Fun fact about the Sounders is when they entered the MLS in 2009 they were forced to artificially reduce seating capacity for years because they were able to sell out the NFL stadium every week with about 60k but were only allowed 40k tickets to keep it "fair" which was stupid

There was a sponsorship issue too as XBox was paying for the coverings on the upper bowl which needed to be removed for full stadium games. But nowadays if a game warrants a full stadium (most recently in May 2022 when Seattle won the CONCACAF Champions League in front of 68,700 fans) then it's opened up. I have been to two Seattle-Portland matches with 66,000 plus fans and those are always the best!

This video only briefly shows the third red card given (to Clint Dempsey) during the US Open Cup match in 2015...known as the Red Card Wedding around here, Sounders finished the game with seven men. Dempsey's red card was for tearing up the referee's notebook. 😈 It was the craziest sporting event I've ever witnessed.

The rivalry is so chaotic cause the cities are right next to each other(4 hour drive or so). Seattle has more mls cups so far(Sounders for life).
I played goalie for my high school team (in the seattle area) and even just getting your hand on the ball to deflect it is such a great feeling. I also play forward so I know how to intimidate opponents lol. The PNW definitely has a strong soccer culture with this rivalry. I think the fact the Sounders play in the same stadium as the Seahawks makes all the sports franchises so much more connected in this city

Soccer/association football is now the only major sport in Portland during the summer and fall after the Portland Beavers (AAA baseball, one level below MLB) left in 2010. The only other major team in Portland besides the Timbers is the Portland Trail Blazers (NBA).
It is also appropriate that soccer is so popular in this region, as Seattle has the closest climate to the UK of any major city in the United States (albeit with dry summers).

for that playoff series with Portland, away goals did count. However, they only counted for regulation. Once regulation of both matches was over, away goals didn't count any more. They were tied on aggregate after regulation of the second leg, tied on away goals as well, so it went to extra time. However, away goals in extra time didn't count towards the tiebreaker. Thus they went to a shootout.

This dates back to the old NASL. The league folded as a major professional entity decades ago (very early 1980s?). Timbers, Sounders, and Whitecaps are legacy teams from those days.
NASL suffered from over-expansion and poor financial management, not quality. At one time, the league included Pelé, Johann Cruyff, Bobby Moore, Giorgio Chinaglia, and many, many other legendary players.
I once read that the estimated value of New York Cosmos, if the players on that club were paid today's market value, would have been well over $1 billion.
I began playing as a very young child in the mid-1970s. NASL games on television were mandatory at our house. Of course, given my age, Pelé was the only player I knew. Ergo, I declared myself a Cosmos fan without hesitation.

As a Timbers fan, I can confirm that both Seattle and Portland are in the heart of the American Soccer Mecca and whenever there is a match between the two, its insane. You've got to realize that Portland has both the Nike World HQ and the Addidas NA HQ. Not to mention it is probably one of the greatest talent pools for Womens football in the entire world with the Portland Pilots and the Thorns being a massive breeding ground for talent to feed the US Womens National team, who dominate the FIFA Womens World Cup. The atmosphere is about as close as you can get to European Football rivalries.

Late to the show. Nice reaction video and yes, Portland v Seattle is a genuine derby experience. The visceral disdain between the cities sports team goes back over 100 years through hockey (professional in many incarnations to the WHL now), baseball (PCL), basketball and of course association football. I don't intend to take away from your video by any means but if you get a chance check out Copa90's Battle of Cascadia doc from a few years ago. You'll really like the chainsaw even more.
I didn't read many of the comments so this may have been mentioned but the log ceremony was started by the NASL Timbers "mascot" Timber Jim. He would cut a slab off for each goal and one for a clean sheet, then present them to the players after the match. Timber Joey has since taken over that role prior to the Timbers moving up to MLS when they were still in the 2nd division.
Prost and again, really nice video

I live kinda right in the middle of them on the Washington side of I-5 but I have always rooted for Portland teams when they played Seattle because I was born in Portland and it's a bit closer, so I've to more Trail Blazers and Timbers games than Sonics and Sounders. Seattle has always and will always be my NFL team though. As a blazers fan I hated the Sonics but when the MLS came around I had a hard time choosing sides because I have loyalties in both cities. I eventually just decided root for the underdog and cheer for whatever teams stadium I'm in. Vancouver, BC, Canada is great too, The Whitecaps. Big fan. That whole area up I-5 too the east and west we refer to as Cascadia... if you're from here. It's where the Cascade Mountains run. Amazing for sports fans. We don't have the most teams but our fans are amazing and when we're good, we're really good.

12:00 So in the MLS, they do count away goals but away goals scored in extra time aren’t counted. For example Portland won 2-1 in Portland in the first leg, then Seattle took the game to extra time leading 2-1 in Seattle in the second leg. Now full time is 3-3 agg. Now if Portland scores another to make it 4-3 agg on extra time after the 90 minutes are up and Seattle ties the game to make it 4-4 agg then they go to penalties. If that makes sense

So much of the hatred and vitriol between these teams come from the cities themselves, like the 3 cities in Cascadia are quite similar and so the rivalries date back to before statehood (mid 1800s). The PNW is also one of the places that has had soccer for some of the longest time in the US. Also, it'd be like 5 hours to drive from Vancouver to Portland (not including border traffic) and Seattle is almost exactly in the middle.

Galaxy have a good loyal fan base and LAFC is just a bunch of whinny b words. Lafc fans always talk crap but their team ALWAYS shits the bed. From a Sounders fan btw.

Timbers fan here. If I remember correctly, the confusion in the game was because the extra weight given to away goals is only during the regulation 90. They were even at the end of regulation, and then both teams scored during the extra period. Instead of bumping the Timbers ahead because they now had more away goals, it just tied things up again. That's why the game ended in a penalty shootout. Not sure if that rule is just US soccer or more universal; the circumstances are specific and unusual enough that the distinction would rarely come into play.

    In North America?? ❌ *NO.*
Youve got a lot to learn...
**CHIVAS vs AMERICA** dwarfs every other Football-Soccer Rivalry in North America. In Mexico its known as "The Derby of Derbies" ( _El Clasico de Clasicos_ )
Portland vs Seattle biggest In the U.S.? Sure
BUT DEFINITELY NOT in North America, that's plan silly.
