Chess is broken down by memorization and pattern recognition. Magnus can remember a game he saw someone else playing 13 years ago, while Fabi knows theory from positions 40+ moves into the game. The challenge in chess is that you can only move one piece at a time taking turns, so your moves from 10 moves ago affect how you and your opponent can move. A good chess player knows opening positions to provide a good offense/defense, avoid opening traps, and recognize checkmate patterns. A grand master knows how to induce bad positions for the opposing side and to lock pieces from far earlier minor opening moves.

Magnus, Fabiano and Levon Aronian tied earning 15 points each for the 2018 Grand Chess Tour. Magnus had not played any of the other events--so, as he said, he didn't need to win because he had no chance of going to London. Aronian got the 2nd of 4 seats for London (with 34 points). WIth his win Fabi tied Wesley So (with 26 points) for the 4th seat--and went to London after beating So in a tie break match.

So did Fabi make it to London?
He did--he tied in this event earning 15 points which was enough to tie Wesley So for the 4th and final London seat. Fabi beat So in a tie breaker match. Magnus, who also won this event, did not go to London because he had not played any of the other qualifying events so he wasn't going to London regardless of how he did in the event.
