I summitted last summer. We free climbed up, which was very chill besides the crux, which is easily a V2 boulder move. Easy, but god is it frightening. We belayed down, although a 60 year old man climbed up and down with no ropes

As a resident of Central Oregon,I absolutely appreciate your amazing videos of our area. Mount Washington has seen several changes over the last decade with forest fires and climate change. McKenzie pass offers such a beautiful view of this Majestic Mountain.
I've climbed all the major peaks in western Oregon. Climbing Mt. Washington was the only time I ever felt any fear. The rock is so bad that you spend the entire climb being hyper aware of loose rock and where the other climbers are. I'm glad I did it once but I won't go back. Nice video!
@@MattCookOregon There are many variables that affect the difficulty of a climb. Team members, weather and climbers from other teams, just to name a few. I climbed Jefferson with a tight group that I knew well, including the (great?) grand daughter of one of the Mazama founders who is part woman and part mountain goat. She set the anchors while I dealt with logistics; the climb was a breeze. The traverse is not to trifle with but you'll do fine.
Once again, an outstanding combination of scenery, just enough audio, appropriate background music and those all important safely tips. A rare ability. Thank you.
Safety is a big theme here. I always heard about social media causing people to go places they shouldn't and get in trouble. So I tried to do that better.
Great job Matt! When I was last up there it was an active volcano! We had to keep climbing to out run the velociraptors! That was quite a while ago. Wonderful videography and editing!

I started hunting on the other side of the highway 8 years ago below 3 fingered Jack and I would look up in awe. I had sweaty palms just watching that video of yours. I climb 40’ ladders and get on 6 story roofs no problem, but I have a sincere distrust for ropes and will never make these climbs lol. I shared your video to a climbing buddy of mine, this mid June we will hike up Jefferson through the spine just before the traverse just to see it ourselves. My buddy can call his other friends to get someone beyond that point hahah.
When we climbed it there was a cloud deck just above notch on the north side where the technical portion begins. We took a gamble and went up. The top of the couds was about 50 feet below the summit. It was the most sureal place I have been. The summit is pretty small and it was like we were on this little tiny rock island. You could see the summits of the other peaks like islands. It was very very cool. Another cool part is that we both repelled ouf the clouds back down to another group of climbers that were debated on whether to go up or not.
Nice work. That is a cool experience. I have had that at South Sister, but that is a much wider summit to make an island in the sky. Well hopefully I get a Jefferson video out this year. Other than that I need to pick more obscure Oregon mountains, Strawberry mountain maybe.

Your narration reminds me of Marty Stouffer, a native of Arkansas my home state, who long before it was popular, photographed and documented North American wildlife. Great climb. I recently learned that the snow melt from Mt. Washington runs through miles of volcanic rock and comes out at Great Spring above Clear lake; the head waters of the McKenzie River, which provides some of the best water in the country for the Eugene area.
Thanks. Yes the water is the best I have tasted. About 2-3 years ago I put out a video on Clear Lake, it mentions this while showing a shot of Washington.

My dad climbed Mt. Washington solo without gear in 1959. We climbed it ten years ago and we used climbing gear. I can't imagine anyone climbing it unprotected. Does anyone know if maybe part of the mountain rock broke off to make the climb more difficult now compared to back in the 1950s?
Most of them you can just hike up. Join obsidians or mazamas. Or even the Oregon hikers Facebook group. Lots of opportunities to climb with people there.
@@MattCookOregon I don't have face book , I have looked at the Mazamas .problem is summer time work keeps me busy ! I have done the south sister but now with that stupid central cascade Permit system makes it difficult.
@@Tankeryanker339 the permit system is awful. I wish we the people could have more of a say in it. It is very restrictive to poor/diverse people especially. I have given them some really good suggestions to improve it but getting the government to do anything is nearly impossible. I may make a video about the permits to make an impact at some point.

I passionately hate the permit system. One good hack for experts is you can just go 100 feet off any trail and won't have to deal with people or permit checkers. Thanks for the nice comment on videos. I went around doing all the major Oregon peaks and have one left for Jefferson next year. Maybe I will do some lesser known ones like Strawberry mountain after that.

Yeah everyone is different. Some people protect the entire final part up. I do about half. Easy climbing but bad exposure, like most our mountains.
Anyone use this ''Thanks' feature? Its pretty cool! Up next is a quick cave video, then Mt Hood summit.
Another great video of something I will never do but enjoy watching someone else do. I don’t care for heights or climbing with ropes.

I have a few complaints on title already. My thinking was if you compare it to all Oregon peaks, it is top 5 which is one of the most technical.

Thats cool. No idea of recent changes. I know many consider it not all that difficult. It is just the consequence of falling that makes most rope up.

What day did you climb this? I climbed it June 25th 2022
June 18th 2022 and July 1st 2023.
