James Albert Varney, Jr. was born in Lexington, Kentucky, to Nancy Louise (Howard) and James Albert Varney, Sr. He became interested in theater as a teenager, winning state titles in drama competitions while a student at Lafayette High School in Lexington, Kentucky. At age 15 he played Ebeneezer Scrooge in a local children's theater production of "A Christmas Carol", and by 17 was performing professionally in nightclubs and coffee houses. He chose Nashville rather than New York or Los Angeles as a place to pursue his acting career and, with advertising executive John R. Cherry III, turned "Ernest P. Worrell" into a cash cow, making commercials for clients ranging from soft drinks to food stores and, eventually, Disney. Even though Ernest's catchphrase "KnowhutImean?" became a national craze almost immediately, Jim worked in TV and film for more than a decade before his famous alter-ego hit the big screen in Ernest Goes to Camp (1987).
Building on the successful performance of the first two Ernest movies, Varney made three more with Disney; five others were released independently, largely for television markets. The series eventually included Ernest Goes to Jail (1990), Ernest Rides Again (1993), Ernest Goes to School (1994) and Ernest in the Army (1998).
Varney's first film in a lead role other than Ernest was the 1993 big-screen version of the comedy TV series Beverly Hillbillies, in which he played Jed Clampett. He also lent his distinctive voice to the character of Slinky Dog in the blockbuster animated features Toy Story (1995) and Toy Story 2 (1999).
In 1998, Varney was diagnosed with lung cancer. He subsequently underwent surgery to remove most of his right lung, followed by radiation treatments. Varney publicly disclosed his battle with cancer in 1999, but continued to work, filming his last project, Daddy and Them (2001), starring and directed by Billy Bob Thornton. He died on February 10, 2000, in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 50.
He was buried in Lexington Cemetery in Lexington, Kentucky. - Zábava
Thx Scott for all your hard work resulting in great vids. I just donated to your pay pal.
Thank you so much Carol! That is very, very appreciated. Every dollar from PayPal and Patreon goes directly to the massive travel expenses. You are so sweet thank you.
@@SCOTTONTAPEI have paypal I need to figure out how to use it so I can send you a couple hundred dollars. Sorry Im a dork to some stuff but will figure it out to help bc I love your videos.
@@Bamabchgrlyou are so sweet thank you Bobbie! So generous and so appreciated. Due to a CZcams mix up they are giving any earnings from this video to the music channel I used which is COPYRIGHT FREE lol. I’m fighting it of course but the channel I used is not responding. It’s very disappointing.
So thank you so much !
@@SCOTTONTAPE I love your videos so its all good. I stand by I want to go to LA with you.. its my dream vacation.
❤🤘Wonderful video..He was amazing... Thank you for sharing this with us all.
Thank you for keeping my cousin's memory alive. I follow your channel and always wanted you to do something on Jim. I have more memories of him before he became famous...but he definitely was the same off or on screen. Definitely an original in every way imaginable.
Aww thank you I always love hearing from family
Your cousin was a good person. I’m so glad that he’s being remembered.
From all accounts he wasn’t an arrogant guy, which is refreshingly nice to hear.
That's awesome... he is definitely one of my favorite characters growing up!! Always wanted to meet him.. seemed like a Kool wild n Krazy guy 😂😂 RIP TO YOUR COUSIN HE WAS THE BEST!!!
😞❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏
People don’t realize how truly intelligent and a great person he truly was.
I remember how popular he was in the many commercials he was in before the movies. I was shocked and saddened when he passed. Rest In Peace, Jim Varney.
Dairy Fresh Milk for one!
Same here. Definitely a premature death. 😢
Yes I agree sad Jim Varney passed away,a great actor and comedian
I live here in White House Tn and I got the pleasure of meeting Jim several times before he died!! He was always a big part of our community and was one of the nicest and funniest people you could ever meet. He was the same in real life as the character he played, and he may be gone but he will never be forgotten!!!
RIP Jim Varney thank you for entertaining us for as long as you could.❤
Thank you for watching my dear Jana
Exactly
He was an Epstein pedo.
My mother owned a restaurant in Ridgetop called Granny's Kitchen back in the late 80s and Jim would always stop by when he was in the area and get him some of my mom's home made corn dogs. as a matter of fact, i still have a picture of him, hugged up to a waitress holding up one of the corn dogs.. i also remeber going to the cinema when we had one here in Springfield to watch Ernest Goes to Camp. Jim was a good ol boy and we were saddened to hear when he passed. Scott, wished i known you were in town, i would have loved to have met you. Keep the good stuff coming!
Hopefully next time! Thank you for sharing that story!
@@SCOTTONTAPE would love for you to do a video/story of Shannon Hoon and Layne Staley in the future. i loved these guys growing up and was devastated when they each died. Shannon passed 2 days before my 17th birthday. Layne's final few moths were also sad from what i've read. Thank you for all that you do and the awesome content you give!
@@brian_keith thank you Bunny, search my channel you will find videos on both men. 😊
Used to watch Ernest with my dad on VHS in the 80s and 90s. Considering I grew up in the Midwest, we also saw all of his commercials. Good times. Such nostalgia. Thanks, Scott.
Great video!!! I still watch Ernest scared stupid every Halloween!!!
I watch it every Halloween too! He was so funny.
I liked Jim Varney a great deal, and still watch "Ernest Saves Christmas" every year and remember him fondly. A legacy of kindness is a legacy indeed.
That's definitely 1 of the great classic Christmas movies that are kind of a tradition to watch in my family.
Me and my sister loved that movie
“I like lots and lots of butter on mine don’t you? Lots of butter.” I watch it almost every year. ❤️❤️ Always Zorz.
@@ZorzGaming Me too. I took my son to see it in the theater the year it was released, and thought that the man who played Santa Claus was delightful. My parents who are both gone now really enjoyed watching this every year and I would bake Oatmeal cookies for my Dad to have while he watched with the "baby," who is now 18 and looks forward to watching it with her boyfriend's grandparents who are from Taiwan. She said that the granddad has a great sense of humor and thinks he will love it. She is going to bake cookies for him.🥰
It's great to see that someone else is "one with the Yule." Know what I mean?
Visited his grave and made a video/tribute on my CZcams channel while on vacation driving over 2,000 miles. Couldn't believe I was there and visiting the comedy legend himself, still hard to believe that it's been 23 years since he's been gone and he's truly missed to this day. RIP Jim thank you for all the laughs and memories!
It’s a lot of miles doing a channel am I right?
@@SCOTTONTAPE I traveled from Iowa to Chicago, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and back up through St Louis. Saw alot of amazing things/places along the way including Michael Jackson's childhood home, The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame and many famous Celebrities Graves in those states. Love traveling the opening road and seeing and doing every experience possible
@SCOTT ON TAPE - Your Pop Culture Tour Guide It is and I am greatful for every moment your out traveling. I can't travel any more. I used to, thousands of miles yearly...showing dogs. Thank you for everything, Scott!
The axx😅😅😅😅
Ohhh! I miss Jim Varney. Love all his movies and commercials.
I grew up watching Earnest, I bought a DVD of one of his movies for my son. R.I P Jim V!
My Condolence ..
@@TyhlerNovac I should have worded that better. I meant R.I.P to Jim Varney. But thank you❤️
Great actor and comedian.
May he continue to rest in eternal peace.
Oh Scott, what,a way to bring a tear. Love Jim and miss his humor and him so much. My daughter and I talk about him sometimes. Thank you for taking us here to celebrate Jim!
James/Jim (Ernest) was a blessing to a lot of children living in sad homes.❤ Thank you
I wish that they would show more "Ernest" movies on TV.
One of the things I admired about Jim is even though he was a chain smoker he never smoked around women and children, and even when he was sick battling cancer he would still.visit the children's hospitals dressed up as Ernest and Visit the kids and their families. Unfortunately he never had any kids of his own but he did have a nephew who he treated as his own and his nephew a few years back wrote a book about Jim and went on a few podcasts and just said nothing but great things about Jim and how he changed the face of culture as we know it.
I noticed someone had placed a smokeless cigarette on his grave. They didn't come out until like 2009. I would like to think someone put that there wishing he could have tried one and lived longer. ❤
My sister went to school with Jim, and I was always a huge fan of his....still am. One of the most underrated talents of the 20th century. Doctor Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam!
R.I.P Jim Varney. Thank you for all you've given us. So missed and loved by so many until this day. May his legacy keep living on.🕊💐 Thank Scott for all the work you put in. Love your content.
Wow He was just 50 when he passed!!! (thought he was way older) ..He brought a smile to the world when on screen and no doubt left his mark on the world. RIP
I was and still am one of Jim Varney's biggest fans, and he passed two days before my 40th birthday, I can't help saying that was the saddest birthday of my life. Jim made this world a little less troubled by making people happy and laugh. Wish he was still here, happy, healthy and loved. He is still loved, and so missed.
Oh my this man made all of us so happy and laugh so hard. Broke my heart when he passed away. Such a huge part of my childhood involved watching him. RIP Jim
Glad you're covering him. We had several things in common. He was a talented stage actor who got typecast and embraced it. He tried to avoid smoking around kids. He's buried in Lexington just north of me. He performed in Danville where my mother lives. And, I used to live in Nashville just south of him.
"Ernest Saves Christmas" was my favorite of his films. Silly, funny, heartwarming. Classic Ernest!
I was at Twitty City, Conway Twitty's estate, for one of its annual open to the public Christmas celebrations as a kid & in one of the rooms we walked by was Jim Varney & Tom T. Hall playing piano & singing Christmas carols. It was before "Beverly Hillbillies", but I'm not sure how many movies he'd done by then? He was mostly known in Nashville as Earnest from his Purity Dairy commercials. He wasn't in character of course, but he was really nice & they both gave me an autograph.
✌🌎❤
I lived in Hendersonville and never made it up to White House but I never saw Jim Varney around. I remember all of the commercials on Channel 5, I think. He seemed so kind and so talented. He is missed so much.
@@sfs1167 Don't know if you remember, friend, but right around time he hit it big he did a tv special with several different skits, mostly him playing main characters? May have been on CMT if not primetime? If never saw it, it showed his range of comedic talent like nothing else he did as far as I know. Should still be on here if interested to see him at his creative best. I just remember "Sketti! Sketti, daddy!"
✌️😅
Jim Varney was such a huge inspiration to me in the 80s-90s. Watched most of his films and watched all of his episodes of "Hey Vern! It's Ernest!". The world is missing that man dearly.
Aww, I forgot all about Ernest until you reminded me about him with your video. Thanks for bringing a great person like him back to life for all of us, Scott. What a beautiful video this is. It's so easy to forget over time about actors that once gave us so much laughter and joy. I'm so glad there's you out there to remind us of them. What a gorgeous cemetery and a serene place to be laid to rest. I have heard of Whitehouse Tennessee, and I love that town! RIP Ernest. You are never to be forgotten anymore.
From Kentucky just like me!!!
You know what I mean Verne???
I would have loved to sit with Jim and Robin. Rest in Power Jim
Nicely done Scott. You are always so respectful. Jim was such a great comedian,,,,,,,love the song you played "So Long My Friend" RIP "Ernest"🖤💔🙏
Oh man this man Varney was better then 90% of anything after 97
This tribute made me cry. I adored Jim. He was a regular on our TV both for me and for my daughters as they grew up. Whenever I heard that he was performing on a TV show, we would always sit down together and laugh at his crazy antics as Ernest. I even bought the entire series of the "Hey Vern! It's Ernest!" TV show and all of his films. Loved him. R.I.H.P. Jim. You are missed.
He was so hilarious. I was so sad when he passed so young. Thank you Scott. This was a wonderful way to remember Jim Varney.
🕊️🙏❤️
BTW, what a beautiful song..
I agree I love this song !
I agree, beautiful song ❤🎶, & Jim is a funny & great actor❤
He was all over tv in north GA in the mid to late 80s too. He was naturally a funny person without using profanity. Hated he died before his time.
He was in commercials all over
Thank you for everything you do for these videos. Jim was my childhood. I would rent Ernest scared stupid and goes to camp almost every weekend with the movie 3ninjas lol
Every year in middle school (uk) at Christmas my school would have last day before Xmas with no classes just doing Xmas stuff and after dinner they roll out the tv/vcr trolley and watch an Xmas movie and one year it was earnest saves Christmas we'd all get a free twix and some cola was a awesome, first time ild seen anything of Jim varneys.
Awwww he passed on my birthday. Didn't realize it's been that long since he's been gone. That clip of him and Robin Williams hit a little harder. May they both be at peace.
My dad went to school with Jim varney in Kentucky. Yeah great video
My dad is from Pikeville he grew up with them
Hey Vern!!! Loved Jim Varney! 👍❤️❤️🙏🦋
Great job. I used to watch his weekly show I think on Saturdays. Great actor who does not get the credit he deserves. He was a funny guy.
Jim was an absolute legend. I remember seeing his bits on TV butt Ernest Goes to Camp was the film that truly made me a young fan. I bet I wore that VHS tape out. I remember seeing Scared Stupid in the theater and loved it as well. Dang, so many memories. Thanks, as always, for this.
Very surprised at such a modest house. 12 million net worth when he died. He is missed no doubt.
Omg!!! He is my childhood... I love him so much... Such a great actor... You are deff missed Sir Ernest Peworl... 💖💖
I remember when the news broke of his passing. Dang I can't believe it's been 23 years. Jim Varney was legend. He created a character that appealed to everyone. I still enjoy the Ernest movies. RIP
Oh….my….goodness! I used to quote Jim all the time as a kid…and kinda still do lmao! “I sure hope you’re from Keebler!” 😂Scott, this is outstanding! Thank you for this! ❤❤❤
Scott you did a great job. Jim Barney was a huge part of my childhood.. Thank you so much. 🥰❤️🔥
A video Adam the Woo would be proud of. How can you not love Jim Varney and the character Ernest
Thank You so Much Scott ❤
Sad But Good Video - Love The Gravel Road -- Looks So Peaceful - RIP ... Jim -- Loved Your Commercials
It seemed as though he remained a Southern gentleman through his years of fame. His movies brought my family together, as going to see them at the cinema is among my favorite memories. We all had a blast, especially watching Ernest Saves Christmas. I’m not sure I’ve seen my dad laugh that hard since. He’s definitely missed.
Growing up my folks were poor so I didn't have much but Jim gave me so many great memories as both Earnest and as Jed Clampett in his movies. Thanks for the memories ❤❤
Jim Varney was a great actor. I loved everything that he did. Thank you for sharing your visit with him.
I have a couple of dvds of Ernest, Rip Jim Varney 🙏 🕊
Best comedian/actor to ever come out of Kentucky..watched his films growing up as a child and i have introduced all 3 of my children to him and they love him
Right before "Ernest Goes to Jail" came out, he came to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children and visited with many of us in-patients. He was so kind and soft spoken, brought chocolate chip cookies, took pictures with us and signed movie posters. I was a huge fan prior to that experience and meeting him made my childhood! Thankful for the experience.
8:27 It’s hard to believe that both Jim & Robbin Williams are both gone, they both made me laugh so hard. RIP to the both of them, they deserve it.
Country Livin' Vern Know Whata Mean Vern
I raised my kids on his movies, and my 2nd son out four kids absolutely loved Ernest, that I bought all Ernest’s movies for him.
Jim Varney has a really beautiful grave stone in such a nice cemetery. His movies and commercials are unforgettable. He definitely had a talent for comedy and acting. Thank you for taking your viewers Jim grave and house.
Gotta love Jim aka Ernest, i grew up on his movies and when my nieces where little they watched and loved him
Great video Scott really enjoyed it Jim varney was great here in the UK he was very popular rest in peace Jim varney from Carl in the UK 👍
Circa 1998, when Varney first learned of his cancer, I heard that when he found out from his doctor that he had cancer, he reached into his pocket, pulled out his cigarettes, and threw them in the wastebasket. He was visibly shaking and was just staring at the pack of cigarettes for a minute, almost in disbelief. He never smoked another cigarette again.
I don't remember where I heard that, and I was very young at the time, but it's something that has always stuck with me. I think one of the reasons was because Ernest P. Worrell was one of the first (if not the very first) childhood celebrity that I watched all the time, that had passed away.
Hi Scott awesome video ❤ Jim varney was absolutely the best at doing commercial's nobody was better as and he was a absolutely brilliant Actor he will always be one of my favorites and he is truly missed Rip Jim varney.
So many great people have been taken away too early by cigarettes. In he's last months Jim Varney said it in interviews it was he's own fault and warn others to give up or not start smoking. Jim Varney said he had many more years to give in entertaining others taken away from him by cancer. He said making people happy was he's greatest joy in life and he's greatest reward. R.I.P. Jim Varney you were one of the nicest guys on earth.
It was good remembering him. Thank you scott
Awww😭😭 I remember his movies when I was a little girl. This is sad....BEAUTIFUL song, Scott‼️‼️

What a sweet way to honor such a wonderful person. I miss Jim Virney so much he could make you laugh when you were down. Thank you Scoot. RIP Jim
Brings back memories of my childhood. I grew up watching the Ernest films and even as an adult they still make me laugh. He was a one of a kind comic!
scared stupid was my all time favorite ernest film. RIP Jim Varney
R.I.P. Ernest, A.K.A. Jim Varney. He was popular before social media. True pioneer.
It doesn't seem that long ago that we lost him. Sometimes it feels like only yesterday when he passed.
I can still see his face and hear the sound of his voice from time to time when I stop to think about him.
He was magic. I don't say this about everyone I write about. He made me laugh. His smile and his humor got me through some really tough times.
I'm not a very religious person. I do appreciate the sentiment on the front of his tombstone. It shows his sensitive nature for children.
Thanks for sharing this video with us.
Rest in Paradise Jim Varney, you helped make the world a happier place. 🌈🕊️💖
Great actor. Thank you Scott for sharing this video. May Jim rest in peace 💞

Jim Varney .
He was in commercials and also movies. Rip Jim.
You were a great actor and comedian.📽️🎬🎭📼
Jim Varney is the best. I'm sure he's still making many smiles in Heaven. I love him and miss him. God bless always Scott and thank you very much for this.
Scott what about Nate Dogg's Grave in Long Beach and Lou Rawls Grave in Hollywood Hills & Teddy Pendergrass Grave & accident location on lincoln dr germantown section of philadelphia
Jim was such a unique and memorable character. He was featured in commercials for Cerritos Auto Square here in Southern California, and he was the perfect choice to play Jed Clampett in The Beverly Hillbillies movie. It's always hard for an actor to step into a role made famous by another, but I think Jim played Jed as impressively in the movie as Buddy Ebsen did in the TV series. It was sad that Jim passed at a relatively young age. Another awesome video, Scott.
Oh than you Scott! I loved Ernest.
Thank you for sharing. Growing up I loved watching anything Jim was in. I only live about 30 minutes from Lexington so i will make my way one day soon to pay my respects as well to a legend.
