How to paint edges in watercolour - soft & hard, lost & found - edges take you to the next level

- Painting varied edges and achieving balance helps take your watercolours to the next level. Hard and soft, lost and found (even throw in a bit of broken) and you will capture interest and variety with your paint brush, to intrigue (and delight) your viewers. Well that's the theory!
In this short film, I'll explain what edges are, show you some examples and give you tips on how to achieve them. A hard edge is pretty obvious (wet paint on dry paper), but how can you control soft edges? Can you soften an edge once the paint is dry? I will share one of my 'aha' moments when I realised that the direction in which you soften an edge makes such a difference.
Too many soft edges and your work may end up as an indistinct blur and too many hard edges, it may look childish and cut out. If you lose lots of edges, you may confuse the viewer, but if you find them all your painting may be shouty. We will try for a balance and mix. However, right at the end I will show you some wonderful hard edged work from Benjamin Pearce, which is the exception which proves the rule....
I've never added chapters to a film before so I am going to have a go here. Let me know if this is helpful or not:
Chapters
0:00 introduction
0:55 what is an edge?
1:20 examples of hard and soft, lost and found edges
4:40 How to paint hard edges
5:05 How to do soft edges
6:16 THIS IS THE IMPORTANT BIT: Direction matters!
11:10 The exception which proves the rule

Lovely concise information. Thanks Liz.
You are so welcome!
I also had no idea what lost/found, hard/soft was, but this video has made it very easy to understand. Thank you!
Edges make such a huge difference!
Thank you - very easy to understand. Your examples perfectly reflect what you are saying. Going to watch more!

Lol…auto correct!! Should be….excellent NOT excitement….???
Oh well, I can also tell you how I appreciate the way you demonstrate everything and you cover every detail explaining reasons behind what you share with us.
BIG thank you, Liz
Auto correct can be a right pain!

So pleased it helped 😊
great tutorial Liz. thanks so much!
Glad it was helpful! I’m open to suggestions for future topics?
I'm so glad Jamie asked this question as I thought everyone who uses watercolour knew and I didn't want to appear stupid. Thank you for explaining in such detail which makes it so easy to remember when it is logically explained. I've been struggling to paint a cats face with more interest by painting wet on wet to suggest hair but could't quite right.
If you have the question, you can bet someone else does too! No stupid questions ever
Thank you for presenting this in such an easy to understand and clear way! I adore your channel...so glad I have recently found you!
You are so welcome! that’s lovely to hear.
Really great tutorial, thank you. X
My pleasure!

Please could you do a video about how you choose the colours you're going to use for a painting? How you decide which will work well together and work for the painting you are doing? Xx
Great idea! I’ll need to have a good think about that one.
Thank you so much, Liz - clearly explained and demonstrated and very helpful!
glad it was helpful
Very good explanation of edges and how to create them. Thank you 😊
Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
More great watercolour discussion, thanks Liz! Could you talk about scaling up at some point please? I’m really interested in tips to paint bigger pieces… it’s not so simple as just getting a bigger piece of paper it seems and as your are Queen of the larger format, I couldn’t think of a better person to ask!
Ooh, I like that idea. I’m not sure I have the answer though!
I haven't seen this topic yet so maybe you've already done a video on this, but for a topic, how to improve sunset backgrounds?
thank you for the suggestion!
Very helpful! Do you make notes on a sketch ahead of time where you will have the hard and soft edges?
I usually identify areas which need to be soft and hard on a thumbnail sketch. Things can develop as they go along, especially if I use a spray bottle. It is not that accurate.
thanks!!!! Volume/light and shadow to suggest movement and turning of petals and leaves pleeease xx
thank you for the suggestions!
I have always had trouble saving the whites in watercolour. Would love some help with this please!
I hope this might help: czcams.com/video/iZ6Fqz1GCFU/video.html
@@LizChadertonArt Thank you Liz - I’ll make myself a little template of the various techniques you suggest in the video to remind me. 😀
