I went to see this guy with ZZ Top back in July. He absolutly stole the show. He's in his 70s still running around, jumping, and singing and playing his ass off. What a performer. One of the best shows I've been to in some time

CCR was one of the bands of my 'formative' years. Fortunate Son vocalized some of the rage that a lot of guys felt during the Vietnam years. It's too bad he got mired in a contractual swamp (they literally tried to steal his vocal style!) , but he's endured.

Saw JF a couple of years ago. Was expecting a bit of nostalgia for the songs I loved but assumed diminished presentation because of his age. I was blown away. One of the better shows I have been to in years. Not only was his guitar work still very good but his voice blew me away. He threw one hit after another at you. Barely time to catch your breath. Fogerty is definitely a legend and he seemingly never disappoints with his live performances. I saw him perform at a large AIDS benefit concert in Oakland, CA back in 1987 with Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir (Grateful Dead) and they played a bunch of CCR tunes. I think it was the first or second time he had played any CCR tunes live since CCR broke up in the early '70s. Needless to say it was an epic and thrilling performance. He sounded fantastic and completely rocked the place. Amazing that he is still going strong. If he comes around again I will have to go see him. Not many of these guys left!

Fil, thanks for featuring John and pointing out his shiny elements. He's truly a legend here in the SF Bay area, and I was playing in bands at the same time that Credence was making big waves. If you look deeper into his history, you'll learn that John literally got screwed out of his own publishing and even lost the rights to perform his own compositions for years. It is one of the most heartbreaking music industry stories, and there was an evil predator/producer at the "heart of the breaking".

Biggest band in the world 69-72. Pity his career was waylaid by bad management and band squabbles. The biggest band at Woodstock, left out of the movie due to a bad drum mike and a demanding manager.. It's still awesome though and more atmospheric and involving than most performances, like Joplin ended up on cutting room floor.

      @hungfao Před 5 lety +1

@@DC-js4gk Yeah, that happened to a lot of bands back then. Elements in the music industry had found a new way to make a lot of money and cheat the artist. They still do as a matter of fact. My wife and I have flirted with some well-known names in the industry over the decades and I've kind of soured to it after hearing present day horror stories. We've written a couple of really well-received songs and have been recipients of generosity by a few producers who want us to 'do more' but....I can see why things like Pete Ham can happen.

@@hungfao Very true and the songs by Badfinger (terrible name IMO) are almost unlistenable for me, knowing what transpired. The songs have a genuine intensity that most pop rock lacks. Yeah CCR is a band w a very strange history of being screwed over that endures amongst remaining band members to this day. Imagine being the biggest band and being told "No that deal is no good you're not selling yourself out over this movie" Oh yeah there's also the issue of immortality etc a la Joe Cocker Santana etc. Talk about short term thinking. Good luck w yr music. It's a jungle out there, I have friends who perform and promoters and venues regularly rip them off in various ways. Their most rewarding gig recently was a free gig as the venue doesn't even pay bands to perform any more. I was a freelance journo and the same thing happened there. The big guys stopped paying big money sending the pros scurrying to the corporate sector. So now they are spreading fake news for the same people and the Indies have been pushed into blogging and other waffle. Crazy

@@DC-js4gk Of interest, someone my wife knows wrote a song that became a big hit after someone recorded it. It apparently sold really well. For his trouble he got $218.00. Everyone else got wealthy. I can't say who it is because of possible pending litigation nor do I know the details of what his contract. But it is discouraging. I wanted to be one of those guys who writes songs for other people. Like you said - a jungle.

OK. It's great to see John still up and running.
This is my history with Creedence Clearwater Revival. Back in the 60s I was asked by a friend to help find a band for his Church Teen Dance. Somehow I found a manager to help me. I booked a group called the Golliwogs. I paid them $75. to lug their gear from El Cerrito about 50 miles away, play for 4 hours for a bunch of very socially awkward boys and girls and drive home. They were really, ugh not exceptional at all. Their music was early 60s style. Not more than a year later a new group suddenly broke out called Creedence Clearwater Revival...and they were GOOD....SO GOOD. I'm a huge fan of John Fogerty and have been since. Thanks Fil. Thanks for doing John Fogerty on your channel! You got to the point with him and his qualities! I appreciate that! I got interested in music with the Beatles in the mid-60s. I could play a little, and I'd taken a course in playing mandolin, but it wasn't anything serious. So when I heard songs like Day Tripper, I Feel Fine, and Rain, my eyebrows rose! (Some 40 years later, I found out what fascinated me in those songs - the riffs). In 1971 I heard the first CCR song. That blew my brains out! Then I decided I'd be a musician too. I got my first guitar. On the path, I started to write songs and later to arrange them. My master in all these fields was, of course, John Fogerty. This particular song is a true masterpiece! Everything is in its place. Changing even the smallest thing would destroy it. There has to be the right piano sound, the saxophone and the lot. The sax solo, played by John, is magic! Also, Doug Clifford's drumming is perfect. But then, he always played the drums perfectly.

Spot on, Fil! You're so right about the guitar as a voice. My brother and I used to sing lead guitar parts from our favorite songs back in the day, like Jimi Hendrix' Little Wing. Sang them from memory while working in a vineyard. Some of the others laughed but we weren't embarrassed. Thanks for totally excellent breakdowns, Fil!

I was in the recording end of the music industry for a long time. I had a major studio with 3 studios in the complex. One day we got a call from John's brother about his wanting to record a demo. Why would a guy who has been out of the loop for so many years? That was 1985 after all the lawsuits with his old label, for years never performing the songs the label had rights to. We surely wanted to work with him, he was everyone's hero but did this mean he was returning to performing?
We did not do demos, there were lots of small studios that specialized in it. We only did albums but for him, why not? He booked the smallest room and his brother loaded in all his amps, drums and guitars, basses etc and set them in a circle with a high chair in the center. The next day John appeared. Even though he lived just 12 miles from the studio no one has seen him for years. He had been working on this songs for years, alone in his garage, until he finally broke his old contract in court.
He played every instrument, including drums on the "demo" and he kept extending it to eventually add up to 13 tracks when demos were usually 3-4 songs. On the last day of mix, he asked for the 2in. and master 2 track master tapes to be locked in the vault and had us create a cassette copy. He said he would be back in a day, going to LA and come back to load out the equipment. Later when he returned, he set up in the kitchen and as had been a usually activity during breaks during he recording, where everyone else in the other rooms, Heart and Journey, when not needed in the studio would gather around and listen to John's stories and what a storyteller he was about the Credence days. I never saw anyone get so much sincere respect as John did, no one dislikes him as a person or as a writer/player.
A day later he came to explain his absence. He took that cassette take and few down to LA and walked into the president of Warner Bros and told him he had a tape to play, and if he wanted it, tell him but the tape can't leave John's control. John gave him a short time to decide any Lenny W. only took minutes, John did not want A&R, lawyers or anyone else to hear the demo. a 13 song demo. Two hours later he walked out of his office with an advance check for $2.4 million and that tape in the vault was not a demo but the full finished "Center Field" album. That was the first record Warner ever pressed platinum. John was back! My own experience of him was that he was the warm, friendly, humble and the best storyteller ever. He called a week later and said the buzz in LA was all over it and for him the biggest thrill was being asked to do the late night shows on TV. Great guy, great talent.

Fil, saw him in 2016 and he just blew me away, brought me to my childhood listening to CCR on AM radio. Interestingly, the "kid" playing the rickenbacker is his oldest son who is now a part of his band full time. When I saw them, he and his son did a dual lead back and forth with matching black Gibson les Paul's. You are right, about John connecting with the audience. If you go back to their heyday in 1968-70, they put out like five albums in that time along with constant touring. Just amazing. Thanks Fil

John Fogerty's songs are almost instantly recognizable, it just takes maybe just 3 notes and there it is! I saw him introduced at a televised concert in 2017, by Brad Paisley, who mentioned this fact (I didn't think of it all by myself). He gestured to John with a "go ahead" sign, and sure enough, it took 3 notes, everybody knew the song and started laughing because they did! ALL his fine songs are like that and they all sound good to me. Great appreciation and commentary of his many serious skills. Well done!

@@futuredirected Glad to hear that's your point of view. Americans all too often have this unbelievable worship of their troops, and I find it sickening.
Vietnam was different; as you say, those kids were forced to go. But after they got back and were mistreated, to make up for it, soldiers are now treated
as gods on Earth. WTF? How sick is that? It's one thing defending your country on your own soil. But when you send your "heroes" all over the world
to defend your business interests, that's where I draw the goddamn line. That's NOT heroic. Being a hero means doing something dangerous you don't want to do,
that benefits others, rather than yourself. And I don't see how benefiting your own people while slaughtering men, women and children on the other side, makes
anyone a hero. A hypocritical hero, at best. There are no heroes in war. It's just business and tragic waste. And people shouldn't be celebrated for fighting in them.
WWII was a necessary war. The future of the world was on the line. The soldiers who fought against the Nazis, THEY were heroes.
But there hasn't been a war like that since. And hopefully there'll never be another one like it.

By the way, the CCR Live at Woodstock 1969 CD has just been released. It's the best live stuff from them I've ever heard. A great set, despite early technical problems, which you can hear John complaining about after each of the first two songs. Check it out folks. I can hear clearly for the first time Tom Fogerty's rhythm playing live - more so than other live CCR performances where it was not in the mix enough. And John Fogerty's voice is strong and sounds just like the recordings.
