Same here. I once called Guy William's home hoping to get him to hook me up with Angela Cartwright. I was all of 10 years old and used a pay phone in the basement of the school. Somehow, I convinced the operator to place the long distance call from Pa. to Calif. I didn't know anything about the time difference, though, so it was about 3 or 4 a.m. there. A butler or somebody answered, but he said "It's 3 a.m. Mr. Williams can't be disturbed." And that was that. I think I had to feed something like five or six bucks (in change) into the phone. So much for my love life back then, eh?

Now people say Irwin Allen's show go downhill and become nothing but kiddie shows, I tend to digress, look at voyage to the bottom of the sea, the time tunnel and land of the giants, many episodes where very mature and did interesting episodes. The only reason this one show went into a ridiculous state is due to Jonathan Harris who over hammed and made a mockery of what could have been a much better show.

Guy Williams was deeply resentful that in the final seasons of Lost in Space, his role had been reduced to little more than a walk-on, or a set-up for Bill Mumy, and Jonathan Harris. He felt pretty humiliated, and after the series folded he left the USA for Argentina where his star still shone brightly because he had been El Zorro. @@scottnichols3685 In an interview available here on CZcams, Jonathan Harris describes how he inadvertently made matters with Williams far worse.
Harris had felt very guilty over how he had essentially taken over the show, and one day he spoke to Williams about it, and apologized to him for how things had turned out.
Williams stiffened, mumbled a response and walked away.
Williams was frosty to him for the remainder of their professional association.
Harris realized too late that his well meaning words had, in Williams' view, stripped him of his last shred of dignity.
The last thing he wanted or needed was to be pitied by his "Replacement".
Harris to the end of his life regretted that mis-step, and how badly he had hurt Williams.
It seems petty how Williams was reacting, but you have to remember how HUGE he was when playing Zorro for Disney. He was a definite A-Lister who saw himself being dropped well below B-List.
That would be hard for anyone to take.
Tina Louise had the same issues with "Gilligan's Island" She was a rising star with Academy recognition on the horizon, but she was basically tricked into being an "Also" on a TV show that sunk her serious aspirations.
SHE spent decades resenting the show because it had derailed her career.

Harris' Doctor Smith was one of four well known #2's that ended up more popular than the leads in the late '60's.

Nimoy's Mr. Spock (resulting in the trope name "The Spock Effect")
      David McCallum's Ilya Kuryakin
      And
      Bruce Lee's Kato.
Williams WAS considered a TV A-lister, but at the end of three years, he had become an "Also Ran".
Van Williams, William Shatner, and Robert Vaughn didn't fall nearly as far as Guy Williams, and two of the three went on to greater careers.

It had a Styrofoam Jupiter 2 that could be opened up, cardboard cutouts of monsters, the robot, the Robinsons, etc. The best part was a battery-operated Chariot that would follow a plastic tube with a pneumatic switch to make it go different directions. It was based on the first season of LIS, when the peril was more real, the situations dire, and Dr. Smith more sinister. Watching the pilots now (there were two - one without Dr. Smith where they go off course from a meteor shower and one where Dr. Smith sabotages the robot and then gets stuck onboard when the robot smashes up the flight computer), it was actually a series with a lot of promise. I cannot watch the later seasons now.

6:40 June Lockhart and to much greater extent Guy Williams deeply resented the show's sudden shift from sci-fi adventure to space schtick. Adding Harris to the cast presented Irwin Allen with a problem, as he told Williams and Lockhart they were the leading stars. Harris said he'd accept billing as "Special Guest Star", which he retained for the entire run. Though he didn't appear on screen, there isn't much question of whatever happened to the show's composer, then known as Johnny Williams. She would be best-known and remembered, however, for her signature role of "Judy Robinson" in LOST IN SPACE (1965). ..." ------- SOURCE: " IMDb" WEBSITE --- Marta Kristen - Biography ------- For awhile MARTA KRISTEN lived in a house across the road to my old childhood neighborhood in FARMINGTON, MI (until 1959, when her and her adopted family moved to Hollywood, CA) and she played with girls in my old subdivision, including my best childhood friend's older sister and a girl that lived across from my old house. In 1959, MARTA was about 14 years old and I was about 5 years old, so I only have vague memories of seeing her. The girls that MARTA played with in my old subdivision were obviously older than I was and my best friend's older sister remembers playing with her!!! She must've attended my old ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (ALAMEDA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL in FARMINGTON, MI in the NEXT STREET north of my old subdivision --- ALAMEDA RD.). When MARTA left for HOLLYWOOD in 1959, this was a year before I started KINDERGARTEN in 1960, so MARTA probably was in Junior High School (since she is 8 years older than me), when she left to California and attended Santa Monica High School for a year. I also made a POST on this information on this CZcams comment stream. In my old subdivision, my old babysitter and oldest sister of one of my playmates ------- CAROLYN FORCHE became a famous American poet, editor, professor, translator, and human rights advocate. She has received many awards for her literary work and was one time invited to the KENNEDY compound in MASSACHUSETTS!!! Carolyn is about only 3 years older than me and I knew her very well, as I seen her a lot in my early childhood. We were both probably born in MT. CARMEL HOSPITAL (now Detroit Medical Center --- DMC) in DETROIT, MICHIGAN. (GOOGLE Search: " Carolyn Forche poet" to see photos of her.) She was an attractive woman with a kind face. MARTA KRISTEN and CAROLYN FORCHE both aged pretty well. They are both a part of my young childhood memories in FARMINGTON, MI.

I met June Lockhardt and her daughter, Anne, who was in Battalstar Galactica. I think it was 1982...they were in Texas to do publicity for the YO Ranch opening, for some reason, along with a ton of old western stars like Doug McClure, Howard Keel, etc...I thought June was very sweet and friendly, even though people who were over excited and blabbing about her career to her, or saying weird things about how she looked on and off camera, which was excruciatingly embarrassing, but she must have been used to it, since she was just at ease, no matter what. I actually took her attitude as a great example of how to meet anyone and stay calm and friendly no matter what. She was a real professional, I wish we had more time, she must have had great stories to tell!

4:22 Billy Mumy was *NOT* a "Teen" when he debuted in Lost In Space. He was 9 years old in the two pilot episodes(first version without the Robot or Dr. Smith, 2nd version with those two additions). He did not reach his teens during the run of the show as he was only 12 when the show ended.

MARTA KRISTEN was adopted by parents who lived across the street from my childhood subdivision in FARMINGTON,MI (a suburb of DETROIT, MI). This is before she left for Hollywood and became a famous space actress. She used to play with girls in my childhood neighborhood subdivision, including my best childhood friend's older sister and a girl that lived across the street from me!!! I was around 8 years old, back then, and my memories are vague about seeing her back then, but I know I must have seen her, back then. PAM DAWBER (from the TV SERIES: "MORK AND MINDY") attended NORTH FARMINGTON HIGH SCHOOL, so FARMINGTON, MI produced 2 famous space actresses!!! A cashier at a local KMART store said that I resembled the elder version of ROBIN WILLIAMS ("MORK") in my face. As a teenager, many people though that I resembled JOHN LENNON (of THE BEATLES fame). One person thought that I resembled "DATA" (BRENT SPINER) of STAR TREK FAME. At a SiFi CONFERENCE in NOVI,MI, I saw MARK GODDARD there, in person. If that's not all, my CHILDHOOD BABYSITTER (CAROLYN FORCHE) (from the same CHILDHOOD SUBDIVISION, that MARTA KRISTEN played in) became a FAMOUS AMERICAN POET, EDITOR, PROFESSOR, TRANSLATOR and HUMAN RIGHTS ADVOCATE, who has received many awards for her literary work. Carolyn was also invited to the KENNEDY compound in MASSACHUSETTS!!! GOOGLE Search: "Carolyn Forche" for information on my old childhood babysitter!!! She still looks the same, as I remember her. Yes, that's her!!! Anyway, MARTA KRISTEN is a beautiful woman and a nice person. She grew up in my old childhood neighborhood, which was very wholesome back then, and I'm still friends with most of my old neighbors from back then (the ones that are still living, anyway). My childhood best friend's mom (who also seen MARTA KRISTEN back then, since she is the mother of her daughter that played with MARTA KRISTEN) just celebrated her 100TH BIRTHDAY!!! My old childhood subdivision (in FARMINGTON,MI) was ONE BIG HAPPY FAMILY, where everyone knew each other and were the best of neighbors and friends. Yes, the GOOD OLD DAYS, were very good for me and many people back then (50s - 70's). I wish these "GOOD OLD DAYS" return soon!!! I can only hope that they do!!!

The first season was the best because it actually was more serious in it's adventure that held my attention as a kid. What would it be like if you had to depend on all your family members to survive in strange new worlds? What would those worlds be like? Once Dr. Smith morphed his evil character into a manipulative campy old man with a bad back who loves robots and young boys, I kind of lost interest. I kept hoping for it to get better, but all I got was guys dressed up as stocks of broccoli and a green woman stalking Dr Closet Case from outside the ship.😉

"Lost in Space" was one of my Favorite TV Series in it's 1st two years. It seems like the further it went along, the more Juvenile it became. I do have the entire 3rd Season on DVD, however, But the real reason is that in the 3rd Season, there was a Guest Star of My NAME -- GRANT SULLIVAN (i). He's in the IMDb. He's "I" because after he Retired, not long after his appearance in "Lost in Space" Season 3, another Actor took his Name -- GRANT SULLIVAN (II). The 2nd Grant Sullivan has had minor roles, including a significant role in a less-known movie with Kelsey Grammar.
I do have some Family cousin-connections so some of this TV Series.
My Favorite was Guy Williams. I was a Huge Fan of Guy Williams in "Zorro".
Of course, I also saw June Lockhart in "Lassie". The Original Case of TV's "Lassie" was replaced at some point with a whole new Case, including June. Yet, it was the "same" Lassie for the whole TV Series!! Amazing!! Collies don't normally live that long! The Lassie that appeared later was a Descendant of the Original TV Lassie.
