The UK is so interesting in Eurovision. Before 2000 they were outside the top 10 only three times and one of those was in 1999 after the rule change about languages. But now since 2000 they've only been in the top 10 three times and have been near the bottom of the finals so many times now but they were never even close to the bottom before 2000
Love shine a light is still going strong in 2024- what an amazing anthem this was and still is! Definitely the best UK entry ever! Loved Gina G. and Frances Rufelle - the new seekers are legendary.
I love these type of videos. I would love you to make more of them for other countries, though it is probably a lot to handle. Alternately, can you make a video of the least successful song of each participating country? Like the 2021 entry here for UK, but for all the countries. I don't think anyone ever made such a compilation video in the fandom, while there are many "Highest placed ESC song by country" videos... Anyway thanks for this lovely channel!
The fact the bottom 10 composed by literally their very first attempt ever, and then only songs from the last third of their contest history is... quite bizarre
Your criteria for ordering throws up some interesting placings. Some of it seems a little counterintuitive to me - Bucks Fizz barely scraped their victory while Puppet on a String won by a mile for example. Still, if I could predict all the placings it wouldn't have been such a fun video to watch. Thanks for doing it!
Yeah with the tied placings they're way more open to interpretation than others but I decided to stray away from point margins as much as possible since it's so hard to compare different systems, after all they only represent how relatively clear or close a year is
@@clarinetmoonesc it probably doesn't change results all that much either so might not be worth the effort but just something that crossed my mind. I do love the effort you put into your system already, it makes me cringe seeing other lists like this based on straight rankings or points
@@clarinetmoonesc tbh i feel as though changing the criteria for ranking based on qualifiers doesn't really work for this. For comparing the big 5 to other countries it's a brilliant system, but when only comparing songs that are AQs, it can perhaps muddle the result and means a song that finished high-midtable places lower than a song that finished in the bottom 3. Functionally, from the UK's perspective, I'd say that competing against a field of 25 finalists is no different from when there were 25 songs total (or in the case of '93 and '96 when songs had to compete in a pre-qualifying round.)
@@Georgie-M that's not what actually happens though and when you only count it out of the amount of finalists, the high placers get unfairly penalised. I tried to apply the rules with principles as simple as possible that aren't based on arbitrary feelings
Why on earth can’t we just send good songs anymore, i wish we’d come out of the big 5 so the bbc would be actually willing to do well now and again fgs
The placing for 1990 should be 6th, it is just a mistype
Schrödinger's Country. They're both successful and unsuccesful at the same time if you don't check their results.
Most countries usually get a consistent mix of good and bad across all periods but the uk on the other hand...
5 wins, 16 oh-so-near finishes, and 4 Rock Bottom (see what I did there?) spots pretty much sum UK's time up in this contest.

1995 is actually a banger❤️❤️❤️and he’s handsome
Me thinking: how can an act which placed 4th be the 28th best result?
Me realizing: UK has 16 2nd places, 5 victories and some 3rd places too...

You got the Northern Ireland singers all in row!
6:56 I hear the people in charge of the sound mixing and filming of this entry are still wanted by Interpol.
Thanks for the great video. 14:06 Btw UK was 6th while Yugoslavia ended up 7th in 1990
Oh I knew I somehow hadn't managed to avoid every single mistype
10:14 Also this genius in 40th place doesn’t sit right with me. Especially when you consider some of our podium finishing songs!
All 5 victories were so good. 😊

Embers was actually a banger and I will die on this hill

AMAZING VIDEO!!!! PLEASE do Sweden next, then Norway, Germany, etc etc etc etc
Flip number two and three and then I think you got it right! Save All Your Kisses For Me was a huge hit all over the globe!

If they both got first placed but one year had 5 competitors and the other had 100 the one with 100 would place higher
Olly Alexander- winner 2024 ❤
Spaceman 🇬🇧❤️
"I Wrote A Song" came 25th of 26, placing 60th of 65 British entries overall
Let's hope for some more good results now that ESC has returned to BBC1
23:23 It feels strange not having this as our best runner up…
TIL all of the UK's last place finishes were within the last 20 years. (Extra trivia, France didn't have a last place finish until 2014)
Top 8 🔥
#12 😍
Can you do Norway Next
#45 Oh he wore a kilt. 😮
How is Scooch not last ?!
For someone like Engelbert Humperdinck who only beat a song from semi 2, would it make more sense have his result as 25/34 rather than the full 42?
Interesting concept, it does add an even further layer of complication though

2003 didn't deserve that 🥹
Totally wrong the last place 😮
The rendition of Spaceman was hilarious
More like Babylon Zoo!
