Aircraft Starter Motor Replacement not required!

  • It is not always necessary to replace your Lycoming engine starter just because its not staying engaged or is failing to engage the ring gear. A replacement of the Bendix could fix all your problems. Too often a very expensive starter motor replacement is completed when a much more cost effective repair could have been done instead.

    Can not thank you enough for this video and sharing your knowledge. Not only did I save myself a lot of $$, but this was a fun project to knock out & we could have never done it without your help - and the production of this video. Thanks again - and all the best!

      Any tips on removal of the starter? I've got a Penn Yan 172 with what looks exactly like the presto lite shown in the video. Bendix is actually stuck engaged to the fly wheel. Used to 'whir' occasionally but 90% of the time would work just fine. Went to fly the other day and upon startup the starter made an odd noise, came out to check and the gear is stuck engaged to flywheel. Prop spins fine but I can't get the bendix to return to disengaged position.

    HOLY CRAP!!! this is EXACTLY what happened to me. My (soon to be former) A&P was asked to take a look at the starter it was making this whirling sound.. one or two key turns then on the 3rd the starter would engage. Mechanic said "Oh the bolts needed to be snugged up a bit... it's fine now." The following week I took the plane out with the intent to fly locally not stopping the plane and it continued to do what it had been doing... third key turn starter engages and off I go. I then asked my (soon to be former) A&P to check out the ignition to make sure I didn't need a new ignition switch and Key. He checked this out and said it was fine, He cleaned it up a bit and it was fine. Foolishly I took the plane out and it did the same thing, one, two key turns and whirling.. third key turn, started engaged. Last Saturday, I took the plan out and flew to several cities around the state, it was a BEAUTIFUL day... how could I not fly. Each city it did the same thing. Finally, I was at my last stop for the day and the starter gave out. Now I am AOG. My (former) A&P said that I had to have a new starter. Never suggested a new Bendex. I was lucky, the starter was only 560. I think I am going to keep the old starter, order a new Bendex and replace it.... keeping one on my shelf at home. I will be replacing the starter at the away station. Talk about a logistic nightmare - trying to drive 2.5 hours there, fixing the starter, then driving home, getting the Bus to the city 20 miles away, then Uber to the city where the plane is, then flying the plane to a new IA for sign off -mean while I have to remove the upper and lower cowling again.. always a treat on my M20J... but, I'll have learned a VERY valuable lesson..... and gotten a new A&P.

      I am very sorry to hear of your situation. I look after three Mooneys so I know how difficult it is to get at the starter.
      This is a very common issue with many shops just changing the starter. I hope that you will find a use for your rebuilt starter and bendix at some point.

    A couple of annuals ago I splurged on a Sky-Tec starter. The old starter really was shot. So was the ring gear, but that's another story.

    • @fastbackflying853
      @fastbackflying853  Před 4 lety

      Yes there are certainly times when it's more economical to get a new starter if there has been significant damage to it. Did you get a new ring gear install on your flywheel?

    • @marsgal42
      @marsgal42 Před 4 lety

      @@fastbackflying853 Yes, the ring gear was badly worn. Bad enough to strand me on a $100 hamburger flight (Mary's at CYYJ, a local favourite). The starter actually worked, but the ring gear was so badly worn it wouldn't engage. Shower of sparks, so no hand-propping. I improvised my way home and made some calls. :-(
      I limped home with a new ring gear a week later. A couple of week later she was in for her annual and the shop called me "nice ring gear but your starter is on its last legs and you need to think seriously about a new one..." So I did.

    what is typical lifespan for a Prestolite MZ4206? I have a 1974 Cherokee 1266 TTSN w/ this Prestolite and the Bendix is sticking for the first 3 attempts, then it kicks in. Yes mine is old, but doesn't have much time in service and the starter sounds very healthy when it does engage.

    • @fastbackflying853
      @fastbackflying853  Před 11 měsíci

      I have seen them much older than yours. They are very tough and reliable thats one reason they weigh so much.
      Obviously use or more correctly abuse will shorten the life span but I would very much think yours would be worth investing in a new Bendix drive.

      log shows my bendix replaced in '87 (@857hrs.) and only has ~400 hrs. on it. Gear teeth look great as does flywheel teeth. Gonna try to clean it up and reinstall. Does the drive roll pin have to be replaced? assume yes, so where/how do you find one? @@fastbackflying853

      You would use a Silicon based lubricant on the starter Bendix. This is supposed to be completed ever 50hrs. Depending on the condition it may require removal for cleaning and a replacement of the entire bendix.
