Dwight was a huge fan of Tejano music star Flaco Jimenez so he asked him to play the accordion on this song when they recorded it. A few years ago we saw Dwight at Floore’s Country Store in Helotes, TX (where I lived) and he had Flaco come out on stage for this song. Flaco was late 80’s and could barely walk but DAMN he rocked that accordion!

One of my favorite Dwight songs. Dwight gets to sing with one of his heroes, the amazing Buck Owens. And yes their voices are fantastic together and they have similar singing styles and there is definitely a bit of Tex-Mex influence here with the accordion and the beat. In real life, Buck's mother brought him with her to Bakersfield California. They were essentially homeless for a bit and slept in railroad box cars. Ultimately he ended up being so popular and he had his own club there which was a huge deal. And then when he finally started touring, his opening act Red Simpson took over, and I love Red Simpson as well, he specializes in trucking music. He too has a song that tributes Buck.

I’d add only that part of what Dwight brought to country was 1) a return to the workingman/Bakersfield sound, 2) sex appeal (those jeans), 3) some really hard, driving, almost punk-rock-like rhythm. His lead guitarist at the time (whose name I can’t remember at the moment) was a big part of his sound.
"You don't know me but you don't like me" was aimed directly at Nashville/mainstream country because they were so resistant to accepting the Bakersfield sound. That is an accordion you hear because Mexican music was/is common in southern CA.
One of the reasons that the "Bakersfield sound" was different for its mix of culture and technology. Haggard and Owens represented the Oakie sound as many of them moved to farming towns in Californias central valley during the depression/ dust bowl. They brought the country sound that mixed with Mexican influenced music just when electric instruments were really getting popular. Mix country, mariachi, electric instruments and tough times....voila! Bakersfield sound.

As you listen to theses great Country Singers we grew up with, do you get tired or curious about us talking about "Hee Haw"???? You should watch a full episode sometime & let us know what you think about it. Many episodes as it was on for over 25 yrs. Many times they'd leave the mistakes in, especially with Junior Samples. They would give Junior hard words to say, but Not to make fun of him. Hee Haw had great music, biggest Country Stars & corny jokes that entertained us for an hour. WE LOVED IT!
Had the experience of working for Buck at his concert hall in Bakersfield when he was still alive. Kind of a weird guy, but VERY nice and treated everyone with respect if you treated him the same. I was always that punk rock/metal head type, but I knew sound and stage tech and while country music wasn't my lane at all I learned a lot of how to look at music that I didn't like and see the skill and technique that these artists do in their music is amazing. Also you aren't he first nor will you be the last to notice Dwight and his jeans.

I remember as a kid my uncle would get get drunk AF and bust out his accordion and just wail that mother. Everyone would start dancing and than soon after after all the adults would end up getting hammered and me and my brother would find our selfs sleeping over at our aunt and uncles place. Good times.

That is the sound of Country and Mexican folk and it make you wanna dance. I used to go to a bar in McCallen Texas called the Tejano saloon and what a trip that was... Mostly Mexican people, but they knew how to dress and how to dance!

"The Bakersfield Sound"! I think the "short guitar" is an electric mandolin which produces those high pitch notes at the start.
Great song, fun (and sensible!) reactions. Lots of good info in the comments about music history and influences too. I’d add only that part of what Dwight brought to country was 1) a return to the workingman/Bakersfield sound, 2) sex appeal (those jeans), 3) some really hard, driving, almost punk-rock-like rhythm. His lead guitarist at the time (whose name I can’t remember at the moment) was a big part of his sound.

"You don't know me but you don't like me" was aimed directly at Nashville/mainstream country because they were so resistant to accepting the Bakersfield sound. That is an accordion you hear because Mexican music was/is common in southern CA.
Buck Owens created the Bakersfield Sound to which Dwight was drawn.
One of the reasons that the "Bakersfield sound" was different for its mix of culture and technology. Haggard and Owens represented the Oakie sound as many of them moved to farming towns in Californias central valley during the depression/ dust bowl. They brought the country sound that mixed with Mexican influenced music just when electric instruments were really getting popular. Mix country, mariachi, electric instruments and tough times....voila! Bakersfield sound.
Buck Owens came out of retirement to do this song with Dwight Yoakam. Watched Buck with Roy Clark host "Hee Haw" every Saturday night. As you listen to theses great Country Singers we grew up with, do you get tired or curious about us talking about "Hee Haw"???? You should watch a full episode sometime & let us know what you think about it. Many episodes as it was on for over 25 yrs. Many times they'd leave the mistakes in, especially with Junior Samples. They would give Junior hard words to say, but Not to make fun of him. Hee Haw had great music, biggest Country Stars & corny jokes that entertained us for an hour. WE LOVED IT!
Had the experience of working for Buck at his concert hall in Bakersfield when he was still alive. Kind of a weird guy, but VERY nice and treated everyone with respect if you treated him the same. I was always that punk rock/metal head type, but I knew sound and stage tech and while country music wasn't my lane at all I learned a lot of how to look at music that I didn't like and see the skill and technique that these artists do in their music is amazing. Also you aren't he first nor will you be the last to notice Dwight and his jeans.
That accordion is played by the legendary Flaco Jimenez. His style is so immediately recognizable.

I remember as a kid my uncle would get get drunk AF and bust out his accordion and just wail that mother. Everyone would start dancing and than soon after after all the adults would end up getting hammered and me and my brother would find our selfs sleeping over at our aunt and uncles place. Good times.

welcome to south texas darlin, that sound? That is Tejano music meets country. I lived in Texas for three years, seven miles from mexico. That is the sound of Country and Mexican folk and it make you wanna dance. I used to go to a bar in McCallen Texas called the Tejano saloon and what a trip that was... Mostly Mexican people, but they knew how to dress and how to dance!
