Let me save a brother if I can, that has a f150 2006 stx, planning on buying this backup camera. This tutorial is pretty good, the only major problem I had was with getting a “No signal” after the first try. Spent a couple of hours troubleshooting the issue. The problem was related to the power and ground cable. You need to use both red cables to successfully power the camera. The provided instructions and this tutorial video state you can only use one red cable from either the end or beginning of the crossing wire. Do both! From the end, tap the red and ground to the tail light reverse harness. Fyi, the wire provided has a really crappy 22+ gauge so be patient when stripping the cables. Also, I noticed the reverse signal didn’t prompt every time. In my case, I had to wiggle a bit after shifting to reverse to trigger the signal properly, but that’s my truck acting up a bit lol Happy wiring!
Good info! Unfortunately, you have made the common error that many have made regarding wiring these to a head unit with a reverse wire. Connecting the red wire of the camera to the reverse light and then to the reverse wire of the head unit could cause damage to the light, head unit, camera or possibly all 3. A separate wire (not included) needs to be connected from the reverse light power to the reverse wire of the head unit. This will activate the sensor to let the head unit know the vehicle is in reverse. Proper way is actually simple. From the camera connect the 2 red wires off the pigtail and ground the black. On the head unit side, connect RCA to camera input, take red wire and tap it into red wire power source of head unit.

I would love some more detail how the wires ran under the truck and specifically how you brought it into the cab!
I can't find it now, but I saw one video or step-by-step and they attached the wire to the rail (frame) with zip ties. That might sound ghetto, but it looked very professional - just like any other wiring that ran the length of the truck. I don't know if it was the same video/how-to, but as far as bringing the wire into the cab, there's a hole on the driver side floor board that they used, ran the wire through and basically plugged it with a rubber grommet. This is the method I want to use, but I can't find the tutorial I saw before...
Looking carefully you can straight out see it's ran on the driver's side of the truck its not that hard the cat is a dead giveaway
This video came at the right time cause I just replaced my head unit and it came with that reverse cam feature. So now I know where to find the right cam for the job, thanks

Interesting. I just installed the license plate camera and I'm not having any problem at all at night with the image being washed out by the license plate lights. I'm actually surprised how good the image is at night. I purchased the eRapta ERT02 camera from Amazon. Maybe it's worse on some trucks than others. My truck is a 2007 Toyota Tundra.

How would you use this method with a rear camera and mirror monitor kit? Could you add the stand alone camera that comes with the mirror kit into the original tailgate bezel?
So how do you take your tailgate off with that wiring inside? I am always taking mine off to load heavy items with a Bobcat or forklift. The place I put the camera was under the license plate and over the bumper. My tailgate has a nice chrome handle not that cheap black plastic junk.
Just curious, why didn't you just connect the power wire closer to the camera to a reverse light instead of messing with the fuse box? You should still have been able to connect the shorter power wire near the RCA directly to the back of your head unit triggering it to show your back up camera. I am just interested if that would that way as I am getting ready to put the same camera on my truck but don't want to have to run more wire than necessary.
If you want constant power to your camera to view even when you are not in reverse will this wiring technique be sufficient?

I have 2001 F150 supercrew. I have a Boss BV765BLC came with a Back Up Camera. I’m wanting my back up camera to turn on when I put my truck into reverse. Also I want to be able to see my trailer loaded when I’m driving down the road. How would I wire it to come on two ways.
I just installed this camera. I might be dumb but I hooked up both of the red wires. One at the radio and one at the back. My camera works but it turns off when I turn my headlights on. When my head lights are off it works great. Any ideas??
What are the three wires you spliced together, are two of them already connected and you add the third one from that first lower corner wire?
1 wire from HU, 1 wire from splice @ fuse panel, 1 wire to camera for power. avoids need to connect to tail light wiring. don't use a wire nut though, use a butt crimp

Hi Vincent! Good suggestion, and I should have included some of that in the episode. As this truck is my daily driver, I have since been relying on the backup camera I installed during this episode every time I back up! It does surprisingly well at night, too. Of course there has to be some light in order for it to work worth a damn but it's surprised me even when it's been raining and very little light, I still have enough to go on. Maybe I'll do a follow-up video or post something to my IG @chrisduketv Happy new year!

Where did you end up hooking up the negative wire? On the taillight?
Just to an existing bolt or fastener near the bumper. Anything that screws into bare metal should be fine!
I don’t like how the bumper is out of frame Incase you want to reverse really close to things or a trailer hitch

Norm Storm I put aftermarket camera/handle on my 06 and found its not the best. It shows more of the hitch area than straight back view like most cars/trucks. And you guessed it....no way to adjust angle of camera.
How does one purchase an aftermarket rear view mirror?

I ordered a pioneer head unit an this camera at the same time. Installed them today an both work great but I don't have a grid on my back up? How do I get it to work/come on? Thanks for the help
if yoiu cut the green wire you will have to hook it back up and cut the white wire for normal view, i cut the white wire and i have the grid lines
I understand the 3 wires in the back of the head unit and the wire from the reverse from back of the fuse box but the negative and positive in be back by the tail light Did you hook that positive to the reverse light or a break light ?

If you connect that wire to a brake light the camera will get power everytime you press the brakes...
So how about an update on this BU Camera. I've been looking for one and all I see are horrible reviews and companies that do not back their products. How is this one doing???
I've been using since I installed it in my F-150 in this episode and it works every day, every time, without fail. Great at night too. I have had zero issues with it... this is one of my best mods and I highly recommend it!
@@chris Thank you for the reply. It's about 1.5 years after your install and still good, so I'd say this is worth the buy. Many I have seen on Amazon have pretty horrible reviews. It's good to know yours is still doing the job. Only new question is, where do you live? Most of the bad reviews came from the cold weather North.

Help pz i bought the same tail gate cam and installed it the way you explained the one problem i have is the right side is really the left side , so its reversed, my Head unit is an older one Pioneer avh p3200bt , I set polarity to battery and camera to on ,any help is appericated thankyoiu all James

Did you hook up the power wire on the HU to the splice at the fuse box? Should be the reverse wire from the HU instead.
Everthing is opposite right is left and left is right anyone know how to fix this prob any help would be appericated
Many head units have a setting for that.

Souvy you can find any bolt that touches bare metal and ground it there. It just needs to touch metal.
