Buck Owens is a country legend. He was one of the hosts of Hee Haw for years and had many hits in country. He was a superstar in country music. 💖💖💖 Two of Bucks hits are Act naturally and Together again. 💞💞💞
Although I do dislike activating old threads; Please. More Buck Owens! Dwight is talented. Definitely! And he is a fan of Buck Owens for a good reason.
Buck Owens started out in the late 40s, he was big in the 50s...and a giant in the 60s. Yoakam had always admired Owens and brought him out of retirement in the 80s which gave him (Owens) a second carreer, and they became very close friends. You should watch Yoakam in Owens' funeral...he can hardly speak due to the pain of losing his friend.
I was in 1st grade when tiger by the tail came out. I remember telling my mother that's pretty dumb of him .my mom just laughed . I'm thinking the man's about to be killed and my mom thinks it's funny
Streets of Bakersfield was written by my cousin Homer Joy who actually wrote the song in Bucks waiting room while waiting to see him. Homer had a platinum Record with a picture of him and Dwight holding the record in Homers studio outside of Spokane Washington.
Actually Tommy Leonard Collins created the Bakerfield sound along with Merle Haggard and Buck Owens. Tommy Leonard Collins was the first one that made the Bakerfield sound
@@thomasstevens1873 Buck was a protege of Rose Maddox of The Maddox Brothers and Rose. Bob Wills bought a ranch in Visalia after WWII and played weekends in Bakersfield while rebuilding his band, inspiring Buck, Merle, Tommy Collins, Wynn Stewart and others. Buck and Merle were big influences on SF psychedelic bands.
@@davidalexander828 Merle Haggard sang in the Bakersfield style but it was established before he was ever a part of it. In fact on Merle’s early recordings he sounds like a Marty Robins impersonator. You should really check out the whole first season of Cocaine and Rhinestones podcast.
This sound is a fusion of Mexican "Norteno" or "Conjunto" mixed with a rockabilly country flavor. The accordion u hear is none other than world-renown Mexican musician 'Flaco' Jimenez. He also plays on several Yoakam hits most notably "She wore Red Dresses". Being in California, of course, Buck Owens would know of the Mexican genre. He was instrumental in bringing the sound to mainstream. He influenced artist like Dwight Yoakam. That Mexican "sound" , like Banda, was itself influenced by German music
I'm pleased to see the great Flaco Jimenéz getting credit for his accordian playing. Thank you. I also loved his playing on Ry Cooder's album Chicken Skin Music, especially He'll Have To Go and Stand By Me.
In the '50s and '60s Bakersfield was the West Coast center of country music. The "Bakersfield Sound" as it was dubbed borrowed heavily on both Mexican cowboy style music and early rock and roll. It was about the first country genre to make extensive use of electric guitars. Buck Owen was one of the founders and had 21 #1 hits, passing away in 2006. Although Dwight was from Kentucky and Ohio he embraced the Bakersfield Sound when he entered the country music industry in the early '80s.
Dwight Yoakam is also an actor. He is in the movies Slingblade , Panic room and Crank among others. I grew up listening to his music and about freaked when I seen him in a movie.
I watched Buck on Hee Haw every week!!! Watched it with my grandpa!!! And Dwight is one of my favorites back in the day!!! Him and his tight jeans and leather pants!!!!
Buck Owens is a member of the Country Music Royalty and is a founders of The Bakersfield Sound(of country music) which you just listened to. Also check Dwight Yoakam singing "Buenas Noches form a Lonely Room (She wore red dresses)"

Dwight Yoakum has such a strong, nostalgic country sound and it always makes me think of the family run country shows in Branson MO in the 80s and 90s when I was a kid vacationing every year. It’s so much different now, both Branson and country music and I truly miss that sound.
Yeah, Buck was an old-time country legend. Absolutely worth listening to. He got started back in the 50s, & would be 90 now, if he was still with us. One of his biggest hits was, 'Act Naturally', which was covered by the Beatles. Ringo sang lead on that, & in the late 1980s, Buck & Ringo got together & did a duet cover of, 'Act Naturally'. Buck was always blurring the line between country & rock, & I saw an interview in which he insisted that he was a country artist, & would never sing anything that wasn't country. Then he picked up his guitar, & started rockin' out to a country-ish version of a Chuck Berry tune. I absolutely love Buck's stuff.
Buck Owens was a country legend and one of the architects of the “Bakersfield” sound. He also owned the Crystal Palace in Bakersfield. Lots of big names from all genres have played the Palace!

Favorite Buck Owens songs: Under The Influence Of Love (the steel guitar intro is INSANE on that song!) Together Again Tiger By The Tail (fun song) Cryin' Time (Ray Charles does an excellent cover of this song) Think Of Me When You're Lonely Under Your Spell Again Only You
This song is a great introduction to American popular music. Country has its roots in African and European roots coming together and here you have the Mexican sound that found its way into country music as country music moved west.
If you want to know about Buck Owens you should watch his funeral on CZcams. Not only did Dwight Perform, but Brad Paisley, and Trace Atkins did as well. Even Garth Brooks was there, though he didn't perform. Buck Owen was huge in 60's. He actually knocked the Beatles off the charts. The Beatles were fans as well and recorded Bucks music. Buck Owens and Buckaroos performed at Carnegie Hall and around the world including Japan and London. I'm from Bakersfield, so I am very familiar with the Bakersfield Sound, which was pioneered by Buck and Merle Haggard.
I've been a Bakersfield girl for years. While the song isn't overly impressive musically - it is fun! My mom, grandpa, and I used to jam sometimes - this was usually on the list of songs we'd do. He passed several years ago, but left good memories - absolutely!
Oh i have watched this clip so much and I am so glad someone has decided to react to this. I love the song and absolutely love the clip that goes with it
If you like upbeat Country, Western swing music, then may I suggest the 1985 Vevo video of The ( Gatlin Brothers.) " The Lady Takes The Cowboy Everytime." Or the 1987 Rodney Crowell song" " She's Crazy For Leaving." Or Dwight Yoakam's cover of the old Elvis Presley tune; " Little Sister."
It actually comes from the Czech Polka originally, which was influential in both Ranchero (Later Norteño and Conjunto Tejano) music, and to a lesser extent in Red dirt (Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico Country) brought by the large number of German, Polish and Czech immigrants who helped settle the Western South and parts of the Southwest, as well as Northeastern Mexico. (Central European ancestry and Surnames remain Common in Mexico's northeast, but the cultural influence of those groups punched far above their demographic weight). Eventually, through Red Dirt and Tejano music's influence, polka was notably influential on the Bakersfield Sound.
Sooooo Beautiful! Good country is great, but bad country is very bad! Dwight and Buck is good country! 🤠👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 That is what is referred to as the Bakersfield sound!
Fun fact, they didn’t film this video in Bakersfield. They filmed it in Delano, CA. It’s a predominant Mexican town 30 minutes north of Bakersfield. Fun fact 2, my uncle is on the accordion (the mariachi feel you describe)
Buck Owen's was a huge fixture in Bakersfield. I lived there from 85-88 ,when as someone who was under 21 ,could be quite boring. It was a place that you both loved and hated the same.
This song has Norteno/Tejano music influence in it. Dwight Yoakum is huge fan of Flaco Jimenez so he asked him to play the accordion on this recording.

Rumor has it that Buck missed his cue when he turns around at the lunch counter. Dwights’ reaction was so hilarious that they left it in. Go back and watch again.
Here's something funny. One of my teachers was saying that the common image of country western is of the singing cowboy , playing his guitar. Really, the guitar was more of a Mexican influence. Most country music was based on the bagpipe, that is, with a drone behind it, like an autoharp. I was laughing about the mental image of a cowboy on his horse, playing his bagpipe.

Buck Owens: Act Naturally, My Heart Skips a Beat, Together Again, Love's Gonna Live Here. Also Hee Haw.
Really like the 'Act Naturally' Buck did along with Ringo Starr.
You get a Mariachi feel because the influence of it is present in the "Bakersfield" branch of country.
Damn right, nothing like that Bakersfield sound. Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Dwight Yoakam, all great.
More of a norteña feel, the polka influence from the northern part of mexico where many German immigrants settled. (as well as south Texas).
Buck was on Hee-Haw and he had a hit called "Tiger by the tail ".Dwight has a really good one called "I sang Dixie as he died "
