how is "Undiscovered Country" ranked worse than "Beyond" and "Generations" !? The movie has a great story, it's filled with tense moments, and it flows very well. I can always watch the final battle scene over and over again.
^ this
Yea I 3rd this too!
I will fourth this comment as well.
My number 2. Behind Generations. I'm the guy that hates Kahn, not Final Frontier but bad!
To increase audience engagement.
Decent vid but cannot agree with generations being above undiscovered country. It was a classic Cold War thriller. It was epic!
I'm glad to see Generations getting some appreciation nowadays but I have to agree that The Undiscovered Country is better, I would put it in the top 3.
@@benwillis5840 Generations was terrible. Was so boring.
Agree 100%! The Undiscovered Country is my fave Trek film.
I totally agree with you! Undiscovered Country is top three for me!
And it's the first one with a Worf in it. Also the Klingon Shakespeare stuff was a reference to a line in OG Trek by Chekov, even reusing the line changing it from "original Russian" to "original Klingon".
Not sure how you can class Generations ahead of Undiscovered Country but we all have our own opinions
Undiscovered Country is at the very least, the second best Trek film. errrrrr!!!!!
I could put it 3rd (Behind WoK and FC) but definetly not 6th.
I agree that Undiscovered Country is the best movie. It certainly is in the top three with WoK and FC.
I say 3 but I would debate it. I love Undiscovered Country
Agreed.
II: An undeniable classic, but with a dash too much gravity in its tone.
IV: An undeniable classic, but with a bit too much levity to take seriously.
VI: Takes itself seriously, but with just enough comic relief. Undiscovered Country is Goldilocks, baby! :-D
I still remember when the audience cheered when the Klingon ship blows up.
@@shadowlands339 Followed by in Generations, when they didn't cheer and went, "wait, was that the ship from the last movie?"
@@Sephiroth144 I didn't notice that until years later myself.
@@shadowlands339 I like that it was Uhura who figured out how to do it: "Well, that thing's got to have a tailpipe!"
You’ve got to be kidding. Generations ranking higher than Undiscovered Country? 2, 4, and 6 are easily the top 3 and it’s no coincidence that Nick Meyer was involved in all three. First Contact ranks 4th.
Agreed... except I don't understand the love for First Contact.
I wouldn't rate First Contact so low, but I agree with the rest
I completely understand why TMP is placed where it is, but I'll still take its cerebral slower-paced narrative over Into Darkness or Nemesis any day.
Same, every time.
Indeed!
Absolutely. Id put final.fontier , while it's not the best it's not the worst by any means. That dishonour goes to nemesis. Had a great concept but an extremely awful execution by a director who'd never even bothered to watch any star trek. At least with TFF Shatner was trying if somewhat hamstring by various different external factors.
My personal favourite is Star Trek: First Contact followed by Star Trek lV: The Voyage Home.
I 100% agree with this.
Same
I would go voyage home then first contact, but pretty much right there with you!
I recommend Mr Broccolli for Captain.
@@Browncoat66 Broccoli has already taken over the Federation
Personally I'd rank STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURES, especially the director's edition, higher on the list. Robert Wise was able flesh out more of what he was trying to accomplish in that version vs the version Paramount rushed into theaters.
Thought I was upgrading when I sold my DVD box set and bought Blu. I'm sure II, VI, and maybe III also had extended cuts that weren't on them. Are they still out there on new editions?
(Just in case anyone reading this is inclined to share their sympathies, there's no need. Just because I'm commenting with a first-world problem doesn't mean I'm crying over it. 🙂)
@@alm2187 Paramount recently announced they were going to remaster Robert Wise's director's edition for release but I don't know when that is. Yeah, I did the same thing. Chucked my DVDs for Blu-Rays. Got made they weren't the correct releases and went out and bought the DVDs again.
ST:TMP definitely had problems, but imo, no other Trek movie aspired to greater heights .
13: Final Frontier
12: Insurrection
11: 1979
10: Nemesis
9: Into Darkness
8: Generations
7: Beyond
6: 2009
5: Search for Spock
4: Voyage Home
3: Kahn
2: First Contact
1: Undiscovered Country
Generations at 4, and 6 at 5, gotta really disagree on that. Personally I’d have 6 at 2, but love the channel👍
Yeah same here.
List lost me as soon as Generations was ranked as a better movie than Undiscovered Country.
So. Much. Truth. in this.
Undiscovered Country is easily one if the best star trek films. I hold it roughly around the same spot as wrath of khan.
I definitely felt Star Trek: Beyond was the most Star Trek-esque of the newer films and I loved it. Agree with the list for the most part. Also, this might be a hot take but First Contact has easily the best score of any of the Star Trek movies.
Magic. Carpet. Ride.
I definitely agree with that.
Hm. Mostly I agree, but I'd have moved Generations down a bit. I think Kirk's death was simply too unceremonious. An epic character needed a more epic sendoff. Even Data's death in Nemesis had more emotional impact.
Small error, it wasn't Shatner's idea to include more comedic elements in ST:V, it was Paramount and the execs who wanted to replicate IV's success
The Search for Spock is very underrated. It’s the ultimate Kirk movie
It's a solid, fun, well-directed caper film. If Edward James Olmos had been cast as Kruge instead of Christopher Lloyd - as Nimoy wanted - it would be a classic.
This is one list where I'm more interested in the order of the crap movies, rather than what's number one.
I'd have put Generations in the bottom half and Undiscovery Country in the top three. But other than that, pretty much agree!
Many people would have differing ideas on what makes great Trek but I agree 100% with the top four.
For me, Star Trek Generations is higher on the list. I think they really dropped the ball and could have done a lot more. The battle between the Enterprise and the old Bird of Prey was a joke as well.
Leonard Nimoy was supposed to be in it, but he declined because he had very few lines. Other members of the TOS cast were not even asked to make an appearance.
I would have swapped "The Undiscovered Country" and "Generations", otherwise spot-on mate!
I have to agree with the last statement regarding that there's no wrong order for the worst to best Star Trek movie but that Wrath of Khan must be number one in any list. Anything less than number one for the Wrath of Khan and one couldn't take such a list seriously at all.
0:04 "I'm here to salvage this show"
80s Slow clap and head nod....LOL
Good list but one Thing....
*Not having Star Trek 6 The Undiscovered Country in Top3 is almost a SIN*
I’m feeling pretty happy with your assessment. Good work!
Sad to see that this list didn't include the adult films like "Star Trek: The Next Penetration".
lol
Every time something crummy happens I say "this is why the aliens only wanted to talk to the whales."
It's rare that I agree with many 'ranking best/worst', but I agree completely with this video completely.
Nimoy came back for ST III on the condition that he be allowed to direct it. If they had said no, he would have said no. He wanted to direct films.
I still like how he rated Generations pretty high. I have always been very fond of that movie. Still don't get why people hate it.
Star Trek the motion picture is not as bad as people say and deserves to be much higher on the list.
Undiscovered Country is #2 or #3 (interchangeable with Voyage Home). Very good plot, surprises, humor, great supporting actors and a proper “finale” for the original crew.
I thought the best of the JJ ones was the original in 2009, and I would have ST:VI a *lot* higher (probably 3rd overall), and Generations a bit lower, but...
I take Umbridge with your ranking of STAR TREK THE MOTION PICTURE (1979). Good day sir. I SAID GOOD DAY, SIR!!
Thank you Doctor Ball !
There's no such thing as a bad Trek movie. Some are better or more popular than others, that's all. 🖖
I had always thought "Generations" was a GREAT film! Thank you!!
surprised to hear that TrekCulture considers Nemesis and Into Darkness to be good films. also, Beyond wasn't a bad film it was just boring. agree with the Top Three though.
I can only say, I agree with the whole list... And yes, Khan goes to its rightful place, the top...
The final frontier had some of the best moments in all of Trek. Seeing Spock and McCoy face their pain and then having kirk straight up say that he needed his pain was fucking fantastic. The movie gets way more shit than it deserves to. Is it the wrath of Khan? No. But it's still a great Trek film.
Also, bonus points for McCoy being the one to tell Kirk to cool it with Spock since no man should have to kill his own brother. Even with all their arguing, it makes sense that he would defend Spock there, it was a cool scene.
I liked ST: TMP. I seen it in 1979 when I was 20. To me it was as good a Nemesis which to me was a great film.
How do you not start with the original motion picture. I still haven't seen it without falling asleep
My personal favorite: the voyage home and first contact
Voyage Home definitely deserves to be on a much higher pedestal than it is. Certainly higher than the revenge plot made to appeal to general audiences lol
Fun and related fact about The Voyage Home:- The animatronic humpback whales win the film a Oscar.
Pretty much the order I expected. Odd number films at the bottom, reboots in the middle, even numbers at the top.
1. Wrath of Khan
2. First contact
3. Undiscovered Country (Though admittedly I haven't seen the 3rd in the reboot series.)
Has anyone noticed how the footage of the runabout crashing in the DS9 episode Hippocratic Oath is reused from Generations (or vise versa). The viewscreens on the enterprise d and the runabout show the same footage.
I’ve never noticed that; is that the one where bashir and obrien end up on that planet and try to help the jem’hadar?
Love this channel
In many moons to come, Star Trek Into Darkness will be redeemed as a severely underrated and under appreciated gem. (just like Star Trek Nemesis). Yes, Star Trek II is my fave film, but watch Into Darkness on it's own merits, pretend Wrath didn't exist............now, watch and relive the magic. Live long and prosper.
Into Darkness is a Die Hard movie with star Trek characters names
Bro, Insurrection is my favorite. How is Nemesis higher on the list among others! Insurrection has good battles, romance, good scripting for the characters and incredible script writing for the interaction with the baku. It gives so much where other movies lack.
"The Motion Picture" is my favorite Star Trek film. I love my Sci-Fi slow paced and thought provoking. I need time to breathe. The more fast paced and action packed the Star Trek film, the worse it is in my opinion. Leave that for space fantasy movies like Star Wars.
My Star Trek movie Ratings:
1.) Voyage Home
2.) Undiscovered Country
3.) Wrath Of Khan
4.) Star Trek 2009
5.) Star Trek Beyond
6.) First Contact
7.) Star Trek Generations
8.) Final Frontier
9.) Into Darkness
10.) Insurrection
11.) Search For Spock
12.) Nemesis
13.) Motion Picture
So in ST4, did Starfleet send a ship to follow the whale probe home afterward? Certainly they'd be interested in making contact with its builders.
I love the new ones it's what brought me into Star Trek
I like how in every single bridge view scene looking forward over the ship, there is no saucer there, just emptiness.
Because it's not a window, it's a screen. It's not showing you the view from where it is.
@@Linerunner99I thought it was both
I’m sorry, I cannot get past this video saying Star Trek - The Motion Picture “isn’t nearly as cinematic as it should have been” (!!!). It’s the *most* cinematic film in the entire franchise! It could hardly *be* any more cinematic.
I'll do this ranking before watching, so i can compare the 2.
13 Insurrection
12 The Motion Picture
11 Beyond
10 Nemesis
9 First Contact
8 Into Darkness
7 The Final Frontier
6 The Voyage Home
5 Star Trek (2009)
4 The Wrath Of Khan
3 The Search For Spock
2 Generations
1 The Undiscovered Country
They forgot to put Galaxy Quest on this list. ;)
Dude, you have no clue. You're that guy at parties who picks at every single choice in music, aren't you? I couldn't finish this.
Watching!! 😃
First contact gave me so many emotions it is so good :)
Your preference to TOS or TNG is what defines your number 1
Khan - the torchbearer of Good Trek Movies. Weighty themes of aging and death, admitting fault and painting over some plot holes.
Country - Almost a perfect movie. Great sendoff for the OG crew. I would have liked to have seen Valeris doing more.
Contact - Best 'TNG' era movie by far. Solid film. Big Space Battle (tm) only really lasts a few minutes, though it is a thrilling few minutes. Great interactions with the cast, and wonderful direction by Frakes.
Voyage - Just pure fun going up against a potentially dark storyline. Everyone gets a chance to do something and it is well done.
Beyond - Surprisingly very good, felt like the most Star Trek of the JJ films. Fun film, if a bit popcorny.
Spock - Lots of opportunity lost here, though still a quality film.
2009 - Taking Bro Kirk out of this one improves it. Spock and Bones are a delight against a badly written Kirk.
TMP - For an audio/visual experience, it's great. It seems like space porn wrapped up with Star Trek.
Insurrection - Space Elves squat on a planet and somehow it's a prime directive issue, and it wasn't even the correct prime directive issue. Just a pure mess, it felt like an episode from early in the third season of TNG when the humanlike ubermenches were still running around being insufferably arrogant.
Generations - Kirk dies as an afterthought. The Enterprise being destroyed in ST3 was given more reverence.
Nemesis - The movie that killed the franchise for almost a decade. Worf shows up literally out of nowhere. Speaking of the almighty PD, a total violation of it so that Picard can drive around on a bad hummer. An interesting idea with the Romulans fell short.
Frontier - Pure mess. You don't need triple breasted cat dancers in a gritty scifi search for "god" who ends up be a bad giant floating head. Many of the players were just there for a paycheck, and it shows.
Darkness - Flip of ST2 with Kirk dying then brought back by space necromancy. It's an unwatchable assault on Trek.
My favorite films are Generations, followed by The Undiscovered Country.
First Contact is a great movie.
ive always liked the motion picture over wrath of Khan
Same here, it's more interesting.
Great list.
The Motion Picture, The Final Frontier, and Nemesis are the very three Star Trek movies that I don’t count as Star Trek continuity.
I named my three dogs after #1. Spock, Saavik, and Khan.
Wrath of Khan always deserves the top spot on any Star Trek list. Getting Montalban to reprise his iconic character was key, as recasting Khan would not have worked at all.
I agreed with the whole list up until we got to Undiscovered Country. I would have ranked that one third and moved everything else down one spot.
Putting Generations that high up is... Bold
Having Beyond in your top 5 puts you in my good book
1. The Wrath Of Khan A+
2. First Contact A
3. The Voyage Home A
4. The Undiscovered Country A
5. The Motion Picture A-
6. The Search For Spock A-
7. Star Trek 2009 B+
8. Beyond B-
9. Insurrection C+
10. Into Darkness D+
11. The Final Frontier F
12. Generations F
Definitely an interesting list. Quite frankly, Star Trek the Motion Picture was somewhat great when it first came out. But, it didn't really last as being a very good Star Trek movie after the other Star Trek movies that had came out after the Motion Picture
I know the hot take we are discussing is Undiscovered Country being under Generations. But I do really wanna see anyone dare to say the truth, which is that Into Darkness is actually a great Star Trek movie and the only actual bad bit of it is the final 15 minutes. Those 15 minutes are bad. Yes. But it is a lot better Star Trek movie than 09, Search for Spock and Generations. The conflict is stronger, the morality is more interesting, and the use of the No Win Scenario story is stronger than every other film in the franchise, including Wrath of Khan. Like they literally can't win their predicament, so they have to try to cheat their way to a victory and they still fail. The final 15 minutes hurts the film a lot but it is still really really great before that. Even Kirk's death is super well done and emotional. It's just them doing the "Khan!" meme and onwards where the film falls apart.
Star Trek Generations: Bridge on the Captain
It is known that there are things in V that were declared non-canonical. It is also the case that creating the separate Kelvin Timeline raises issues with canonicity. It is not a stretch, in fact, as one of our own future ancestors, would say, it is only "logical" to conclude, as you conclude you must, that all of the films are in fact non-canonical. YES EVEN KHAN.
Joining the chorus: Why is Undiscovered Country on near the top and Generations not languishing in the middle?
Star Trek V IMO only had one good part, that when Kirk is climbing El Capitan in Yosemite during the opening credits. The campfire scene was good in that it reinforced the relationship between Kirk, Spock and McCoy. After that it was a dumpster fire.
1. The Undiscovered Country
2. The Search for Spock
3. The Motion Picture
4. Nemesis
5. The Wrath of Khan
6. The Voyage Home
7. First Contact
8. Generations
9. Insurrection
10. Star Trek 2009
11. Into Darkness
12. The Final Frontier
13. Beyond
First Contact. At least for me...based on the sheer number of times that I have watched it over all the others.
I’d probably have VI ranked better. Every time I watch the movies through I find VI to be pleasantly spectacular.
And while I enjoy IX, it’s more like a 2 part TNG episode, not a movie. Same for X.
Woah woah woah…. Undiscovered country at #6?! No way bro. Needs to be waaaaaay higher. Can’t believe you put Beyond higher. That is insane!
ST the Undiscovered Country ranks highest than Generations IMO.
I change my mind on multiple occasions so this might not be 100% accurate.
13) Insurrection
12) The Final Frontier
11) The Motion Picture
10) Nemesis
9) Generations
8) Into Darkness
7) The Search for Spock
6) The Voyage Home
5) Beyond
4) Star Trek
3) The Undiscovered Country
2) First Contact
1) The Wrath of Khan
My favorite will probably always be Voyage Home.
Absolutely agree, the Wrath of Kahn has to be number one, anything else would be illogical.
Oh my
My 2¢… I’d bump The Voyage Home up to #2…… I also agree with Chris Pine not quite “fitting in” but neither did Shatner, albeit for different reasons. Love the video.
Good and nice list, tho I have to say that I disagree with most if it. Nevertheless the video is still enjoyable 😊
Yay!
Malevolence. Manevolence... That's not a thing. (good list, though, couldn't agree more)
I had to I had to check if it was
"Worst to Best" or "Best to Worst" several times.
How is Nicholas Meyer not getting the credit for STII?
OMG loved "and WOK must be number one" good list overall. Think Generations has gained some appreciation over the years.
TWOK and First Contact taking 1 and 2, and Final Frontier dead last, are fixed points in time that must never be altered. All other variations are possible, with differing likelihoods
Like the Motion Picture, I couldn't get into the narrator for this video. The source material was great, but I found myself mostly wanting to go rewatch something with VO by Clery or Bronzy... not unlike how the Motion Picture made me want to just rewatch the series.
I've seen them all and liked them all. Some more than others.
Well, being a fan I disagree a lot with this ranking, haha. Mine is:
13) Nemesis.
12) Star Trek V.
11) Insurrection.
10) Generations.
9) Star Trek TMP.
8) Into Darkness.
7) Star Trek III.
6) Star Trek IV.
5) Beyond.
4) ST 2009.
3) Star Trek VI.
2) First Contact.
1) Star Trek II.
Haven't y'all already done this?
This will be a good list
