I just got mine. Now they machine the inside of the knife. Artisan is really stepping it up on a budget knives.
This version of the Crag has become my go-to yard work knife. It’s a good size and weight, and easily holds up to the hard use. It’s also fairly easy to use with gloves.
Just make extra springs readily available or send the knife with 2 extras and everyone is happy.
Good review. Thanks for checking out the new lock. CRJB has some really nice budget blades I have only had omega springs break on my BM Bugout. That happened several times. But I have a three Hogues and four other Benchmades and never had an issue with those springs.
It has been interesting to see all the different yet different Axis style locks now that Benchmades patent has expired. Looks nice and fidgety just hope it is put on another style of knife since I am not a big fan of cleaver style knives. Thanks for showing this.
They do have it on at least one other knife. The CJRB Kicker, similar sized but with a clip point blade. Similar price point too.
Never had an omega spring break on me, knock on wood. But the last time I took apart my griptilian, I could not get the blade back into the scales. Had everything lined up, scales, washers, blade. But I couldn't get the pivot screw to push all the through. Drove me crazy until I just gave up and sent it into Benchmade to reassemble it. I have reassembled other Benchmade's, but it's never an easy process.
Definitely considering this style lock or button lock style knife for easier/quicker use at work. The original Crag seems to be my go to work knife at the moment. I snapped the tip and had to re-profile the last 3/4 inch of the blade. I actually think it’s more functional with a little belly at the end.
Thanks for the review - I've been pretty tempted by some of the newer SOG XR locks (concerned with some of the actuator buttons being composite), and am very much on the verge of picking up a Hogue Deka. There's also the CJRB Kicker with the Recoil lock and what they term to be a clip point... though IMHO it's really just a slimmed-down version of the Crag. Carbon fiber scales are just a few bucks more. I think a Deka for special days and a Crag for EDC might just do the trick.
The XR lock has plastic caps over a metal bar. I wasn't sure about that setup until I got a chance to carry a terminus xr for a few days, I think I prefer the xr lock to the axis lock now.
@@JustIn-op6oy I ended up with a Hogue Deka and love it, but also am waiting on a Demko AD20.5 Shark Foot that will be my workhorse - the Deka is the blue modified wharncliffe and is just so damn pretty that I will save it for dressier wear!
Not much of a cleaver fan. As a lefty, however, I am a big fan of ambidextrous locks. Hopefully CJRB puts this lock on some of their more "normal" knifes, like the feldspar or centros.
Power to the southpaws!
Hi I love to see you posting so much. The new lock seems good when it comes to fidget factor
That's what really matters these days lol. Fidget Factor is everything.😂🍻
You buy 22 gauge memory wire and make as many omega Springs is your heart desires
You answered my question for me thank you the deployment sucks on these knives everyone I own I had to add a Aftermarket thumb stud
Like I have said on several videos I have not ever had an Omega spring break. I have carried a few knives into real battle situations and never a failure. I have had automatic knives fail due to the powder type sand . And some work better than others with regular maintenance.
I find it rather surprising that anyone has had an Omega spring break out of a box.
I have encountered Ganzo knives having a much heavier Omega type spring and the knife is harder to break in.
Benchmade makes great knives and many service members carry them. If they were prone to breaking we would not rely on them.
As for the Recoil lock I like them. I ended up using a checkering file to make it easier to keep your finger on the transfer switch . I have a Kicker and the Crag both with the carbon fiber overlay.
The coolest lock is actually what is found on the Demko Sharklock.
Anyway rambling on about nothing. But just another opinion.
I’ve never had a spring break on a benchmade. Hard fidget a mini Griptilian the last 10 years. And hard use a Turret daily at work.
...watch it break on me tomorrow.
...I’ll try to laugh about it haha
Excellent review, MC! I have the CJRB Crag with the Recoil lock, and was wondering why my Crag cannot "drop close" like yours. My Crag has a rather pronounced detente "stop" at about a 40 degree angle after sliding the Recoil lock to close the blade, requiring a "push" from the thumb in order to "snap" it fully closed into the handle. This obviously makes the "drop close" action impossible. Other than that, it came razor sharp, with no blade play, and perfect centering. Thanks again!
I love that new lock and basically all cjrb products. Great video!
Bad reviews spread like wildfire. People remember those more than the good ones tbh. When you have people who don't even own the knife complaining about something that didn't even happen to them, that's a problem and it hurts the sale of some really great blades. I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees it.🍻👊
100% accurate comment 👍👍👍
Very true. I've noticed this is especially an issue with user review websites, as most people have no desire to post a review when the product works fine, but are very likely to complain if there's an issue, massively scewing the resulting ratings.
I bought one before the video was even over, thanks for the review!
I live in the Philippines and can buy 20 Omega springs for $5 so if it breaks I can replace it thank you for saying how it works now I will buy it.
It’s hard to tell for sure from the video, but would you say that the travel on the Recoil lock is shorter than the Axis lock? If the travel is shorter, the spring doesn’t compress as much - and less compression means longer spring life.
I broke springs on a Bugout and two Terminus XRs in about 30 days each. I sent the Bugout back, but pushed through my anger at SOG and got a 3rd set of springs. That set lasted about a year and a half before breaking recently.
If CJRB engineered an Axis-style lock with shorter travel, that would be a significant contribution to the knife world.
I've had 4 Benchmades and 2 broke their omega springs one after a year one 2 weeks after I bought it
What did you to cause the spring to break? I've had a griptillian for about 2 years now, and the springs are still going strong.
Benchmade uses a lot of titanium parts in the axis lock. I had omega springs break on my benchmade bugout after about 6 months. I did fidget with it a lot tho but benchmade’s warranty is awesome of course.
Yeah MC really dig the disassembly great review!
Love the Feldspar! It's a fun go to. Action is super full of yes. Love this knife. Don't have a cleaver yet.
All I use is red loctite on t8 and up screws… the trick is only using a small dab of it. Blue loctite is useless on knives if you oil them blue will never ever cure
Ben mentioned that the reason the Banter wasn’t an “axis style lock” is because the sliding bar lock still holds it’s patent in China. I wonder how they or if they are getting around this legally.
I literally have a mini grip and a SOG with the XR lock and both springs broke on both
Torn between this and the Keizer mini sheepdog, and the Artisan Cutlery osprey. What would you recommend?
I've never been happier to have fast forward
Amazing value. Very nice knife for a very good price!
Hey MC, would you be interested in trying a home-brew modified axis lock? I'm currently experimenting with making micarta scales that have inserts/cutouts for coil springs which should be a direct swap with the scales of a benchmade knife. Still experimenting with spring sizes and tension as well as trying to improve the aesthetics, but hopefully will have a prototype that I'm alright loaning out sometime this fall.
Hello, new to knives and just got a recoil lock crag. Got it out of the package and no matter how hard I push the flipper down, it only deploys to around halfway or like 90 degrees from the knife. Anything I can do to remedy this?
Give it a light flick!
Add oil to the pivot
ive broken all three benchmades ive owned. i fidget a ton tho. And after months of fidgetery all the axis spring fell out of the hardware. I've rebought a few and no longer fidget with them. its a bummer
I've had so many omega springs break, maybe I just have bad luck. I also never thought of oiling them either I'm gonna try that. Any suggestions on oil?
Can you do a CRAG VS. KICKER
The AD-20.5 is better… recoil has weak flipper action… 20.5 is a killer knife, and put some Ti scales what a winner!!!
Is it not necessary to put lock tight on the screws when reassembling?
Not really if the threads didn't pull it all off when you take it out. You can clean it off and reapply if you want to, but the loctite is still doing it's job pretty well after a few disassembles.
Hmmmm that’s weird mines milled out
My Benchmade Bugout spring broke in less than a hundred openings. 140$ knife. I will never trust them again, their springs I mean.
I have a 15$ Ganzo with the same lock but thicker springs and it not only has not broken with thousands of openings, but it feels sturdier. I doubt it will break in the next five years, and it's already been a few. Such a shame about Benchmade.
The Ganzo lock is no different than the Benchmade lock, and that's because Ganzo stole the design directly from Benchmade. It's susceptible to the exact same weaknesses.
@@metal_complex The one I have definitely has thicker springs. But other than that, sure they're the same. Somehow it has a smoother action with less blade play, again it's just unfortunate. Don't always get what you pay for.
