, someone had put our name on The Empty Stocking list. My kids were 10, 5, and 3.
I was content with going to the thrift store and finding a few things that year that were in pretty good condition.(A ride on toy, a Tonka truck, a basketball).
I was so grateful to find out that someone had even thought about my children to put their name in.
The police department that was hosting it called me and I went down and in the lower part of the building, there was a huge pegboard on all four sides of the room separated by age.
I was waiting for someone to come out and tell me how it works but in the meantime I was trying to look at all the things for the specific age group and pick the one item.
Each board was separated by age group & gender (5-8/girl, tea set, Barbie bus, 9-11/girl, jewelry/bead making kit, etc. boys/Tonka truck, t ball set, the handheld video game that they usually sell for about $12 that has about 30 games in it, etc. the pegboard was at least 7 ft high. Then there were new packs of socks, underwear and various sizes, undershirts, there were jeans, and jackets. It was like being in a department store.
Well, I overheard two women speaking and they were saying how none of the stuff there would be worth returning to the store because they couldn't get any "real money" for it 😡
I remember thinking to myself why don't you just rob a Toys r Us then?? Maybe they didn't realize that we were in a police station.🤦♀️
An officer came out to me and I told him that I think my daughter would like one doll, and my sons would like a skateboard or scooter. I figured if I could get the play items here, then I could use the money I had saved to get them each a new pair of sneakers for school and things like socks and shirts. I have kept a Christmas club since I was five. My mom started me with one when she opened up a savings bank account for me. This was in '75. My dad will bring home a brown bag of pennies for me and whatever I could wrap, by my mom's Friday night late night, was mine to keep for her to deposit. I learned to save for simple goals very early. I learned to count by twos and threes in first grade because then I could wrap them quicker. And I remember having to write my account number on the outside. That first year, I solved the Saturday morning cartoon arguments by buying my very own black & white TV! All FOUR channels were MINE!🤣😊)
But I digress...as I am pointing to the one item that I think the children would want, he says to me, "No, ma'am. You get EVERYTHING on the board!"😭😭😭
When I got home, I went through the items and I held out a few things for each of their upcoming birthdays (January, May, & June). There were so many blessings!
I wrapped each toy/item in different paper. (Because ripping the paper is really the best part).
Over the years, when things have gotten really tight, I have looked around the house and I have found things that the children have not even or rarely used and I will rewrap those items and regift them to them. 😁
My oldest turned 31 last week, my second one is home from college before he starts a paid internship, and my last one graduated college w under $2k in debt, signed on with an international company, & just bought a house. She turns 24 in June.
They all remember their regifting mom 🥰

I feel if I "tried" to use it and it didn't perform as it was supposed to, then yes. I will return it as it was defective. BUT, if I used it and it performed as it was supposed to, then no way! I bought a product with an expectation of it performing a task. If it did what it was intended to do, then I paid money for a functioning product and it was money well spent. Now, if I don't need it any longer I could resell it myself through resell websites or to a friend...whatever, but I'd never return the item from where I purchased it for a refund.
That's just not right!

Never would suggest that someone buy clothing & wear it for a while, decide they don't like & then try to return it... no, no, no.
I will ( & have) returned items that once I got them home & tried them & they didn't work, yes I will return them.
Depending on the store's policy, some items are NOT returnable & that's accepted.

I would only return something if it was damaged or unusable before I could use it, or if I didn't open the package yet and just changed my mind.
If the policy is only unused items can be returned, I won't buy from them. The reason is that, I may find there is a problem with the item.
If I purchase something, use it, and find it doesn't, for whatever reason, work as I wanted, I return it as "Used, didn't meet my requirements."
If I purchase and use and find it faulty, I return it as "Used, faulty"
If I purchase new, and don't use it, I return as new.

This is a topic that bugs me, too. I've seen so many people talk about returning stuff that they've used, not because there was anything wrong with the item, but because they needed the money, they didn't like the color once they wore it or used it, etc. One issue these days is our ordering stuff online without being able to try clothing on or examine the item in person. We get it and it doesn't even begin to fit, or we don't like how it's made, and the box is destroyed as is the inner packing. When we buy multiples of something that is also an issue. I made the mistake of ordering three lovely pairs of shorts in different colors but when I got them, they were way too small. Same with some underwear. I am going to give them to a friend who is much smaller than me. But I could have taken them in to exchange, but didn't know where. Sometimes new stuff is give to charity, and that is fine, too. Online purchases has caused this problem to be much bigger.
But to respond directly to the question you pose, I don't like it when someone does that, but store policy should allow only limited returns under certain circumstances. Big companies do have outlets for used merchandise. They can sell them on eBay or other platform. Amazon Marketplace is used or refurbished stuff. I got a ceiling fan at a great price there because they didn't have any more of what I needed. Said it was "Just like new, works like new." I took a chance and saved a lot of money, and it was perfect. Amazon Marketplace is one of their outlets. It is up to the store to control returns. One issue is that a person will buy a product and use it for a year, buy the exact same product a year later, put the old product back in the new container they just bought, and take the old one back, saying it looks used or whatever. There are crooks among us, and they think that because the company is so big, it's OK to cheat them. Karma is watching, though. We get away with nothing in this life.

If item is defective then return it, if not it is not the right thing to do period! I have heard of people wearing clothing for a special event, then return the items after wearing them. I do not want a friendship or anything to do with these kind of people especially inviting them in my home. Their hygeine must be terrible! I, myself wouldn't do it. A friend and I went overseas recently, and she bought a universal international wall plug in with USB plugs and electric plugs. It was a cube that accommodated their round type sockets and was very handy for charging our electronics. Shortly after our trip we were shopping, and I noticed it packed in its original plastic packaging sitting on the floor of her car. When I asked her why it was there, she replied she was taking it back for a refund since she was done with it. It cost $30, which she thought was high. Her daughter had done the same thing with a tent she had used for a weekend camping trip. I think it's distasteful and underhanded but did not say so. The plug could definitely be sold again, but a tent? Sometimes it's about your scruples, I guess. Love your talks. Gets people thinking, right? See you on the live in a while!
There are exceptions, of course, but I agree, most of the time, if you've used it, it's yours now.
Someone who worked at the kmart here (since closed) said people would get camping gear on Friday- and bring it back on Monday. With leaves, dirt etc. No shame.
Okay, when I was a teenager, I may have returned some clothes. I'm not proud of it now but that is life. When I growed up, if I needed something I didn't have, I rented it. You know that WEF saying that we will have nothing and be happy about it? The people that live like they are just borrowing things from the stores are people that are going to be happy about being in a situation like that huh?

0:55 if I return something it is not used. I bought something at a yard sale that was not used and I returned it to the store. If you do that without a receipt and they use the credit card the money goes to them. So anytime I encounter something like that that is not used.

I agree if you use/damage something don’t return it. I bought a cabin air filter for my Jeep, I opened where it is supposed to go, there wasn’t one there and no way you put one. I twisted it squished it up trying to figure out how it might fit. No way. I did return a 10 piece set of car seat covers, steering wheel cover etc. I put on some of the pieces, but when I had time, the seat covers wouldn’t stay down, they kept sliding up. I returned the set, there was no damage to the pieces I had used for a day or two.
In your case, I would return the item. If I wear or use something, I will keep it, that's how I roll. Actually, I was Very surprised when I learned of this, thru someone in my family. They acted like it was no big deal. "They do it all the time, the didn't use fragrance, kept tags on". I cannot do that. I can't say if it right or wrong, although, the stores take the item back.
I have to think if I returned something. The only time I returned something is if it was defective or didn't fit. I can't imagine how people wear something with the tag left on and return it like I've heard was a thing. It comes down to morals, I think. I took some raw meat back once because it smelled bad.
Tell the person to drop it.
As a retail manager and DM if there is something wrong with it, we would mark it out so I don't mind. But if it's just because they don't need it but used it. It's not ok. We have to take a hit on the money. It's no longer a damaged item. When this happens, the CUSTOMER takes the hit. The money will come from somewhere and the big retail company is not going to

I always open packages carefully and retain all the bags etc... in case it doesn't work or isn't the right item. I'm more concerned with people who will not return any item. Take, for instance, a food product, even pet food. IF it isn't what you expected (from packaging or advertising) then take it back. Manufacturers won't change their products for the better if you don't return it--they don't pay attention otherwise.
Back when I was younger my friends would laugh about what they called "Radio Shack Rentals." Those were items that you went in knowing you would use the item and return it afterwards. It's just wrong.

In the examples you presented, it would be dishonest and unethical to return the item. Problem is, we now live in a world with a huge number of people who act as if they’re entitled to do whatever they please just because they’re alive and breathing. Maybe it’s just here in America, but it’s very sad to see.

So I thought I left a comment, but I don't see it, so forgive me if I am repeating myself. Unless it's damaged, you bought it, you keep it. So you are right. Plus, you never know if it will come in handy someday for something else.

Different stores have different policies. Buying something with the intention of useing it once then returning it is dishonest. If you buy something and later find you made a mistake, or don't need it, it is ok at most stores to return. I like shopping at Lowe's and Publix, a grocery store, whose policy is never to disappoint the customer, and will except returns no questions asked.
There is some people that do that but I never have but it's not right
I personally would not take anything back for a refund after I’d used it unless it didn’t work. I’d keep the saw thingy as part of my tool collection for possible future use. If I didn’t want it anymore I’d have one of my grandchildren sell it for me on line because it’s used or give it to someone who could really use it. 😆

If I get the use/performance I expected (as advertised) then no, returning it is like stealing. However, I recently returned a mini dehumidifier that cost $44 but it used in one night more electricity than my fridge in 3 days! I dried it out and returned it. I think it is generally wrong but there are acceptable exceptions.
I consider buying something, using it and returning it theft. The person has stolen the amount of money between the value of the iitem new and the value of the item used.
If I have used something, I keep it.
You should list it for sale to try and recoup some of your money. If no one buys it then donate it to someone who is self employed.

I only return things that I bought that don't work right or don't fit right I think it's unethical to buy something and use it for the purpose that you bought it and then return it. In your case it didn't work properly for the purpose you bought it for so I believe that it was right for you to be able to return it.
It did put the hole in the van. My drill was not powerful enough but the collision shop used it with a more powerful drill and it put the hole in the van. It served its purpose.
@@l.a.v.alindysawesomevanadv3428 in that case I would sell it to an air conditioner, construction, auto repair company, or to someone needing it. You have good morals and instincts. A lot of people today don't even take the time to question whether or not it is ethical to return something.

If I use it I keep it unless it didn't work because it was defective.
It depends if you open it and it doesn't work or there's visible damage return it you paid for it but people actually using something temporarily or to get something done then decide they want their money back that's wrong and dishonest
There are many legitimate reasons to return an item to the retailer, but to simply return it AFTER USING IT when it’s not defective or damaged shouldn’t be a legitimate reason, in my opinion
we never return anything...too much of a hassle...we just give it away or take it to a thrift store :)
I watched most of a movie in a cinema & it sucked & I got my money back. It was in 1982. Lots of people left the theatre. Some asked for a refund & some didn’t. Still the worst movie I ever tried to watch!

If the scratched up item you bought works fine other than the dings, keep it. In this day and age be lucky it does the job. How do you think it got the dings? It was returned, store repackaged it, and you bought it. Stores return products to packaging all the time. It's not the customers fault the package was so hard to open in the first place. You seem to be taking both sides on this issue. Don't. Now you are strictly a consumer watching where your money goes. Don't worry about the store's profit margins. Store's have everything in place for any returns. It's on the receipt. If you're not satisfied with a product and you want to get your money back, or store credit, that's up to you and the store. Nothing more or less.

No one suggestion is not the problem it's when I give my answer to someone and they continue to tell me to do the same thing. Since I have answered why continue to discuss what this person wants me to do. I get thousands of comments and I responded to everyone in some manner. That's a lot of time which I enjoy doing but not giving the same response over and over again. I hope this explains what I am talking about.

Buying something, using it, it's not broke and returning it is very dishonest. Renting a tool is better. If you buy something, it breaks then it's okay to return it.
