Rodriquez knew he was going to Michigan during that last game and didn’t give a rats ass if we won. Those players had worked soooo hard to get to a national championship. They didn’t deserve the way they and the fans were sooooo disrespected by him. Hell yes, he owed us an explanation. He gave us NOTHING. Walked out and left us all hanging. I believe in Karma and when it came around to visit Ol Rich Rod, he got paid back . Michigan booted him and he left Arizona in disgrace because he couldn’t keep his pants zipped causing him to never be considered by a respected big time college anywhere in this country. He got EXACTLY WHAT HE DESERVED..He is an embarrassment to West Virginia. I don’t know of anyone who doesn’t feel this way about him. So go to Louisiana and stay there. You’re not respected or wanted here in WVA.

@@carolgarten-long7878 The way he left was wrong. However the blame goes on Mike Garrison(former WVU Prez) and Ed Pastilong(former AD). They made little to no effort at fundraising. A booster of WVU Ken Kendrick had an evaluation on the Athletic Dept. Over 50 discrepansies were found that could be easily fixed with little to no $. His assesment was "a 50 million a year operation was ran like a dry cleaning store" That was a fair summary of what the WVU AD was during that time.

Great interview! As a WVU fan, this was the bit of information we needed to hear after the Pitt loss and Rodriguez's move from WVU to Michigan in 2007. There was no resolution from Rodriguez's side of the story or from the WVU administration's side of the story, as to why Rodriguez abruptly left for Michigan. Even the WVU football team had no certain idea as to why he left, considering McAfee's surprise by Rodriguez's explanation. It shouldn't have taken 13+ years for Rodriguez, former WVU president Michael Garrison, former WVU AD Ed Pastilong, or anyone else close to the situation to give a proper reason as to why the Rodriguez/WVU split even happened. I think Rich Rodriguez and Pat McAfee were very genuine and open throughout this interview. My criticisms of Coach Rodriguez's departure from WVU have softened after watching this interview... especially knowing it potentially only required $50,000 more for his coaching staff's payroll for Rodriguez to stay on at WVU, yet also knowing the hypocrisy of then WVU President, Michael Garrison allowing a degree to be given to Mylan Pharmaceutical's Heather Bresch (current WV Senator, Joe Manchin's daughter) without earning the required credits for the degree. That shows that the WVU administration was very much potentially at fault for a lot of the school's downfall within a one year span of Garrison's tenure as president.

Even more funny thing is, they were both born & raised here in Marion County/WV. Funnier still, Jimbo Fisher hails from Harrison County, just one county south. At one point, these three were the HCs of Michigan, Florida St, Alabama, not too shabby. Ironically, WVU was probably still better than all three of those squads during those couple years.

Rich Rod is definitely an innovator and the godfather of the spread offense.. He should be in the college football hall of fame for his contributions that revolutionized the game.. There hasn't been a change as significant as the introduction of the spread since the days of the single wing.. I don't see how you can keep him out of the Hall of Fame..

I went to Mizzou. For a brief moment, I thought WVU and Mizzou were going to play for the National Championship that year. We lost to OU in the Big 12 Title game. Good memories.

I remember that year that Mizzou got a raw deal because they played 1 extra game (B12 championship) than OSU, who didn't have a B10 championship. Had Mizzou not played that game, they would be in the title. But losing again ranked OSU over them. Wasn't fair, IMO.

I was like 12 when West Virginia and Pat White were blowing up the NCAA. I didn't give 2 shits about college football before that year, but was all of a sudden pumped to watch Sportscenter highlights of the Mountaineers. All these years later and the brand of WV football gets me paying attention when I see them flash across a restaurant TV to see if they've got the same attitude and highlight factory still going

Awesome interview...gives ya a new perspective on Rich Rod. I have no dog in this fight, Im a Colorado fan. But I loved that team, with White, Slayton,Noel...I was pulling hard for them to win that game-they wouldve played for national title, had they won, I think? I think that Pittsburgh team wasnt very good also...was a huge upset.
But that WVa team was fun a lot of fun to watch. I heard a few WVa fans, who thought he sabotaged that game to make it easier for him to go to Michigan somehow. Never made sense to me back then,& even less sense now. Who would sabotage your own chance at a national championship ring,& how would that make it easier, or better for him to leave?

I can tell ya firsthand living in Western Maryland just 1 hour from Morgantown that the Rich Rod Era brought a crazy amount of sensationalism to the Tri-state area. Newly-minted WVU fans came out of everywhere to join in the fun. It was a great time to be a Mountaineer and brought so much economic upside to everyplace within a 100 mile radius of Morgantown. It was electrifying being at Mountaineer stadium on a Saturday then.

Coach Rich Rod was the greatest thing that ever happened at WVU, I was born bleeding blue and old gold and I love every team we’ve ever had but coach Rod gave this state and everything and everyone in it hope, pride, faith and pure joy in our football team it broke a lot of hearts when he left and to this day I love the man for what he accomplished here in West by God Virginia he could have been governor at one time if he wanted it, the thing about WVU football is that it is everything to the the amazing people from WV and he took us to heights that we had never seen before and I for one will always and forever be grateful for what he his staff and most importantly the players for all they did for us and I wish he was back bc he belongs to us we love him and wish him nothing but the best thank you Coach Rod and good luck brother country roads take you home to the place you belong go eers
