  • I recently decided to rewatch all the Star Trek films. SO I thought why not rank all 13 Star Trek movies from the worst to the best. The first ranking on my channel was of the Star Trek movies, but that was 4 years ago and my standards and opinions have changed a good bit.

As someone that hadn’t seen Star Trek before the Chris pine movies, I really enjoyed the pine movies. It seems to me that Sean’s biggest criticism of these movies are that the characters don’t act like the characters in the original (which I suppose is a fair criticism). But because of the time line set up in the 2009 movie, these are different characters. I think these movies do a good job of intriguing a younger audience that haven’t seen Star Trek before by making the movie a bit more like an action blockbuster. Let me know what y’all think

    From my top 800 list:
    598. Nemesis
    597. FF
    596. Insurrection
These three are interchangeable down here; equally and differently flawed.
    395. ST2009
    394. Gen.s
    393. BYD
Let’s face it, 2009’s plot has some super wonky elements. And despite the philosophical depth, Generations’ plot needed work, too. Despite the gimmicky bits of the plot and disgruntled villain #3bln, BYD had fun callbacks and crew combinations- a follow up to this would only have been better.
    180. TMP
    The most underrated Trek ever.
Yes, there are pacing problems, but that’s really it.
Kirk has a character growth arc.
Spock has a character growth arc.
    Even Decker and Ilia.
McCoy is his usual fun self, constantly quotable.
True, hard science fiction in this most Trekkian of movies. Best warp effect ever. Glossy visual fx ahead of their time. One of the best movie scores ever. Introduction of the best version of the Enterprise ever. No standard angry villains, no killing, just a mysterious entity with a personal problem, leading up to a uniquely transcendent solution, all while gradually bringing the band/crew back together after a long separation and Kirk finds his groove again.
    160. Und. Country
Generally good Trek, it just suffers from a dab of mystery-itis. (Once it’s solved, everything is painfully obvious on subsequent viewings.)
    66. First Contact
    44. Voyage Home
    33. In Search of
    9. Khan’s Lettuce Wrap Wrath

I thought Beyond was too low on the ranking. I really enjoyed that one and I, on the opposite side, found it to be one of the more memorable Trek movies, especially with the characters, humor, and creative action sequences. It felt more like classis Star Trek compared to Into Darkness, and that alone was enough to take the rebooted series in a better direction (plus a great way to celebrate the franchise turning 50!). Honestly, I'd put it at 3 or 4 in my ranking

Ironically I actually like j.j.abrahms as a director and love his reboot of Star wars. It felt and looked like Star wars relying on practical effects as much as possible. Star trek a series often used models no had an over reliance on CGI. Many characters such as Khan feel wrong. Khan did not have an English accent but Spanish and was very muscular. I just can't look beyond the coincidences and the casting which was good, especially feel Scotty feel very off at times. Abraham's fell more star wars Than the prequel series whether You like it or not. His star trek movies on the other hand feels very star trekesque but definitely not an updated version of the franchise I grew up with.

1: Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan (for all the reasons Sean states here, lol)
2: Star Trek: First Contact (an absolutely incredible movie which showcases just why TNG cast were so damn good together)
3: Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country (Nick Meyer is back behind the camera after giving us Wrath of Khan and he shows just why he is the best director out there for ST)
4: Star Trek: The Voyage Home (Its a little zany, some of the comic relief is a little campy, Scotty talking to the mouse for example, but it just reminds you why you fell in love with these characters)
5: Star Trek: The Search for Spock (the perfect example of just exactly what Kirk is all about and how they have so screwed him up in the JJ'verse Trek)
6: Star Trek: The Motion Picture (yes it's slow, but it hits you in the feels really hard at times. Seeing Kirk again, seeing the Enterprise in dry dock and that swelling score. I can forgive the boredom)
7: Star Trek: Insurrection (It's not great, but it's not as bad as some people think. And Starfleet needing to make such deals with aliens due to the losses in the Dominion War makes sense to me)
8: Star Trek: Generations (Kirk should of had a better send off I feel and the plot is a little all over the place at times)
9: Star Trek: Nemesis (TNG movies go out with a whimper rather than a bang, but they are still better than the crap from the JJ'verse)
10: Star Trek: Beyond (With Simon Pegg on script duties the plot tries to come back to what makes Trek great, but with the Fast&Furious director behind the camera it doesn't stand a chance)
11: Star Trek 2009 (I'm sorry, I just can't really get behind any of the new Trek movies, they just don't have the heart of the originals and screw up Kirk and Spock so badly. Thank God for Karl Urban)
12: Star Trek: Into Darkness (there's so much wrong with this movie I don't know where to start, lol)

My favorite is Star Trek 4- it feels like a Romcom and it is so refreshing after watching Wrath of Khan and the search for Spock which both had darker tones. I also really like, Star Trek Beyond, but maybe that’s because I don’t consider Shatner’s Kirk to be the same character as the Kelvin Timeline Kirk.
But the tv shows are always better, TOS!

    13. The Motion Picture- never liked slow-pace films. Instead of the very beginning, I lose interest real fast.
    12. Insurrection- What was the deal with Picard's romantic interest in a lady that was married with a son? Weird. This film use to be higher for me.
    11. 2009- Kirk becomes Pike's protege. I liked that part of the storyline.
    10. Beyond- it reminded me a little bit like Insurrection but I did enjoy the banter between Bones and Spock.
    9. Final Frontier- I enjoy watching the crew going camping.
    8. The Search for Spock- the space dock escape is definately a rewatch
    7. Wrath of Khan- When I first saw this film, I loved it. The spoof though tops it for me.
    6. The Undiscovered Country- the finale where the Enterprise is trying to find a Klingon Bird of Prey under cloak and having the General taunting Kirk at the same time makes it a re-watch for me.
    5. Nemesis- why kill Data? Why? Was it really necessary?
    4. Generations- Soran is an underrated villian in the Trek universe and might be the best one-off villian in all of television.
    3. The Voyage Home- Double dumb-ass on you if this isn't in your top 3.
    2. First Contact- Starring the scourge of Trek universe and my childhood hero. No way it's not up there for me.
    1. Into Darkness- non-stop action and Kirk really matures as a Captain.

I think you can make that argument with 2009 (hence why that one is high on my list). But when you give him a purpose, a crew and a ship....he should have already grown up. At some point he needs to resemble the classic character.

Personally Into Darkness is my favorite Star Trek film. But I only saw the new trilogy and none of the older ones so I’d probably like it less if I saw the earlier films first. I still have a blast when I watch Into Darkness and it’s the most emotional I felt in any of the films because of when (spoiler alert) Kirk “died”. I know he came back but when I watched it I didn’t know that. Also Khan is the best villain in the trilogy if u ask me, partially because I love Cumberbatch but I still think he’s great.

My favorite franchise of all time. With everything going on in the world and all the nastiness it's nice to have a franchise where all these people who have WILDLY different perspectives about what's going on in these stories being able to actually have a decent conversation about how to solve the problems at hand without going after each other. At least they try to do that. That's what's great about the various series, they've all got varied tones and their own particular perspectives

My dad's gf and myself both dislike Kirk's fate in Generations because of what he said about how he always knew he would die alone. But my dad's counterpoint to that is that Kirk *did* die alone... The first time. So that has helped me come to terms with it a little bit more.
As for Kelvin Kirk being different from Prime Kirk... That seems nitpicky to me. They're two different people, shaped by completely different life experiences. I don't get bothered by the Kelvin versions of the characters being different from their Prime counterparts. Spock in the Kelvin timeline also has far less loyalty to the Vulcan order. He lets his emotions show more often, he doesn't seem to be betrothed to T'Pring, etc. It's different for a reason. So we can see these characters in different situations that the Prime universe wouldn't have allowed them to be in. I embrace it.

Other than that, I "like" or at least find "fine" the other movies in the franchise. Even Insurrection is all right and Nemesis is EXTREMELY frustrating.
