- Beacon Rock is one of the most iconic geological features in the Columbia River Gorge. The the core of an ancient volcano, it juts sharply upwards for close to 850 vertical feet. The towering basalt rock is a major draw for rock climbers. In this video from Oregon Field Guide’s archives, we visit with Jim Opdycke, who was the unofficial “mayor” of the Beacon Rock climbing community before he died in 2021.

Thank you to everyone behind this production. I'll be watching it for years. I was lucky enough to saunter all over Beacon and many other places with Jim and this documentary on the legend is such a great way to remember all the good times we had cleaning cracks, listening to old cassettes he recorded off the radio and looking for a sunny spot to chill.
These opb videos are great
“Way up there on the side of the rock, There is a man”
beautiful rock
Remember that time Oregon State Parks offered to buy Beacon Rock to protect it from being turned into a jetty? Classic
Beacon Rock is in Washington State.
Ya I know, but they didnt want it *until* the dude who owned it asked Oregon if we wanted it, then Washington got all fussy and said "Fine, we'll turn it into a park" and went off and grumbled like those little Washingtinion gremlins do
How would they buy Beacon Rock when it is another state 😂 😂
@@matthewwelsh294 Believe me, Im just as confuzed by the logistics and legality of it as you are.
But I'd happily annex a chunk out of Washington any day of the week if it were offered to me.
It could possibly happen but i doubt it. Oregon and Washington went at war with one another. Nobody killed . Why Clark County is under Maritime Marine laws. So nobody can pillage then jump in a boat and laugh
Man that guy is the best!
Beautiful
Hey Jim- I miss you buddy!
