The Lost City of Ephesus - All you need to know

  • Hello peeps in this video we visited Ephesus, one of the most visited places in Turkey, now during low winter season and with covid19 around there was absolutely no tourists and we had the place just to ourselves so we had the time to appreciate and understand this magnificent ancient city, but what is Ephesus?
We will explain it very briefly as the history is long and complex:
Ephesus was a city port founded by the greeks, (the whole coast of todays Turkey was in fact part of ancient Greece during the Classical Greek Era), in the 10th century BCE.
In 129 BCE the Roman Empire took over the city and because of this most of what we see in Ephesus today is from the Roman era.
The city of Ephesus was once considered the most important Greek city, the most important trading center in the Mediterranean region and one of the richest cities, Ephesus made all its money from trade and with advanced building knowledge they built one of the greatest cities in the world that still "stands" today (some of it anyway).
Around the 15th century AD Ephesus was abandoned and the main reason for this was silt build up in the harbour, which eventually reached the point where no ship could reach the city, the city was also destroyed before this and since then was never the same and started to decline but even after nearly 3 millennia Ephesus left it's legacy to archaeologists, historians and the thousands of visitors to come to the region each year to see the ancient ruins.
Excavations started around the 18 hundreds and ONLY 15% of it has been excavated, meaning that the remain 85% is still underground, if with 15% revealed we were left speechless we can only imagine how magnificent Ephesus was once before if we had the chance to see it all.
Hope you enjoy the video and that it brings you some knowledge about Ephesus.

Turkey is a land of beautiful people, landscape and history. So very glad my sister and I visited it last November and yes, I totally agree with you, Ephesus is one of those historical places that one must visit. Thank you very much both for the wonderful down the memory lane visual and narration of Ephesus.

I visited Ephesus when I was in Turkey in dec 2018, however the tourist guide did not explained as clear as both of you did, I think the guidebook that you bought from the hotel was very very useful indeed, .. as always .. although your vlog only provided a brief explanation of the place you visited but it is enough to give us a clear picture of the historical background as well as to stimulate our mood and interest to go visit turkey and Ephesus again .. good job Joao and Christiana .. take care and stay safe always 💕🐈💕

Thank you so much, yeah the history of Ephesus is so long up until today we are still reading about it and discovering/learning more, with almost 3000 years of history is quite difficult to explain or mention everything in a short video (it would have been a documentary otherwise 😂) so we decided to just to give an insight of Ephesus and mention things we found interesting along the way 😁

Breath taking sight to behold. Not sure if you spotted the carving of the Goddess Nike. That's where it inspired sports giant NIKE to have it's swoosh logo from...from the trailing soft robe of the goddess Nike carving. Another was the universal symbol of medicine, the spear and snake twisted around it. Followed a guide who was explaining to a group of tourists there. :)
