The story of uk in the Eurovision:
    We are doing awesome
    Then Jemini finds the stage
Then no one can pick a decent song cause there eardrums got ripped out
Then Jade Ewen tried to save us
Then we sent a broken squeaky teenager
And it all went downhill as no one could actually listen to our music
Edit - Just realised the UK has the most 2nd places - 15

I've always attributed the language rule for the UK's poor performance post millenium. Since 2000, we've averaged something like 17th. On a few occasions like 2014, 2016 and 2017, our placings have been unfair. However on the whole, that halfway area on the scoreboard has seemed justified given the BBC's lackluster effort. However if you look at the effort the BBC made in the 1980's, there were a fair few entries equally as bland that ranked inside the top 10. Had those entries been up against more English language songs, the rot I'm afraid would have kicked in much sooner.
It's clear the BBC don't want the UK to win this because of the mammoth costs involved however they still want the rights to host the UK coverage because of the high ratings and the fact they get 8 hours worth of broadcasting for a relatively low cost. Yet the BBC are the only broadcaster in the world to charge a mandatory licence fee (not to be confused with a subscription charge). The real losers here are the UK fans who desperately want a 6th victory and are forced to pay for participation in a competition they realistically stand no chance of winning! Maybe 2019 will be different (sigh)...

Too simplistic. The real reason for Britains "downfall" in Eurovision is... POLITICS. You can map Britains position in Euro by how much Europe was enamoured with us. The change really came when the Eastern Bloc entered and Britain upset Europe by leaving the E.U. The Eurovision has ALWAYS been about politics & NEVER the music.

After Kenneth McKeller came 9th in 1966 the BBC decided to do something about Britain's performance and started to use the established pop stars of the time - Cliff/Lulu/Sandie Shaw/Mary Hopkin etc and as the 70s wore on at least established professionals like the The Shadows/Lyndsey De Paul/Brotherhood of Man and this formula worked. From 1967 to 1977 we won 3 times came second 5 times, 4th twice, 3rd once and were robbed of victory in 1968, 1972 & 1975. Unfortunately performers and tunes like that don't exist anymore and popular music as we knew it is now rubbish - when you look at some of the people who have represented us in the last 20 odd years and some of the cobblers that has won I think it proves my point. The best of it was really a late 20th century phenomenon.

@@RJSchex Oh yeah, I also know that one. Also went to Number 1 in the UK and was the best selling song of 1976 over there, reflecting with its Eurovision Win. Pretty good song, I also do like Love Shine A Light, both of Cliff Richard's Entries, Boom Bang-a-Bang, and Making Your Mind Up.
