    This tutorial covers how to create an After Effects smoke trail using a particle emitter. This smoke trail animation is created using some key techniques in after effects that are essential to creating a smoky effect.
    The techniques covered to create a Smoke trail in After Effects have much wider applications so you are getting so much more than just a smoke trail!

    Great video. I'm just starting out and I can see you pickwhip producer position of particle systems ii to the "movement null" but when I try replicate something like this on my end, it throws expression errors regarding the pickwhip since "movement null" is a layer and not a number/array/property.
    I assumed movement null was just a new null object, but since it is instantiated as a layer, was the movement null from this video created some other way other than just "new null object"?

    • @Makofueled
      @Makofueled Před 9 měsíci +2

      Nevermind I'm blind. I pickwhipped to the "movement null" instead of the movement null's position property. If anyone has the same issue that's any easy fix!
      Eg my expression was ' thisComp.layer("cannon_null") '
      instead of ' thisComp.layer("cannon_null").transform.position '
      Awesome guide, thanks & subbed!

    Hey man, Great tutorial! Thats exacly the type of effect i am looking for. The thing is that my scene requires the trail to have some perspective cause it's going to chase a soccer ball and i struggle to achive that. Any ideas?

    • @MotionXP
      @MotionXP  Před rokem

      Thanks Mike! Its a bit hard to give advice without seeing the shot with the soccer ball...any chance you can link to it so, I can give some proper input?

    great tutorial thank you. I got a question if you dont mind answering, what if i already have a moving object (3d spaceship) already moving in my video and all i want is for the particles to follow it like a jet fire, how would i go about doing this? when i pickwhip it, it stays on the spaceship, so how could i change the position so it will be behind of the 3d spaceship? thank you

    Hi there, I'm getting it right up until where the emitter should follow the null object, it seems to follow it but only in a straight line. Any advice?

    • @joeywilhelm6123
      @joeywilhelm6123 Před 9 měsíci +1

      It took me a second too. Make sure you're linking the PRODUCER position to the null object instead of TRANSFORM position

    How would you make a trail effect but the ball remain on the center of the screen ?
    I already set up a moving background

    • @MotionXP
      @MotionXP  Před 8 měsíci

      Great question. There may be a more suitable effect but if you want to keep using CC particle systems 2 , then you will need to tweak some physics settings:
      Change animation to "direction"
      Increase your velocity
      Take gravity to 0 (or not if you prefer)
      take extra to 0 (or close to 0)
      change direction to what you require.
      You can play around with some of the other setting to get what you like but hopefully this gets you close to what you need!

    Wait... The dots at the end just fall as the circle passes by them?

    • @MotionXP
      @MotionXP  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Yeah, I managed to created an interaction between the orb and the background dots by using the orb as a selection map for the gravity property of the effect particle playground. Check out Jake Bartletts tutorial on particle playground if you want to learn how to create these kinds of interactions!
