Sidney has taken the NHL to another level, a lot of people watch the Pens play because of Sidney, he is one of few that has carried the NHL. There has been several great players come and go in the NHL but very few legends, Sidney will be a legend when his playing days are over. Pittsburgh was very lucky to have won the draft lottery to be able to pick Sidney, he save that franchise from leaving the city. New England had Brady, Chicago had Jordan, the NHL, Penguins and hockey fans have Crosby. We may never see another person and player like Sidney.
Just an amazing player both on and off the ice. As a Canadian, its hard not to look up to Sid. One of my favourite players and just an incredible hockey player overall.

I didn't think anyone would ever come close to Mario. What he overcame just to play was incredible. He saved the penguins twice,when he was drafted and when he made his comeback. His skill will never ever be matched along with his size and in my opinion would have matched Gretzky's scoring record had he not been crippled with back injuries and cancer yet was still incredible. Then his accomplishments in international play. Then he became an owner kept them in Pittsburgh. Then drafts Crosby he somehow was able to do the same is beyond mind boggling and nothing short of amazing. Had he not lost almost 2 seasons to injury his numbers would be even better. They both make everyone around them better and carried the Hope's of a city and an entire nation on their shoulders and delivered in spectacular fashion. Mind blown..

He's perfect in dirty areas, corners, in front deflecting, shielding the puck, stickhandling, shot, passing, speed, agility, strength on puck, 1 on 1's, nothing he cant do excellently.

Call me crazy but Sid and Ovi did for hockey what Magic and Bird did for the NBA. Those 2 legends got so many new fans to the game coming out of the lockout, i wint say they saved the NHL but it helped astronomically

Had Crosby not gotten hurt at the Winter Classic, we would have looked at that season the same way we look at McDavid’s 2022-23. Also want to note: Sid is currently tied for 5th all-time in playoff points with Jagr (in 28 fewer games). The only players ahead of him played with Gretzky and the Oilers in the 80s, plus Gretzky himself. Plus the gold medal, 3 Cups, 2 Conn Smythes…it’s good enough for 5th all time for me. Gretzky, Lemieux, Orr, Howe, then Crosby.
These are all great points. Very few to join the triple gold club. Not to mention how he's still doing great at this stage in his career.

As a diehard Pens fan, it's truly hard to describe Sid's legacy. Not just as a great player, but as a person. Watch the little things he does on the ice, the puck battles the small plays that set up great chances, and you truly start to appreciate his greatness. He's one of the best to ever play this great sport. I met him in 2019 and it was a thrill of a lifetime as he signed my puck . Very nice to me. Thanks for this video. Malkin should get one too as he is so underappreciated.

If you watch all the little things the other players do you'll notice they all do the little things pretty well too. When you're a professional that's all part of the job.

I have a lot of respect for Crosby, he fits the mold of the CANADIAN hockey superstar quite nicely. He's not only a great hockey player but he's a good person and not the typical sports star, with the superego to go along with it. During the 2014 Winter Olympics he was the glue that pulled that team together and although his stats don't jump off the page, he was always lurking and dangerous.
I completely agree. Probably the greatest player on and off the ice as a package. A true gentlemen and a great representation for the sport of hockey.
It’s unfortunate that he had serious injuries when he hit his exact prime. I remember Don Cherry on Coaches Corner doing his thing on Sid and screaming ‘look at this! Look at his head going back and he wasn’t even hit to the head!” That was signs of a concussion that were never picked up. He missed about 200 games which if he played those games he’d have over 650 goals and approximately 1900 points. BEAUTY! Side note…at this point in the season Crosby is leading the NHL in face off winning percentage. BEAUTY!
If he hadn't missed those games, it would be interesting to see his stats would shape up. Glad he's still performing well in the league!

Concussions don't exist... All hockey players back in the fay got their "bell rung" many times and never missed a beat... It's just now they invented this and doctors look for the symptoms is why we lose the prime and careers of these players... Damn shame and we should stop allowing doctors to give hockey advice... Stupid!

Been so awesome living in Pittsburgh my whole life and watching him since I was 11. When I was 19 I got in a serious motorcycle accident and while being in Children’s Institute for rehab, Crosby delivered 4 tickets to me. He’s a good guy on and off the ice

I've been a Penguins fan since 1990, ever since I saw Le Magnifique, Mario Lemieux. Sid had a great leader to learn from, and it is truly amazing that the Penguins have had 2 exceptional players in Lemieux and Crosby who were able to overcome severe career setbacks, and still remain dominant in the game. As for a favourite moment, I would have to say the 2010 playoffs where Sid danced around the Ottawa Senators, and setup Kirs Letang for a goal. That performance was truly magic on skates.

He scored 14 points in 5 games in that first playoff round against the Senators and including the end of the regular season he had 29 points in 10 games through that stretch (wasn't even a points streak as he was held scoreless once). I'm not sure but I think since Crosby entered the league only McDavid had a similar 10 game stretch with 31 in 11 games in 20/21, though Kucherov or MacKinnon probably came close, but not quite. I wonder if he could have kept it up a whole season and hit 150+. We'll never know. 10 games is a small sample size of course. I'm not sure he was that consistent through a whole season even in an injury-free prime like a McD or Kuch

A little back story about the 2005 draft. Craig Patrick (shown w/ Lemieux & Crosby 3:17) the Pen's general manager was given a four leaf clover by a woman who worked in the Pens organization to take with him. He also stopped at St. Patrick's Cathedral to pray. Not a religious person myself, but who knows if it was divine intervention that put Crosby in Pittsburgh.
A great story for sure, maybe it was destiny.
It was divine intervention that they got Malkin, Letang and Fleury to make Sid look better.
I really only started watching at the end of the 2022 season but growing up I always heard about Sidney Crosby and how he brought the gold back to Canada 🙂

He scored the goal but he wasn't one of the 3 best players on his team that year.
Sadly I made a detailed video about Crosby and how good he was before the concussions. CZcams blocked it so I had to delete it. I explained how on average nhl players peak in season 6 of their careers. Crosby was in his 6th year on pace for 65 goals and 130+ points in dead puck era. He also just came off a 50 goal season the year before so Crosby was actually getting better each year at just 24 years old and in his 6th NHL season he was about to hit a new level which was 50-60 goal scorer every year like Ovi except Crosby would have 120-140 points a year as well...whereas ovi just scores goals but doesn't get that many points.
Crosby started his first 6 years all on pace for 100+ points ....so he was basically a lock to get 100+ points every single year for his career.....but after the concussion in the early part of his 6th and greatest season ever, he only recorded 2 more 100 point seasons for the rest of his career ...imagine that. So we've witnessed a less than prime Crosby the rest of his career, and yet he was still the best player in the NHL who went on to win 2 more cups for a total of 3. So imagine how good he would have been without the concussions and missed nearly 2 years of NHL hockey. He'd easily finish his career with 2000+ points and probably 700+ goals. But even after his career was almost ended several times, he may still finish his career with 1800+ points! Imagine that! A diminished Crosby since 24 years old still goes on to have 1800 points in the NHL and finish top 3 all time in points. That's how good he was in his prime.

Young Sid and Malkin were a scary duo to watch. I dreaded each time my favourite teams would play them. Many nights the channel would get changed in the second period because the game was already over!

Feel blessed to have watched this man play hockey for my team my entire life. I got to witness him bring 3 cups to my hometown team. I had Sid like my father had Lemieux. I don’t think I’ll ever see another dominant player for the Pens in my lifetime. But who knows what the future holds.

To me what moment I remember the most of him? Is when he was playing vs Ottawa... Vs Spezza to be exact. That is to me the best assist of ALL times.

Crosby would of been the 2nd player in NHL history to reach 2,000 points. No doubt in my mind, if he didn’t have those injuries during his prime he might have had a real shot. So happy I was able to see him play, from a Blues fan.
Curse of a penguin i suppose. Many said the same of Lemieux vs Gretzky. If he had not had cancer and a back surgery, he could have surpassed Gretzky. Perhaps it's God's way of keeping them humble so they can stay great.

You should have also mentioned his faceoff prowess to demonstrate his commitment. When he came into the league his faceoff percentage was low and he apparently worked and worked on it and got it to mid 50s. Pure determination.
Faceoffs don't matter, at the best you can get slightly above a coin toss advantage but it doesn't matter cause you can always regain possession later... The best players are almost never the best at faceoffs so it's a wash... Focus on what matters! Improve your skating, shot and hockey situational awareness and do what other's don't care to do in the game and you will play this great game of ours for longer than most, and maybe be blessed to play on the highest level with these greats- if talent and circumstances permit!

I’m a big basketball and football fan so I’m new to Hockey and learning the players but I remember as a kid the only player I really knew/cared about in the Sport of Hockey was Sidney Crosby that’s how legendary he was he drew so much attention outside of the sport to other sports fans

If only I knew the future ... I could have gotten up on Saturday mornings and walked 500 feet over to Cole Harbour Place where the rink was and watched Sidney play hockey as a youngster.
It would have been fun to see him advancing his skills with every game.

Sidney would always been seen driving his bone stock Lincoln Navigator around town and nothing else. His Dad has a nice, high-end normal car also. I was getting my car detailed, and waxed in a shop and Sidney's and his Father's car were ahead of me.
PS: This is an older story, so of course Sidney is not driving the same vehicle now, but I know without looking that it is not a Ferrari, not while he is home.
Just so you know guys, Cole Harbour Place has 2 rinks, side by side, with a wall of course inside that facility, so if you walked over, and it was figure skating going on, you just had to open another door and there would be hockey training, or a game you could watch.
My Son was 5 when I moved next door to Cole Harbour Place, so I had full family membership there for the pool, squash, hot tub, rinks, etc., so it was common to see Sidney coming and going, I just did not know who he was back then, again ... Dam, it would have been fun to watch.

I remember in high school, my uncle gave me his penguins tickets so I took my girlfriend. They were right above where the pens came onto the ice. It was after one of the periods, I’m cheering them on going back into the locker room. Then all of a sudden my gf tells me to look to the down. Crosby was standing there with a puck in his hand. I did not even see him…he must’ve been standing there for 20 seconds before I realized…yet he stood patiently until I took the puck. Had the chance to shake his hand years later during the back to back cups. Great man

He probably has about 1700- 1800 points rn if he never got hurt long term (assuming he would get hurt but only miss a few games here and there and not play 82 games every year) so a little bit of wiggle room there. Either way as a pens fan one of my favorite players ever!! You didn’t even mention his legendary backhand shot either lol!!!

@@lucarossi9453 He only missed 170 games. Most players miss that much or more. Very few players are as durable as Yandle, Kessel or Ovechkin. Their ability to play every game is very rare.
Prime Crosby is unrivaled IMO, he had complete success in the pros and international. At a time where both where actually the best of the best. Also look at what he is doing at his age right now. I dont think anyone has been able to perform at this level at his age

Ovechkin had 90 points in 77 games at age 36. Sid had 94 points in 82 games at age 36. Ovi had a slightly higher PPG and also scored 50 goals. Never been done before by a 36 year old.

During that one year with no hockey, Sid came down to my local dek hockey rink and played in net for the Pens assistants team. He played in the game after mine, and I specifically heard him comment “nice pass” on a pass I made at the end of the game. I didn’t know it was him until after his game ended and it was revealed. Nobody knew until then - except the people in the game.
Top 5 of all time. I’ve seen him countless times…full throttle every shift every game and a threat to score at any time.

@@TheHockeyVault He's 260 goals, 2500 hits and 40 takeaways behind Ovi for his career. He's only blocked 70 more shots which isn't all that great for a centerman whose primary job unlike a winger is to block both points.

As a Bruins fan, I can confidently say he’s great. I personally love Ovechkin but Sid (no longer the kid) and his talents are undeniable

He is the greatest of his generation and top 5, all time, IMO. You asked what makes him great and sets him apart. To me, it’s his mid-core strength, his thick and muscular thighs and his big kaboose butt! Because of this, his edges are spectacular. You need a high hockey IQ and he has that too.

When I saw the title it occurred to me that there’s actually a large portion of hockey fans that are too young to of seen/remember what prime Ovi and Crosby were like.
There’s probably a lot that would be a bit mind blown if I told them for a good while Ovi was one of the fastest skaters in the league lol.

You didn't mention anything about his incredible skating skill, Crosby's edge work is unrivaled in the league. McDavid has speed but what crosby can do with Edge work it's incredible.
I watched 100s of prime Crosby games growing up. He had insane regular season numbers, but trust me, it could’ve been way more. For starters he would take pretty much any top 9 forward and turn them into 30-40 goal scorers in the lowest scoring era ever. Imagine if he actually played on a line with elite guys in his prime.
As well as eventually he learned he needed to just get through the regular season healthy. He would put in a 90-100 point season and is still over point per game to this day.
Reason being, when it’s playoff time, Crosby takes it to a new level and is basically the greatest grinder of all time while having a generational skill set and hockey IQ. I think he might be the most complete player of all time.
I could go on for many many more paragraphs of why he’s the most complete but honestly his game speaks for itself and many others share the same opinion.

its actually insane how well he is still playing.
As a flyers fan, I dreaded playing against him from 05’ to 18’, he’s still a threat today. He’s top 5 all time, he’s the complete package. Only thing McDavid has on Crosby is his speed and explosiveness, but once mcdavid hits 30’s, he won’t be able to impact the game like how Crosby did in his 30’s.
What makes Sidney Crosby better than Jaromir Jagr? I watched both play from the beginning of both careers. Jagr was by far the better player on the ice. Jagr was almost as good as Lemieux and Lemieux was pretty much the best player ever. Sid's not close to Lemieux.

I don't really care if anybody is actually better than him. He's the GOAT to me. I grew up watching him, and he's from a community very close to my own (like 15-20 mins close). He's inspired me more than any other athlete ever has, and it isn't even close.
