Styx had brothers on bass and drums, as well. Never occurred to me how that might have helped cement the rhythm section of that band. They started playing together as teens! The story goes that Denis was walking by the house and heard them playing- and was stopped in his tracks. Then had to go in, introduce himself, and ask if they wanted to form a band, lol.
A great rhythm section is so important- it makes everyone sound better.

This was great. May I throw in as a 68 yr old, I really love hearing organ in rock songs. It's rich and warm. My favorite time working at a music shop was when the piano tuner took time out to play some organ drawing my attention to the Leslie speakers spinning slowly, fast or not at all. I'd wondered how the intensity and swells got in there. Thanks for this analysis, Fil: new band to me.

Thanks Fil, this is my first listening to this band and I'm planning to listen to more as soon as I finish this comment and check the 'thumbs up' icon. My first impression is that they don't sound like anyone else and that's a good thing if they have a signature sound that stands out. I 'do' think the singer's voice has kind of a Neil Young quality to it, but it's like hearing NY doing something he's never done and that's a treat.

As the song nears the end it almost sounds like it is ready to speed up and open up an opportunity for faster lead solos. They could certainly add it. Really gifted guys.

Nice find, Fil. I've not heard of this band before but glad you posted it as I like them a lot. You have such a great ear. Apropos of nothing, the name reminds me of a band called Blackberry Winter that was the only band that came to play in the small town where I'm from (not counting local area bands, of course). One of the first, if not the first concert I ever saw. They were pretty good but never hit it big--maybe because they mostly did covers, I think, but they hold a special place in my memory. A google search shows they have been around since the sixties--"before the Beatles"--but hung it up around 2008. Not to be confused with a folk/bluegrass band of the same name that is still around.

Yeah, he's got a really good voice for sure and I like that he has the ability and guts to let his voice ring out. Nice gritty rough rock and boy you nailed it Fil. Bands like this can and do rock it live because that's how rock sounds best.

For an energetic song by a southern rock band with a female slide guitarist see "Raging Slab In Amsterdam '93 Part 5 ("Anywhere But Here")". She played a guitar shaped like a map of the U.S.. Unfortunately she died last year. When I first heard this band I thought they should be a lot better known than they were.

First time I heard Green Day I thought "Now here is a band that understands the value of vocal harmonizing." It made them stand out from the rest.
