Telling you how it is IRL. Breaking down Amazon Prime Rings of Power (episode 5) sword fight scene with Galadriel. What is cool and what it totally foolish. LOTR fans can pick apart the lore, i'll review their choreography.

Yes!, EXCEPT if their sword is controlling the center or you anticipate and intercept their attack, to drive it away. In HEMA a "Shielhau" is an example of attacking their sword. Of course you would immediately follow up with a strike to their person

  • @bobstanky9700

She's not even really training them, she's just sparring with them while they attack her wildly while she shows them all up by outmaneuvering all their attacks. The intent is to show how badass she is, not to legitimately train a group of soldiers in swordsmanship. But the soldier's/pre-teens clearly don't have any idea what they're doing, so it doesn't really make her look like she's skilled when she's going up against people who look like they just picked up a sword for the first time.
I know it's fantasy, but they couldn't have hired an expert to make sure the fight scenes didn't look goofy as hell, with that billion dollar budget?

She is clearly a commissioned officer and got the command of the north from daddy, she definitely didn't earn it.

@@BachataKnight Thanks, man. Appreciate that. yeah, once you know the lore behind this, it's maddening. No fight choreographer is taking credit for it. One thing to understand is that the people she is "training" (ie. making fun of so the show can make her look 'awesome' which she isn't) are the Númenóreans. The greatest and most powerful warriors in Tolkien's world. And the show made them all stumbling dolts just for Galadriel to show off (and with horrible technique). "Come at me, bro." It's just insulting. To make it worse, they are all about to head out for war and they couldn't cut a watermelon in half. But hey, it's Amazon. Who needs logic? Let's just have a dance number and it will all be fine. For the love of all that is good and holy, this show should have never been made.

the problem is the training/sparring scene and they use real swords, what happen if any of those swing lands? one of them will be dead , maybe without head ...should've used wooden swords ..and why they even trained in an alley with steps? not in barracks?, I mean in the books, Numenor is such a advanced kingdom with great cities by this time in second age, they should have a proper training ground at least.

The scene that inspired you: That's a single edged blade, she was holding the flat to him...
'Attacking the sword' - this is proper stage combat, actors are not fighters, you give them a pointy object and tell them to aim for the other actor, you most likely will have an injured actor. They intentionally aim off line and out of distance. It's the job of the cameraman and director to make it look real while the actors fight in a way that keep each other safe. The director and crew just completely failed on that one.

None of the actors know jack about swordfighting. That’s okay, most actors don’t.
The director don’t know jack about swordfighting. Also okay: not his job.
Stuntmen, stuntwomen and fight choreographers know swordfighting. That is their jobs, that is their purpose.
But this fight was shot without stunt doubles, in a single day - which makesme think that it might have been improvised beat by beat, rather than planned and rehearsed. I don’t know who the stunt coordinator was that day. Maybe sick? Maybe this is the director himself and some brave actors doing the best they could with the time and resources they had available?
But no matter how bad it is as fight choreography, it is worse from a writers perspective. I know very little about swordfighting (more than these people, but that’s a very low bar) but I do know at least a few somethings about writing, and this scene is an absolute mess.

@@puline397 Hi, short version: Galadriel is showing off and humiliating the noobs instead of teaching them, that makes her unsympathetic to us viewers. Also it is a waste of time, because this show has already told us, multiple times that she has superpowers. Going forth, that should only be used to resolve problems when the story needs it, another scene that only repeats that she has superpowers without doing anything else is frustrating. Finally, it’s a load of lost opportunity. Training scenes can be used to reveal character of those involved. Are they timid or overconfident, angry or stoic, impulsive or careful, how do they hold themselves in small victories and defeats, what are their relationships to each other? And so on. Characters can get angry with each other and build conflict, or they can support each other and bond closer. Stuff can happen that moves the plot along, like when Theo decides to trust Arondir with the Saurons nasty sword. But this scene does nothing. Except make Galadriel look bad. Although the last part is unintentional, as far as I can tell. (Both music and facial expressions seems to be telling us that we should be happy and clapping.)
I think HelloFutureMe has made a good video about writing action scenes. And probably Brandon Sanderson.
      Good luck!

Ever watched a fencing training / sword training session? The intent was to present Galadriel as superior in weaponry. The show runners did not succeed in conveying that. Rather, all it achieves is show that she is superior than raw recruits who know nothing about swordsmanship. How does this make the character look honourable and worthy of respect? It only makes her look smug and arrogant. That is not how to go about teaching or training; certainly, not preparing for war where they might die.
