- Hey there, Vern. I’m so glad you’re here to join us today.
Do you remember Ernest P. Worrell - the first viral superstar? "KnoWhutImean?” He was huge before smartphones and that strange new app called tik tok that all the kids are on nowadays.
“Today’s the day Vern, when Ernest will go down in those big, thick history books.”
So come on, let’s look at the colorful life and tragic ending of Jim Varney, the man that stared straight into the hearts of all media lovers in the 80s and 90s. But if you think Ernest was all Varney accomplished, or that Jim himself was a bubbling fooled - you’d be sorely mistaken. Jim always had a knack for making people laugh. The people who worked with him said that he was funnier off camera than he was on. Ernest was lovable, goofy beyond belief, and very relatable. We all know someone like him and that’s why the character was so successful. I’m looking at you Uncle Glenn.
I’m your host - Nostalgic Nick! And let’s jump on in and see if I can channel as much contagious energy as Ernest! If you enjoy this video, please give it a thumbs up, don’t be shy, Ernest never was. and subscribe to our channel so you never miss an episode!

WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER MOST ABOUT JIM VARNEY? 🤔
Probably Ernest Goes to Jail was one I watched many times. Something about Felix or as I call him Evil Ernest is always funny to me. My Brother RIP was a big fan or the Ernest movies' and got me hooked on them.
Seeing him at the car wash in the city in Tennessee where we both lived. No I did not say" Know what I mean Vern " but I did say hello and so did he. He was washing his De Lorean.
My all-time favorite Ernest movie is "Ernest Saves Christmas. I may have commented on this before, so I apologize for repeating it if I did. Ernest Saves Christmas was the funniest ever!!!
I also adored him in the role of "Jed Clampett" in the movie version of "The Beverly Hillbillies. True, he was no Buddy Ebsen, but he brought his own unique style to the role, and that's what I loved about him in this film.
One of my favorite commercials was the one with the tv where he said “my daddy used to work on them” before getting shocked. My dad was a repairman so I loved it.
I was lucky enough to meet him at some gas station when I was a kid. I walked up and asked if he was Ernest. He laughed and said, 'Only when I'm workin'.' He was, in fact, one of the nicest people I've ever met. Three years later, I randomly happened to bump into him again. And, to my utter superprise, he remembered me. THAT blew my mind. So sad that he went so soon.
That's a great memory
That's cool. Seemed like a genuine guy.
You casually bumped into Jim Varney twice. You're a Legend my guy.
The man deserved so much more time here. He'll always be my childhood hero.
Thank you for sharing! That sounds like a great memory.
All I gotta say is "Ernest Scared Stupid."
The best Halloween movie EVER.
Troll: Ernest you're going to pay for your forefathers doings!
Ernest: 4 father's? I only had one father and I didn't know him all that well..... 😂 Lol 😂

Kill it with Miak 🤣

I actually dressed up as Ernest one year for Halloween. Had the whole getup...
His khaki hat, the gray pocket tee with denim Wrangler vest.. Even the shoes.. It was perfect. I even practiced enough and got good at his facial expression when he goes "Eeeeeeewwwwwwww"
Everyone knew exactly who I was
I was almost scared to watch this because so many of these videos expose how awful these people usually are. It warms my heart to know he was such an amazing person both on and off screen. Thank you, Jim, for everything. You helped make my childhood an enjoyable one.
Yeah I feel you on that one. Makes it even more beautiful when a man like this can exist, in a world like this. Know what I mean?
Same here.
Yea, I know. Same here. You have an image of a person and the some jerk on CZcams cone along and ultimately shatters it. It's so amazing to know that at least some of the people who made my childhood great were actually as wonderful and decent as I originally thought, if not better
Same here, super relieved now
I worked with Jim on “ Ernest rides again” and “ Ernest goes to school”. He was a very kind person and amazing actor he would just slip into doing Shakespeare and it was truly amazing performance. Sadly, he died way too young.
Very cool my friend. Thanks for sharing.
I'm nosey, what was your job?
What did you do on those films?
That man was a national treasure. The Christmas movie alone proved that.
"Air Brakes, hehehehehe" best line of that movie!
Ernest P. Worell : Hey! Listen, I gotta get these reindeer down to the children's museumm, like, five minutes ago, you know what I mean?
Chuck : Elms?
Ernest P. Worell : No. Ernest.
Chuck : Your name ain't Elms?
Ernest P. Worell : No. Ernest.
Chuck : We're holding these reindeer for a guy named "Helper Elms". Now, we've got some REAL good questions, and he'd better have some REAL good answers.
Ernest P. Worell : Look, it's a long story, but before I tell you, let me ask you something. Do you believe in Santa Claus?
Chuck : [eyes the flying reindeer on the ceiling] Somehow... I knew this question was going to come up.
I like ernest goes to jail and the on the jury bored at the hearing and bites into the pen. There is ink all over his face then he starts chewing on the paper. Then everyone looks at him . 🤣😂🤣😂
Scared stupid was the best
@@robertstone9988 No it wasn't. That Christmas movie was a masterpiece.
I was a lonely child. Earnest was always talking directly to me. Love him forever.
Doubt that
Same here. I always wondered if they really had to be sneaky to do his commercials around Nashville without letting his fans, see him. We used to think we loved him the most in the south, but no, folks all over loved and respected this man. Great feller. Lots of bad times were made better for me thanks to Mr. Varney. Still are. God bless you and yours.
Same
I felt like he was talking to me too! Thanks for sharing your memory.
I grew up in the town Jim lived in. As you would expect, everyone knew Jim. But it wasn't just the terminally ill kids that got to meet Ernest in person, if the local school had a public event, Jim might be there dressed as Ernest and swamped with kids and parents around him. To us yes he was Ernest but he was also just Jim. Even today, those of us that know, are proud to say that this is where home was for Jim Varney.
What town is that? Just wondering
My family still says "know what i mean, Vern?" on occasion. One of those great phrases that just don't die.
I’ve used it many times too!
Same!
im guessing you live in the midwest?
Don’t let it! I say it to my son every time I’m teaching him how to fix something.
@@OhioTruPatriot yep! California born but living in Oklahoma.
Earnest scared stupid and Earnest saves Christmas are my favorite Ernest films!
Earnest goes to prison is the all time best. Scared stupid was great to though.
And Ernest goes to camp was good too....man the memories I’m getting old lol I got an Ernest dvd collection in the living room.....I don’t even own a DVD player anymore........
I grew up during Earnest and I love both of those. My girls (adults now) quote Earnest Scared Stupid.
Ernest Scared Stupid is a GREAT movie. I'm a fan of like 95% of Varney movies though. A lot of my childhood.
I fcking loved earnest scares stupid!
I was born in 82 so naturally Ernest was a huge part of my childhood. I can still watch those movies that I have seen hundreds of times and laugh my butt off and get the same happy emotions I had when I was a kid. It's kind of hard to pick a favorite movie but Ernest Goes to Camp was amazing and I really enjoyed Ernest Goes to Jail also. Excellent video I'm glad you covered this! This video brought back so many fond childhood memories.
I just watched Ernest saves Christmas couple weeks ago and I’m telling you what his rendition of a “oh Christmas tree” is a classic.
I don't understand why these movies failed and get destroyed by critics and even the audience?
I was also born in 82 and Ernest goes to camp and jail are also my two favorites.
I was born in 80. I have Camp, Christmas, Jail, and Scared Stupid all on DVD and still watch them all the time. ❤
Ernest Scared Stupid is and will always be my all-time favorite. I remember watching it over and over as a kid. I mean I still watch it to this day. I remember my sister bought it for me as a Christmas gift bc she knew how much it meant to me. Idk Such a shame we lost such an amazing talent so early.....
Same dude that’s a classic
That one was my favorite too
Well said, thank you!
Lol miak instead of milk. 😂😂

I met Jim Varney in 1993. You was one of the most well-spoken men I have ever met and just from talking to him I can fully understand that he was one of the gentlest men on the planet and he was a true gentleman and only wanted to make people laugh because he knew laughter true laughter could solve most of the world's problems. I love you Jim Varney God Rest Your Soul.😢
Ernest Goes To Jail I watched my moms friends husband 1 of my favorite people John who was about 50-60 at the time cry watching it it was so funny my Grandpa used to really laugh Ernest Goes To Jail is 1 of the funniest movies of all time.

Jim Varney was a huge, huge part of my youth. I’ll never forget seeing Ernest saves Christmas in the theater with my family. I can still hear my dad laugh at the “air brakes” gag to this day.
Never met him, but spending some time learning about him was worth every moment. Great entertainer, great person
Honestly I didnt know alot about his earlier works so it was interesting to learn more about him. But I'll admit even from what bits i did know i could tell he was a good guy.
I still get teary eyed anytime I see Jim. He was such a blessing to this world.
Jim was a special human. Deserves a comedy award.
* I'll never forget my dad being mad for me renting an Ernest movie instead of a tough guy karate movie, like my brother, him, and I normally did on weekends. My brother gave me a hard time too, well I remember feeling about 2 inches tall for being a little wimp. Half hour in and they were both laughing into tears from Jim's comedy and I felt like we found a new thing to bond over. Pretty soon we watched them all together. Rip Jim and pop's.
American culture is very toxic...srry bro... Srry that you cannot just have unique ideas or taste in music and movies without getting attacked and I'm sure that it was both awkward and a mind-fuck sitting there (eventually) bonding over the very thing you were attacked for but glad it worked out
This is dope and feels like Americana 😂 Rip to your pops and Jim! And my dad who’s name was also jim.

Seeing this brought back some good memories of watching him with my father. Rest in peace Jim. You are a legend.
I have fond memories of Jim Varney in films like Ernest scared stupid. His performances brought me comfort during difficult times in my childhood being without a father. I plan on sharing his movies with my children and am grateful for all the happiness he brought to kids worldwide. Thank you, Jim. You left the world too soon.
Everybody remembers him for his role as Ernest, but my favorite movie of his was seeing him as Uncle Jed in "the Beverly Hillbillies" movie. He nailed it, and I laughed for days! Nobody else could have done justice to the original the way he did. What a treasure. May he RIP.
This was my favorite as well. I love Sam Elliot but he would never have been able to pull that role off the way Jim did. It showed a side of his acting that not a lot of people were familiar with. Yeah, it was comedic but there were some serious moments as well. I think my favorite scene in the movie was when he was dancing with Lea Thompson (Laura the Gold Digger). I don't even know why, it just was such an in the moment feel good scene....
I loved it
Yeah he was perfectly casted.
Great movie
A punishment? OH happiness

I ran into him as a kid in a store and was totally star struck, he did a few Ernest lines for me and joked around even though I was likely being a annoying kid. Great guy
They never get old. They always stay new. Those three little words. “Please”, and “thank you”.
That’s just a good-natured riff that he threw out in one of his movies. I never forgot it though.

I just happened to come across this video. Thank you for doing such a great job honoring the late Jim Varney . If you lived during the 80’s and 90’s and watched television or even passed by one occasionally you would know who he is and if you didn’t you knew who Ernest P Worrel was! It’s too bad he got type cast and so many just didn’t realize the true genius he was. It’s almost the same as Sysvester Stallone with Rocky, when he’s in Philadelphia and many other places people know him as Rocky. Not always a bad thing , unfortunately they are so talented in transforming themselves into a different person, that people believe that’s who they are, their acting talents are so good they even fool people trained to detect if someone is lying or not. He played a great roll in the Beverly Hillbillies, really capturing Jed Clampett, an iconic roll originally played by Buddy Epsen . Thank you for the great video! The world sure could use some more great people like Jim Varney , a heat of gold and a beautiful Highly intelligent mind to go with it!! Take care
