Modifying the CJRB Crag Pocket Cleaver - Fiets of Strength, Ep.4

  • I recently got pretty excited about the "pocket cleaver" style of pocket knives. After picking up the CRKT Pilar and the CJRB Crag, but finding neither were quite what I wanted them to be I decided to modify the crag for what would hopefully be the best of both worlds. Plus I wanted it to be a christmas present for my wife who hates that most knives are just way oversized and dont fit in her pockets. At least knives that are flipper style pocket cleavers anyway.

    That's a really awesome mod job! Thank you so much for checking out our Crag model and I hope that your cut down version works as good as it looks!

      Thanks! My wife takes the knife with her EVERYWHERE. I'd say that's a testament to the original design (and to it's new, smaller, shape). And my personal knife is still seeing plenty of use.

      This video popped up in my algorithm because I watch Mike Elmers channel. He just did a review of the CJRB Crag. He designed your Artisan Cutlery Sea Snake. It's in my cart for purchase once my stimulus money posts. 😉 I've actually got several CRJB knives in my Blade Porn wish lists. Great looking knives!

    The crag spent a few years stored away and lately has been my daily. Such a good robust knife. I wish i knew how to machine steel. Would love to delete the Flipper tab and add a reverse flick thumbhole and widen the choil make it flush with the scales🙌

    This would be great if CJRB made this in a just under 3" blade length. Legal length for many municipalities. Thanks for showing what a potential shorter smaller, Crag looks like.

      Definitely a lot of fun to make. And the smaller version gets as much use, if not more, than the big/original one.

    Nice job. It turned out great. I got the Crag 2 weeks ago and it has taken top spot in my knife rotation. Never leaves my pocket. It's a big knife, but somehow fits great in my pocket. I never notice it's there, until I need it. That brown micarta is sweet looking. I wish I would have bought that one.

      Thanks so much. It was a fun project (and my wife takes her little knife with her everywhere). You're totally right, the full size Crag fits in the pocket perfectly (on men's pants anyway) and is barely noticeable. I've usually got my brown micarta version on me most of the time. It's as useful as it is cool to look at.

    I have the same one with the recoil lock. How hard is it to flip it closed? I did have to use a file on the step down sections on the front of the lock to get better traction.

    • @FietsofStrength
      @FietsofStrength  Před 3 lety

      I've always used the side of the lock when closing it. Not sure I've ever tried to "flip" is closed. I will say that with a smaller handle and less mass in the blade it takes a bit of practice to flip the blade out. Just requires a technique that's dependent on hand size, but it'll go.

    SO BAD ASS DUDE! I would have left maybe a quarter inch more blade but this was OUTSTANDING. I wish I had the balls to chop up my Crag LMAO . * Edit * SUB'D

      @FietsofStrength  Před 2 lety

      That's not a bad call. I bet a 1/4" more blade would give it a bit more stability when you flick it open. As it is it takes a tiny bit of practice (for the short version)

    Anyway I could have you cut mine down?

      Yes possibly. It turns out they've done two separate versions of this particular knife design. I've now modified both but one is definitely easier than the other. If you can reach out to me via Instagram @j_ryde maybe we can exchange some images and see which version you have. :)
