Great subject and video production, Marko. Certainly a doubt of many, because it is not because it is in Europe that everything is cheaper than in America, for example. So cool. Bring more videos like this of you talking and interacting. Hugs
Hey that’s so true!😃thanks, I’m glad you liked it 😃
This video feels more intimate, great content Marko!. Thanks for share all this
Utrolig fint at du summerer opp hvordan det er å bosette seg i fremtiden, og jobbmuligheter! Sliter litt med det selv haha.
Hvala za video!
Another great video Marko and thanks for the transparency! So interesting to see income and expenses in other parts of the world :)
Hey thank you, Vivian 😊🙏

Hi Marko! Great video! I've always been interested in the cost of living and salaries for other countries. The salary comparisons between Norway and the USA is not as drastic as I thought it would be. The Bay Area of California is not a good representation of software developer salaries for the other parts of the USA. However, what was very surprising is the cost of purchasing real estate. In metro Atlanta, Georgia area $850k will buy a large well appointed home. What is extremely expensive in the USA is healthcare. A typical doctor visit for a minor issue can easily exceed $500, not including any prescriptions. The cost of education is also extremely expensive in the USA. How can people afford to purchase real estate in Norway? What are the typical mortgage terms (20, 30-years or more?)
tengo amigos en usa que su primer sueldo fue 180k xd como que no hay diferencia
sin contar que big tech es 10 veces mas facil entrar en usa vs europe
I'm from Norway myself so I think I'm qualified to comment. The 850k apartment he showed was pretty expensive, even by Norwegian standards. You can get an alright apartment for 400k-ish, just not in the center. Most people can't really afford to buy real estate here, so they are neck-deep in loans. Most Norwegians take out a 30-year loan to buy their first house/apartment which is usually 250-300k in the Oslo region.
@@aflexe Do homes outside of the center cost as much as that? an how is commute relatively? I live about 45 minutes commute from san francisco and its still very expensive out here maybe 800k-1.1m for a cheap house.
"The salary comparisons between Norway and the USA is not as drastic as I thought it would be." - this comparison is also completely invalid. Compare health insurance cost, compare safety - safety of employment, or even general safety, compare labour laws (or lack thereof in case of USA), compare how much holidays you're getting, etc... It would make more sense to compare cost of living in other European countries as they have similar laws/living standards, rather than corporation ruled third world country like USA.
Greetings from Italy (and from another Marco)!
I don't know if also in Norway the last three years made salaries grow a little more thanks to the opportunities of remote working (not only from abroad companies but also from Norway); here in Italy salaries in IT market have grown a bit, even though the mean salary here for a software developer is quite low than the rest of Europe (30-45k€, for a senior role is quite rare to have more than 60k€, excluding big tech companies). Yes, inflation than made this salary growth ininfluent, but that's life... :D
Hey thank you, namesake! 😃 People often spell my name Marco 😄 Thanks for sharing the perspective from Italy, I'm curious if the costs of living are more affordable in IT? 🤔
@@withmarko It depends, big cities are quite expensive (Milan in particular), rents ramped up there.
I also live in Italy, and I can confirm, the salaries here are laughable. Thankfully I’m also a US citizen, so it’s relatively easy to work for US companies remotely…If I had to work for an Italian company I’d move out of the country…There’s no way to live comfortably with these wages
@@anima87it Plus, if I'm not wrong, Italy is the only Nation in the EU where salaries have decreased in the last 20 years...
I appreciate this transparent video, I learned a lot!

I contract here in Ireland after working for a US multinational for many years and I am really enjoying this way of working!

Fantastic video. I can't wait to visit Oslo, Norway in the upcoming years. It's my goal to live there before 30.
Hey thank you, I’m glad you liked it 😃 And I hope you get the chance to come here, my friend 🙌
Switzerland here, salaries for Software engineers average 100k to 120k CHF ($110k-$132k) a year, of course with more experience theres room for higher salaries. Living expenses, especially in cities are higher though. But compared to other countries you still have more income after living expenses and food that you can spend as you wish.
Great new format 👍

Hey thanks! 😊
Hey Marko! Thanks for sharing these details.. In Macedonia (I guess in Serbia it is close) the salaries are not that big, for example average it is from 800 EUR - 3000 EUR per month depends on a experience but the expenses are very low.. The only expensive thing is the food and maybe bills but still after I compare to Norway if you get here at least 1500 EUR you are financial free when it comes to personal things you can live however you like here :)
Very interesting and informative video about wages and cost of living in Norway. 👍
Hey thanks, I’m glad you like it 😊
good luck man
wow I expected higher salaries in Norway. I live in Czech republic and Senior dev engineering salaries are +- same but we have much lower cost of living here. But property prices are also very high and interest rates - 6.2%
Yeah, no way to get rich in Norway 😄
@@withmarko yep. I see. Also if compare currency rates EUR with NOK. What happen since last year? NOK lost almost 20%. And If you want to get rich go to Portugal they have pretty nice tax regime called NHR.
Hey thanks for the tip about Portugal, but I don't know what happened to NOK man 😄
@@MartinSkopal You forgot that taxes in czech republic are much lower.
Very low interests for more than 10 years people overspend too much while having shitloads of mortgage, very high net worth taxes drives all these paper multimillionaires/billionaires out of the country reducing their overall tax to the state itself, not so much to invest in other than oil or fish industries aaand combine all that with inflation is enough to make NOK more and more worthless.
My dream is to live in Norway, such a beautiful country. I come from the sam EU region as you currently working in IT ( big US company, not that much here ) ..
Fun fact because of you I applied for a job there. Fingers crossed!
Also, amazing job with the videos. Amazing, thank you!

was waiting for the youtube income to be listed as the other income. great breakdown in norway.
Hey, I will do a separate video for my CZcams income since it’s a bit more complicated topic, there is lots to talk about 😃
Salary for devs is like twice as lower (if I got you right and 800k of krones/year it’s a 80k of usd/year) than in your example in Russia (Saint-Petersburg), but the rent is 300-500 usd for 1-2 beds apartments in good areas not far from center.
Nice video man
Thank you 😊
2:29 that's a family guy reference right there lol
ps: great video marko!
Hahaha, thanks 😄
Great video. I am also software developer (Medior) and you are inspiration for me. Love to watch your videos.
Btw: what password manager you use? 😁
Hey thanks!! 😃 I mostly use NordPass personally since they sponsor my channel from time to time 😄 But it also works great 😃
Great video. I just checked the interest rate for home loans in a few banks here in India and boom they are around 8.5%. Damn thats a lot. I am just starting out (literally joining my first job next week), and man buying a home in a big city just seems too scary.
whoever create interest rate should be ban to ever life on earth the most stupid invention
What about taxes? Is the pay 850k after or before tax? If you're paying 30% taxes or more on that money, it changes the perspective a lot.
Do the rents and apartment prices include any taxes you have to pay?
Hey Man! If you allow me, can i give my impression of your Chanel!?
Here it is: your Best vídeos Was The ones that you show you day, you in a bike anda The coffee shop you using at tha day.

Hey thanks! I'm working on that video as well 😃
I am probably from the same country as you (CRO). And here with 3 years of experience I get 1500€. Incredible how much you can make in other countries, especially USA
Hey @Marko, does Big Tech have any presence in Norway? I know there are some cities in Europe (eg. London, Amsterdam) where you can have a good compensation as a SWE by working for these companies (of course, the cost of living is generally pretty high as well)
consultation is going to pay you better it is not worth it in europe unless you get as an intern imo
Interesting, and congrats for all the videos Marko! Don't know if you've ever told this (or if it's for private reasons) but: why do you live in Norway? Would be an interesting context to add to the discussion :)

nice video! It's just very different the pay range of Europe countries from here in Brazil. For an example, the pay range from a Senior Software Engineer in Brazil is between 25k~30k dolars an year hahah. Things like this make me want to starting working remote to another countries
and stuff here is pretty expensive. A macbook here, for example, costs like my entire salary and more
Hey thanks for sharing! Yeah I know that pain, man! I hope things get better for you over there! There should be good opportunities for remote work also, I hope you can find a position 🙌
Greetings from Stockholm! While the salary figures are pretty much the same here, seems cost of living in Oslo is drastically higher!
In my experience, salaries in Sweden are significantly lower than in Norway. Could be different for consultants though.
@@AndyTutify yeah in my mind that's the case too.. I am in the same industry though with almost the same seniority level and the figures he mentioned are in the typical range here..

Koliko ti je trebalo otprilike vremena da dostigneš takvu nekakvu plaću, kakve su početne? Jesi radio u Srbiji u IT prije iseljenja ili? Sori za ovoliko pitanja, pozz i nastavi jako
Hej stan otprilike iznosi 50% neto zarade. Pocetne plate su nekih 20% nize, a od pocetne do moje plate treba nekih 3 - 4 godine. 😃 U Srbiji sam imao svoju firmu 😃

this guy does his job at kahoot and makes videos about it. that's the money he gets from his job + sponsorships and youtube ad revenue. a true genius.
How difficult is for a foreign to work in Norway? I visited Oslo back in March and I was curious about relocating. I work as an Sysadmin, the jobs in Norway for that position (and every tech job) requires to know Norwegian?
Hey that’s a great question! I guess for a sysadmin if you are working for a industry company they probably speak in Norwegian, but if it’s just a software company, it’s likely they speak in English. For example at my day job, we speak in English 😃
As someone who lives in Oslo that is an extremely expensive, city center lifestyle. I'm on a higher paid, more senior position and I live more simpler that that...
Average single senior developer wouldn't spend more than 10-15k rent, cook own food (6-8k month) and not drive
Wow, I expected a bit higher salaries, in Latvia they are close to this, altough a bit lower. Still, expected more of an gap.
crazy prices in norway wtf.... 1000 in netherlands a really good one., 600-800 decent appartement
Hey Marko! Have now entered the field of job hunting. Facing a million rejections, getting a few interviews but no call backs. Any advice? I'm not giving up, but it's frustrating honestly.
P.s Love your videos and absolutely love your comment section. Wholesome individuals.
Hi, it depends where you are.. are you a recent graduate or an experienced hire? Then how much experience and where do you live.
The basic requirements are to have a list of projects, such as a portfolio demonstrating your experience and capabilities.
When you get to the interviews, always ask for feedback even if you know you did well or didn't.
A million rejections are just a million ways to improve.
It's pretty silly, maybe, but welcome each rejection as a way to improve.
Compensate for the frustration by balancing your days. Exercise, a good diet, study times and good sleep all help out.
@@embracem7722 I'm graduating in a month, with a bit over a year in experience. I love in Nigeria, there are jobs here, but most tend towards senior roles. So I ventured out into fully remote jobs.
I have built a portfolio, working on more projects to show case my skills, thank you for that tip!
Highly noted!
Ahh this should be on a shirt😂, love the quote. Really though, thank you.
What an Absolutely Wholesome individual. Thank you so much for the advice! I wish you the Absolute best in your future adventures.
Hey guys thanks for the comments! When I look at the candidates we hired, a lot of them had a project or 2 to show that they worked on in their free time. That’s the best way to prepare for the interview, if you are just starting out, and you have no work experience
@vloginnwithekom I want to add; showing willingness to learn continuously, demonstrating 'thirst' for knowledge help out too. Read around trending and emerging topics in the field and come prepared to those interviews. Meeting their requirements is just the minimum - it's no longer enough - you must bring added value to that company you're going to. Knowledge is usually the most attractive quality aside from technical skills. Knowledge can be shared and grown to other individuals.
You're absolutely welcome. I understand your struggles. I graduated in 2019 and covid hit. I couldn't find a job for almost 2-3 years. But I quietly worked on projects (mostly small, but it accumulates) and developing other facets of myself. I failed many interviews but started to pass a few, chose to reject those because you learn what you want from a company.
Also, don't show any sign of desperation. Make it look like you have other options to them, this makes you attractive. (It's a bit like dating in that aspect)
@@withmarko Thanks for the tip Marko! Appreciate it. Will start working on some

I have another suggestion. I request video how software engineering salary vary compared to other professionals salaries in Norway and is it enough to live comfortably ?
Hi Marko! From Mongolia. Here is difficult for live and work. I earn 8000$/year(it is before tax and most of us earn 5000 in year) and cost 5000$(rent , food....).
Indeed😬
Hey thank you for sharing, I had a coworker from Mongolia in my previous company we were good friends 👍👍 I hope it gets better for you guys, but maybe you can also try remote work?
Bruh you need to relocate to Bulgaria if you work remotely, your expenses here will be less that 30K a year (apartment, food, all bills)
And we have beautiful nature and weather
nice all-ad video
850k for a small apartment?! Daaaaamn. With that money you can buy a 250sqm penthouse with a lake view, in Eastern Europe.
or in Spain
Hey thanks for the comments. I admit that apartment was on the more expensive side, you can find a similar place for maybe 500k further out. But still, yeah not why I don't live in Spain 😄

Great video, New software engineering videos. If you don't mind, I'd like to ask a dumb question why do most software engineers use MacBooks?
Hey thanks 😃 Hey good question! I used a number of different machines, on all operating systems, Win, Mac and Linux. But over time I settled on the Mac because of the hardware and build quality. 😃
Hi Marko, can you please clarify if that was a gross salary? And if so what percent do you pay as a tax?
Omg he’s actually handsome 😢❤
👍🏾😍😍
Nawh I'm jealous of you cause of the vacation benefits...and free education...and free healthcare....I hate it here in U.S.
❤
Regarding the country and payment. All are aligned with the cost of living. Back in the day, you get saved approximately the same amount at the end in every country. It's just a matter of the rent costs, grocery expenses, etc, etc. Therefore it's not objective enough to choose/compare countries just because an average payment is higher... You have as pricy expenses... There are many more important matters to consider when moving to another country. That's why I can't really understand these lists aka "The best country for software engineers in terms of the compensation"...
Hey that’s a very valid point 😃 At the end of the day a mortgage will take 30 years to pay off no matter what country you live in 😅 But it translates to everything else as you said 👍
@@withmarko yeee, mortgage is a dead end story 😄

I come from Indonesia, and I am very interested in working in Europe, but I don't know where to start to work in Europe because I have no connections or acquaintances there
I don't understand the issue. The salaries in the US are huge compared to Europe. But still Europeans end up better if you take the salary-cost of life ratio. So basically the huge difference in favor of the Americans, still falls short to the amount of money you have left after you finish the costs in Europe.
tips for fellow americans: don not get sick. ever.
Hey marko i am a computer science student i hope to buy m2 macbook air.but only 256 model available. Is it any problem if i use 256 model with an external ssd 🤔
Hey maybe you can look for an M1 with 512, it’s still an amazing machine 👍
Due to the NOK losing value against most major currencies it’s not fair to compair 1/10. 20k NOK is only 1.6k EURO instead of 2k EURO.
2:35 Then why not move to US? Since you have already migrated from another country? I am asking since i am planning to move abroad from a poor Balkan European country and I dont know where to go. To be honest, main goal for me is to maximize compensation. I think that Switzerland has the highest salaries in Europe (and of course the biggest cost of living) so maybe go there first and when I will have gained some experience go to the US? If anyone has similar dilemmas i would be glad to discuss it !
