He's the youngest captain in NHL history, an extraordinary talent with unparalleled speed, a five time Art Ross Trophy winner, and the cornerstone of the Edmonton Oilers. So, how good is Conor McDavid, actually?
Born on January 13, 1997, in the small town of Richmond Hill, Ontario, Conor McDavid's journey began. His parents, Kelly and Brian McDavid, played a crucial role in his early exposure to hockey. Though his family was not deeply involved in professional hockey, they held a deep love for the game, a passion that they instilled in young Conor. At the age of three, McDavid was already mastering his balance on skates. By four, he was playing hockey, showcasing an immediate natural talent for the game. - Sport
I have been watching NHL games since 1975. I have watched thousands and thousands of games. I have never seen anyone like Mcdavid. Gretzky is the man, the GOAT (right now) but McDavid may end up being right up there, he is the most skilled player I have ever seen. No one is close.
I’ve been watching since 06 & I must say, Mcdavid brings an element to the game that no other player brings. They talk about his speed, but his agility is out of this world. He has very high Iq even when in his rookie year. I’m can see him getting 5 rings.
@spectralflop823 with what team😂 certainly the oilers won't be getting 5 rings anytime soon lmao
@@cashvolpe4775 why not? On paper that team is literally The Most stacked team in the nhl. It’s literally an all star team, I can see them doing what Stl did in 2019 & winning it all. That’ll give ‘em more confidence to do a back to back cup run
@@cashvolpe4775cups are irrelevant when talking about how good a player is. Pat Maroon has more cups than some hall of famers, are you saying fat pat is that good? Get fkn real. Harts and Ted Lindsays speak more to how talented someone is.
Only watching hockey since early 90s. When I watched Jagr, Sakic, Bure, Foresberg, Datsyuk, I was so impressed at their ability to score pts.
McDavid is the only player I've seen when they have a 2 pt night, i think its a bad night. He's so good it feels like he should have 5-7 pts a night. When he only achieves what other greats accomplish, I'm disappointed. I'm spoiled.
Edmontonian here.
As an avid hockey watcher, I love seeing McDavid get these goals.
It’s just so crazy to see that we’ve had some of the best hockey players ever, and seeing some of McDavids shots just blow my mind.
Just assessing him on hockey skills alone, he is without peer. It is a pleasure to watch his skills on display and he doesn't disappoint.
I’ve seen peewee hockey players at local pond who are better than him. I’m pretty sure the U8 Moscow C team could beat the oilers.
The most gifted human to ever put on a pair of skates
totally agree with Orr a close second
Definitely a generational talent! Hopefully he wins a cup.
@@gordonpepper1400mario is 1
Meh, Crosby is every single bit as talented.. not as fast no but he's a winner so what would u want out of your captain?
McDavid won his 5 Art Ross by an average of 14 points each. Jagr won his 5 by an average of 7 points. Espo won his 5 by an average of 19 points. Howe won his 6 by an average of 14 points. Mario won his 6 by an average of 16 points. Wayne won his 10 Art Ross trophies by an average of 52 points. I think it's obvious.
I love mini documentaries like this. There’s tons of docs like this on basketball but not much on hockey 🎉
Glad you like it! I have a bunch more on the way :D
Like Gretzky, there's always a supporting father making sure greatness is made behind the superstar talent
So true!
Like a lot of old heads I've watched hockey for a long time and I've never seen a player like him. He's able to think as fast as he can move his body and we've never witnessed it
I recently have been reading a book called The McDavid effect and every time I open and close the book I am always left inspired and I don´t even watch hockey!
Hard to imagine anyone being any better
He’s good enough to be the best player on the planet.wont really know how good he is till his career is over ,but at this stage he’s the best player in the world👍🏻
Do you see him sticking with the oilers when hes an unrestrictred free agent? Or do you think he will end up with a different team
@@TheHockeyVault the way the oilers brought in Jackson May keep him in Oiler silks for another 5-7 years.
If they can win the cup this year or next he definitely won’t be going anywhere..
@@forfuxakes6814 Definitely, but if they cant, Im afraid Canada might lose another star player ahaha
only two years in his career have less the 100 points. 1 was his rookie year. 2 was the year the world stood still because of covid. and in both cases had he been able to play the entire season on both cases i don't think he would have a single season under 100 points.
Think about Mario lemieux too..
@@dana102083 tf does he have to do with this comment lmao
He was only on pace to score 87 points in his rookie season if he played a full 82 game schedule so it's very unlikely. He played 45 games at 1.066 ppg. He would have needed to play the remaining 37 games at 1.405 ppg which he obviously didn't have in him that season going by the games he did play.
@dannycarlow8204 there is no way to know he wouldnt have picked up the pace he came back from an injury of course his points werent going to be up there.
@@MrCanadianhero I said it was very unlikely and no, there is no way to know but there is no evidence to think it may have happened. All we know is that before he was injured he played 13 games at .923 ppg and played 32 games after his injury at 1.125 ppg. As I said, he needed to play the other 37 games at 1.405 ppg. His best six game stretch of the season was his first six games back from injury where he scored 12 points, then he scored 5 points in the next 8 games. He scored 3 points in the last 4 games before injury, and he scored 3 points in his last 4 games of the season. All I'm saying is there is no evidence that says we would have scored 100 points so it is very unlikely to have happened. I'm just going by the reality of what actually happened.
What the fuck is this title even? The guy is a wizard full stop.
We all know this
Sid is the wizard dont get ahead of your self buddy😮💨
He ain’t that good buddy overrated ngl… ppl acting like he’s a god, never gonna break any big records. Even franchise records might not be broken but I don’t think he’s gonna stay with oilers
@@The_Earbo who gives a fuck if he breaks NHL records. They were almost all made when the average score was 8-6 😂
McDavid is the Goat no doubt. The game itself is so much harder and tougher these days compared to Gretzky era so there' s not even a competition. Gretzky was the goat of a different sport.
Hard to compare different eras. I think you can say he has the potential to be the goat of the modern era but ill let gretzky maintain hes goat status. Although, if you stuck Mcdavid back in the 90's, oh my.
I think you have things reversed. The game today is so much easier for the top players. The rules help them so much now. Even though the game is faster now, it would actually be easier for Wayne and Mario today than when they played because they would also be faster than they were plus have the advantages of the different rules. No matter if they scored more, less or equal, the game would be easier for them today. They played in the roughest era. Today it's just pussy hockey compared to back then.
@@dannycarlow8204 lol
@@m.f.1646 Then by all means explain with some facts if you dispute what I said. Good luck with that.
@@dannycarlow8204 thanks for the laugh
Honestly, with his combination of absolute peak, elite skill, talent, and hockey IQ, it's not so crazy to say he just might be the best we've ever seen on the ice. I know it's brought up a ton, but the overall talent of the League now is lightyears ahead of where it was decades ago, not to mention just how much better goalies are in general. I think the argument could be made that you could put Mcdavid literally any era of hockey and he would still completely dominate in the same way, while I'm not sure the same can be said for other legends of the game.
great video!
4:14 The Cal-durr 😅
I make fun, but I love your content. Keep up the good stuff (pssst hoping for some Stutzle love one day)
Thanks, man, appreciate it! Sometimes I miss things when I review everything ahah, trying to improve with every video :D
he is without a doubt the undeniable goat of modern era hockey. genuinely dont believe we'll see another like him
yeah yeah. he doesnt have the points, goals or assists, or even silverware of the greats but the way he plays the game and sees the ice is second to none
He's definetely changed the way the game is played, thats for sure. Excited to if he will get a cup with the oilers or leave to another franchise when he becomes an unrestricted free agent in the 2026 season
I grew up watching Gretzky, this kid is pretty good too.
He's great and special and rare and ahead of his time. But 66 wouldn't get denied of an Art Ross trophy against players like Kucherov or MacKinnon in his prime. Nothing against those guys though, they're amazing. 66 and 68 had stats like 97 at the height of the dead puck era, just for comparison's sake. And no that wasn't when dinosaurs roamed the earth
According to my research: best of all time.
He only plays 22 min a game. Lemieux 1989 season played above 30 min/game. Same for Gretzky during the 80's.
Hard to compare different eras. Don't think he will touch goat status until he wins a cup though. It will be interesting to see if he stays with the Oilers when he becomes an unrestricted free agenet
@@TheHockeyVault Thing is I just looked at scoring rate adjusted for ice time and era. Also you could adjust if for cap hit aswell. Just imagine McDavid having a coffee type player like Eric Karlsson on D.
22 mins a game doesn’t seem like a lot I don’t watch nhl is that the average now for a star player what’s the total time for a match ?
@@JOK3RC4RDx Because of the insane speed nowadays with no red line off side. Players just take explosive short shifts. Back in the 80's 2 min was common because of the slow tempo of the game. Also in the middle of the 80's the trend towards shorter shift started to occur with the "short shift game" 1 minute shifts and less began to trend around the league. Go further back than that and they didnt even have 4 lines. 3 were the standard. Everything nowadays is speed and it is the fastest the game has ever been and McDavid represents the new game perfectly. NHL is not what it used to be. Nobody not even Gretzky or Lemieux can come from the 80's and expect to have 30 minutes per game.
@@JOK3RC4RDx total time is 60 min. 22 is a lot. 20 min is most common for star players.
best regular season player
He's not human, he's a GOAT 🐐🐐
No, my goats could skate better than him. He is okay.
hes great for todays game, no hooking, slashing, cross checking. no clutching and grabbing etc. 7-8 power plays per game. if Lemieux played in todays game he would score 250 pts a year. Yzerman and Sackic would get 175-180.
The average power plays per team were 3.02 per game this season. If Mario only had 3 power plays per game for a whole season, I have no doubt he would he would quit hockey forever. How's he going to score? He never played a season in his career where the Pens had less than 4 power plays per game. I'm not sure he could score 120 points in a season like that. When McDavid scored 153 points, the Oilers had 275 power plays. When Wayne scored 215, the Oilers had 295 power plays. When Mario scored 199, the Pens had 491 power plays.
@@dannycarlow8204 lol McDavid is a pond hockey player, like matthews and marner and zegras and hughes, all pond hockey players. and their playoff success is evident of that. nhl regular season is a joke
Your dates of his contract expiring are wrong.. his current contract is until the end of the 25/26 season making him a free agent in 2027
McJesus
Nice document. But you really do not need any of these fancy cool effects, they are very distracting. WIth a good content such as this is, you do not need glitter, or just use it like a spice, just now and then.
Thank you for the feedback, after watching it again. I agree, I'll eliminate that moving forward. Thank you for the constructive criticism ❤
McDavid is also a very gritty player and a great hitter. He doesnt usually do it but only because he chooses not to. When he does hit you can tell it hurts. Hes emotional and confrontational in scrums
hope they protect him
kinda sounds like written by ai at 11:35
hes the greatest player ever
Nope
the small town of richmond hill eh... maybe more like a sector of the biggest city in the country
It's ConNor McDavid though ;)
seems like Lindros 2.0
i know that McDavid has a much smaller chance of winning the cup while playing on a Canadian Hockey team. (you cant tell me in 30 years no Canadian team could win the cup even once) but why does that mean we should still get some of the best players on the planet?
Do you think McDavid is leaving the Oilers once he's an unrestricted free agent in 2026? I would imagine money will be the ultimate deciding factor, but I can see him ending up in the states
@TheHockeyVault i think it will depend how these next to seasons go. But i also think he has built a life here and won't just want to move it. But only time will tell. (Seeing him in anything but oiler orange and blue would be weird)
Lol. Canadian fans always deflect to some “it’s rigged against Canada!” nonsense despite the fact that single teams have been created and won 3 cups between now and the most recent Canadian victory. That’s not rigging, that’s Canadian teams just being… idk, not champions.
who is McDOOGLE
I’ll draft a healthy Lemieux over McDavid in any era.
SKATE WITH EYES forward not like LINDROS - no dis intended
He’s not good. He’s great.

Just wait until Connor Bedard get in the league

Eh, he’s okay. Nothing to write home about.
66 is the best to ever play the game

If he was paired with Amazing Defenceman like Orr/Esposito , Robinson/Lafleur , Potvin/Bossy , Coffey/Gretzky . Butt he has Dry Saddle.

@@lockoutslayer😂
Not very
McDavid is not a winner yet. Many greats had to learn to sacrifice offense to win. Last game goalie out the opposition turned it over deep. 4 Oilers were quickly leaving the zone for the empty net. They then turned the puck over. Time to play it safe and learn a style that wins in April. 97 and 29 cannot win playing 25 mins a night.
Lemieux was better
“How good is mcdavid actually”
Well he’s not good enough to win a cup so he must not be to good
Gretzky and Lemieux were infinitely superior. Hockey isn't just about skills, otherwise Alex Kovalev would have been a God. Young people don't understand the concept of hockey IQ, the sense of anticipation and the overall vision of the game. The gap between Gretzky and his peers was infinitely greater than that of McDavid with his contemporaries.
Yeah current market is way tougher to get into and be at top of the pack. I've watched Mario, Gretzky and mcdavid and those round out top 3..but I'm not crazy enough to think you can actually compare them when it's impossible. All we can agree on is Mario's career was cut short.
@@dana102083 More difficult today? Imagine for a moment Gretzky with modern training methods and equipment. In hockey without hooking, without red lines and in 3 vs 3 overtime. Insane!
