On the evening of September 27th, 2011 Maple Batalia headed to the campus library with a friend. They had a late night study session planned and met up with a few more people there as well.
As the hours ticked by into the next morning, Maple hugged her friends goodbye and walked to her car.
Just minutes after 1am, a resident heard 7 loud bangs in quick succession. Maple was lying on the ground, having been shot several times. The race was now on to find her killer.

Lol. Dating is evil, and it magnifies evil emotions. That's why the Lord Most High prescribed marriage. If they hadn't had a fornicative relationship, she might still be alive rather than having tried in vain to escape the fallout of a cursed union. She saw his colored eyes and mistook a devil for an angel.

It's very very very common that the possessive ones are also cheaters themselves. It's like they project their own low morals onto their partner/ex-partner. Cheating is so easy to them that they can't understand other people aren't like that, so they become posessive and controlling while also cheating themselves. I know they had broken up, but probably not in his twisted mind.

There is such a predictable pattern, yet police seem powerless until a woman is actually murdered. Screw Civil Rights !!! Cops need to be somehow able to intervene very early in the stalking script. There was a girl called Alice Ruggles in the UK and her ex stalked and killed her and again it was he that cheated on her.
So these cases are purely about control and ego.

This was so close to being my fate, at the same age, too. I tried to break-up with a guy I had dated for about 3 years and he lost it. He followed me to my university, waited for me to leave and forced me in his car, only to show me the gun between the drivers seat and the console. He told me that I would not be breaking up with him and I would be continuing our relationship as normal, which was full of physical and mental abuse. I was young, didn’t know what to do at that point except play along for the time being. When I felt there was a little time and space between us, I told my dad and he confronted my ex. Surprisingly, he was very scared of my dad and distanced himself for a while. We also called the police and told them that ex was stalking me, though I didn’t tell my parents or the police about the gun and the threats on my life. They spoke to him and it also scared him more than I thought it would. During this time, I took what was my last call from him after he called my home dozens and dozens of times. He told me he was going to turn the gun on himself instead and that he was calling me to say goodbye. I called his brother and he and his wife rushed to my ex and found him with the gun loaded and a suicide note written. They talked him out of hurting himself (his uncle had shot himself in the head and killed himself just a couple years prior so it was taken very seriously) and he went on to have several relationships, none of them lasting very long to my knowledge. I don’t know why or how I made it out of that situation. I still worry he’ll have his revenge on me some day. I live a couple thousand kilometres away now and I’m not on Facebook or anything like that because I don’t want him knowing anything about me. I feel lucky everytime I think of that time. I wish Maple had a chance to get away. We need to do more to prevent this situation. Too many girls and women are killed by their partners around the world just for being female and not interested in continuing an abusive relationship. RIP Maple.

Yeah, I noticed the correlation, also. It's so heartbreaking that no matter what culture, there's always entitled pieces of shit that think they can treat their partners/exes like property. Makes me sick.

Good heavens, she was absolutely beautiful. What a horrible horrible waste, she must have been the most amazing girl. Her poor family, I just hope they will be ok somehow, they loved Maple so so much and you can see that they are broken without her.

LOL no parole before 21 years, I hope the judges and politicians who enact these laws have to go through the same pain and agony as this family has. He'll be 47, 48 and may have the opportunity to get out and start a new life, I love canada but this makes no sense.

I thought this case happened in America at first as I missed parts of it and heard American sounding accents but when I heard the appalling leniency of the sentences I knew it was in Canada. Disgraceful 'justice' system.

The end had me sobbing. What a beautiful, talented girl, a blossom, and a weakling of a man cannot handle being left. Is she going to walk out of her grave when he gets paroled/released? What will happen to the next woman who rejects him...? May the poor relatives find peace.

Not sure whu these girls feel compelled to date at such a young age, especially a girl like this who has a full course schedule and acting gigs on the side. I worked full time in grad school and was always too exhausted to date.

Wtf. Stupid Gary. He’s the one that cheated on her, was insecure and a loser and yet he had the audacity to get jealous of her when she tried to move on with her life? The other guy should’ve gotten a longer sentence. He tried to help Gary get away with murder. For me, that’s literally murdering her too. He knew what Gary was going to do. These stupid bastards. Much love to the beautiful Batalia family.

he has since been released having served only 18 months of a 22 month sentence. Like what the heck? That is barely more than the time for a misdemeanor here in the states.

I know people in grief often speak in absolute and exaggerated terms, but can you imagine being the other daughter and hearing your parents saying "Now I have nothing... everything is gone" ... that would be hurtful and hard to hear.
