Ford Truck Back-Up Camera Install (Tailgate Handle)

  • I wanted to install a back up camera into our Ford Explorer Sport Trac but, the only problem was that I did know know where to wire the camera with it either looking tacky (the ones that screw on to the license plate) or just a bit off. One day I was driving down the street and I saw a Ford F-150 with a backup camera in the handle. no I didn't see one of our trucks of Ford Explorer Sport Trac with that same hat and this got me thinking.

    Very nice video. It is not to long or too detailed. It shows people everything they will be getting into before they start on such a project. Even the music is tolerable. I've been using a DIY license plate camera on my F150 hooked up to a headrest type DVD monitor. It's great for lining up my trailer hitch in the left right direction but not so great for seeing where I am front-to-back. I've been thinking about how to mount it near the top of the tailgate without cutting any holes in the painted part of the tailgate. Mounting it, or another camera, in the handle might work.

    If you remove the latch rod clips, they should usually be replaced. This is the green clips when it says you don't need to do this. These are available new from Dorman HELP! line in most parts stores.
    He didn't directly explain it in the video , but you don't need to release the latch rod clips. You can simply unbolt the handle assembly and drop it out. This will leave the latch mechanism in place so there is no need to adjust it, which is the cheap & quick method. The "working on my own truck and keeping it forever" method is to have the clips on hand and replace them since they are cheap plastic pieces. While I am in there and they are easy to reach, I will replace the clips.

    Looking to do a similar install, thanks for detailing what you found. I was glad to see you solder the wires - too many people twist and use a wire nut. That works until it meets water and time will rust / corrode it out. Even better is to slide some heat shrink tubing over the wires before you solder, then heat it up and let it make a real tight seal. Better than electrical tape in my opinion.

      me on the previous truck I owned (2001 S10 ZR2) the previous owner had literally twisted the wires together on the taillight when installing towing electronics. They had used bad quality electrical tape to cover it, too. Well, I ended up getting pulled over for it, thank goodness the officer was forgiving.

    Installing a reverse camera and subs to my 2010 sporttrac. Couldn’t for the life of me find a good spot to get the video wire into the cab. Was really trying to avoid going through the firewall to save cord length but seeing as that’s what you did I think I’ll end up doing that as well. Seems to be the easiest route. Hopefully I can find another good entry point for my subs power wire as that grommet won’t have enough space for both. Thanks for the video!

    Listen, don't be dog bark bashing. You need to plan your vids around the barking dogs schedule. If you don't, I will contact Sarah Mclachlan and she will charge you $29.99 a month and she will make all of your radio stations and CDs play that In the Arms of an Angel song in continuous loop. Oh and the ASPCA Gestapo will come and tazer you.
    All seriousness aside lol, that was a good and informative video. Time for me to do the same project.

    Got a question on your stereo install. What dash kit did you use to hook the stereo up to the factory bolt spots. I have an 04 F150 and bought a similar stereo but cant find an aftermarket dash kit that will fit the stereo properly into place.

    I have a boss double din radio. Installation went great, because I watched your video. However, having trouble connecting the backup camera due to canbus. Do you have any recommendations for wire harnesses that use a canbus? I’ve been trying to find some at Amazon but none make sense for my 2007 Sports trac. Can you provide a wire harness using the canbus?

    • @rino1901
      @rino1901 Před 6 lety

      The sport trac is the 4 door ranger that's been sold in Mexico and Canada for 20+ yrs and over seas.
      All ford trucks actually use the same stuff and with the suv's aswell.
      Edge, explorer, expedition, f150 and 250
      Parts are interchangeable for the most park. Mirrors, badges, handles, radios, steering wheels, gauge cluster.
      The reason why some things say they don't fit is because the seller pulled it from a certain yr and thinks it only fits that yr.
      I have an 04 ford freestyle van touch radio in my 08 f150 because I didn't wanna pay 300+ for the same radio.
