F1 and F2/GP2 back then isn't cheap, and Pertamina both funding Haryanto and Gelael because of course they are Indonesian, Gelael can afford racing in GP2 later F2 until 2020 because her father funding him more than Pertamina and BNI could afford, of course Ricardo Gelael owns KFC rights in Indonesia. And Haryanto's father company, Kiky already in dire situation after fire back 2015 and F1 definetly way more expensive than GP2/F2 plus Manor also need funding to stay afloat at F1 2015 season.

I've been following him since 2009, read on the newspaper about his wildcard entry at Formula BMW Europe at Monza where he didn't finish a race due to suspension damage and Felipe Nasr won the race. Then he competed on the higher levels.
In terms of lower formulae results, it was good but not at Grosjean, Hulkenberg or Leclerc level where they won titles every year. Some people say in mid 2010s GP2 weren't as strong as other seasons which they used it as a reason to why Joleon Palmer won the title but as said here he didn't get a competitive team until his final season.
I'm proud of him, he's our best driver, statistically, and the first to race in F1 for our country. I admit I cried happy tears when he was announced he'd race for Manor. It was a dream come true for us Indonesian motorsport fans. But I'm a bit disappointed that he hasn't been racing a lot now. If only he signed for FE in 2017 or Superformula, not just testing. The team in GT series was found by his friend successful businessman David Tjiptobiantoro and Singaporean driver Gregory Teo. Sadly, they didn't race in Asian Le Mans earlier this year, I don't know why.
Another thing I'm really disappointed of is that lack of concept and understanding among the people in general discredited him, very bad. People who had no idea of F1 screamed his participation was a waste of money, while they thought it should have been allocated for donations, building bridges, schools, and everything that had no correlations at all. He was sponsored by Pertamina, the state owned petrol company, they weren't the Social Affair ministry who were responsible of helping the poor. See how absurd that was. Too bad for him, the media highlighted that matter and the people mostly failed to understand as they largely only read the headlines of each articles. That's why some people falsely don't like him.

As indonesian i agree with this video.
His time in F2 is short, so its no surprising that he not experience well before go into f1. Also his unlucky destiny also giving strain in his career. Another potent is sean gelael, but he still in f3 class and not score much better.
    .
Car Racing are expensive things here. Even local tournament spend lot of money for average indonesian. And sentul is the only place to compete. But at least we have history in f1🤣

I’d love to see a video about what happened with Wehrlein. Obviously I know that he’s doing a good job in Formula E but he did wonders in that Manor and I’ve always wondered why F1 didn’t really work out for him

Wehrlein was originally set to drive with Mercedes for 2017, But eventually Bottas was picked because Bottas has more experience.
It's a shame that Wehrlein's F1 Career ended early. He's the sole point scored on Manor 2016 and Sauber 2017.

Other than getting too much pressure as the first f1 driver in a country that hard to be said as generously supporting any kinds of sports, let alone providing the right team, Rio's personality is too much like "a nice guy next door", probably much less ambitious than his f1 peers. Yes, he's an amazing buddy, but in a competition? It's gonna be okay if he has other big life goals. He's from a good family, after all, he will still be taken care of. He just needs to really fight for what he wants, including f1, if he's still REALLY interested in. You know the old proverb: there is a will, there is a way. But yeah, I love the way you answer the questions in the end.
