No it wasn’t. The movie was bland. They did the Hulk arc again. Tony was just a plain dick. Ultron was a bad villain. Thor was useless and somehow lost on one on one battles against Ultron whereas Cap and Tony did it a lot better. Black Widow and Hulk was one of the weirdest ships. Hulkbuster vs Hulk was an unnecessary fight and for some dumb reason Hulkbuster won when Hulks unlimited anger should have kicked in.
@@dragonman9879 I agree with Troy, watching it well after it's initial release, it for sure has a lot less world and character building than the first, like honestly infinity war hardly requires age of ultrons inclusion, but on it's own Age of Ultron is pretty entertaining in it's own right.
@@dragonman9879 Endgame is coming back around to AoU in a big way. I do agree it could have been structured better, but it's no horrible.
I never thought about it until now but this is probably why I burst into tears and soon as Falcon disappeared in infinity war despite his character having said nothing in the scene.
Cap had lost his old best friend and his new best friend in a matter of seconds
@@shahwarbasith2295 It's not as much of what he did, but what he represents, especially for Cap. From his first scene in Winter Soldier we notice his bond with Steve. He's Steve's friend in the modern world, who always stood at Steve's side, especially in the second and third Captain America films. We know that Steve can count on him, which wasn't the case with Bucky, because of the brain washing. When Steve loses both in the end, it makes it more tragic
@@shahwarbasith2295 How can it be hard to find notable things Falcon has done? For one he was one of the very few Cap could count on when his entire new life was shown to be compromised by Hydra in The Winter Soldier. That continues as Falcon stands on his side in Civil War, even when it means becoming a criminal. Still after that he's kept on being at Cap's side, doing covert missions between CW and IW.
It couldn't really be more obvious that Falcon is a huge part of Cap's new life, only rivaled by Black Widow.
Yes, Winter Soldier is the film that made Captain America my favorite Avenger, and that was something I never expected. Up until that point they were all pretty much on the same level.

I assume you never read any of his comics? I certainly didn't see anything revolutionary about what Captain America's second movie did with the character. He was an idealistic badass supersoldier in the comics for many decades at that point.

The had me with The First Avenger already. I straight up HATED Captain America up to this point. But then it was so refreshing to see a hero who is just, well, good. And they did a great job divorcing the character from the propaganda tool.
swanpride To be fair, he hasn’t really been a propaganda tool since the 60’s. And at his inception he was punching Hitler at a time when many in the US not only wanted to stay out of the war, but quite a few actually supported the Nazis openly.
I agree that it was First Avenger that brought me on board with the film version of the character though, it was a perfect exploration of why he’s such a great character.
Who needs My Little Pony to teach about the "magic of friendship" when you have Winter Soldier.

I absolutely love Peter’s introduction in Civil War. It was such a perfect set-up for his character and while I’ve always been a Spider-Man fan, that scene and Homecoming turned him into my favorite Avenger. I cant fucking wait for Far From Home.
Yeah it was okay, but Homecoming was pretty bad, the character and actor does not resemble Peter or Spiderman at all and that is a real shame because they could at least try.
Spider-Man would not have entered that fight just because someone asked him to. Spider-Man is not someone's hired gun. In the Civil War comic, he was given a room for thought before he joined Tony's side, and it was primarily because of his difficult juxtaposition at the time and the Registration Act would have affected him personally. Not to mention, he quit Stark's side after things got out of control. His introduction in the movie made him seem inept. Like, "Yeah, Mr. Stark, I'll totally go with you on that German trip and will fight people I don't know personally for you."
@@antona.1327 No, it made him look like a kid. Which he is. Jumping into things without thinking the whole situation through is LITERALLY a long-established central character trait of Spider-Man, and one that often makes as many problems for him as it solves. Jumping straight into a problem because one of the greatest heroes on Earth literally rolled up to his house and told him "we need you"? There are things that could be more Spider-Man than that. But not a lot.
@@fearingvirus4156, Spider-Man developed great rational thinking when he was still a kid. That's why he decided to hide his identity to protect the people he cares about and why he never abused his powers as Peter Parker against those that were bullying him in school. Peter Parker would not give up so easily to Stark. He'd ask more questions. He'd never just be Mr. Stark's fckboy. The first thing he'd say would be "Why should I fight your fights, Stark?" That's his attitude. Spider-Man is a selfless hero, but not an idiot.

Sorry, but I really don’t find it idiotic to get an invitation from one of the worlds greatest heroes to help with an Avengers threat, and not be an asshole about it, as you seem to want him to be. I don’t recall ever reading a Spider-Man comic where say, Captain America asks him to help on a mission and Spidey responds with “why should I flag-head?” In most of them that I remember, he LITERALLY does the same thing: jumps on board almost immediately, excited to work with a world famous hero.

You're the only guy I know who didn't love Winter Soldier because of Winter Soldier.
I've always disliked the constant critique that Marvel movies follow the same formula. They simply don't. I really like how you phrased it as a set of values, which is not much more positive and accurate, especially when you look at behind-the-scenes stuff and interviews with the cast and crew.
The Once and Future Nerd I would say that they use same structure for their movies, but obviously structure without story is nothing, and story is where Marvel excel at. There's surprisingly so much going on with these characters that it's just amazing. For example, every single time I rewatch Civil War, I find something that I didn't notice before, and that sometimes changes a lot of my initial interpretation of a movie. When I first watched Civil War, it seemed like normal superhero movie and the ending was the only moment where movie gets unique. But now I can see that movie isn't normal superhero stuff, it's the flaws of characters, especially flaws of Cap that drives the movie and leads to that beautifully tragic climax. That movie is fantastic character piece that solely focuses on emotions and psychology of the characters and by the end showcases that these superpowered heroes are just human. I'm just oversimplifying here, and it's just one movie and there's so much more to talk about in it, and so many more movies have these great subtle story beats that make Marvel so great.

They simply do and those who say and think they dont is just becaue they have been paying zero attention to the mcu movies. The only time the formula changes is in the Avengers movie, otherwise we get always the same movie with a different flavour.

My personal favorite mcu movie is Thor: Ragnarok. Aside from the jokes (whick I do think were overused), I like that it perfectly sets up Thor's character for Infinity War.
In Ragnarok, we see Thor lose his loved ones. We, and also Thor, don't get to feel much about it because of how fast things are going on. After losing his father, Thor is immediately sent to a world he is not familiar with. Unlike Earth, he doesn't get treated well in Sakaar because he has no friends, and no one sees him as a God. Then, after losing his planet, he doesn't get to mourn as he is already given the pressure of leading Asgard.
It is in Infinity War that we, along Thor, realize how much he has really lost. He says this when talking to Rocket, "What more could I lose?." Despite that, Thor is still optimistic, hiding his pain with humor (just like in Ragnarok). He creates a facade around him so that no one will see his weakness. This is an important part in Thor's arc. It shows us how mature he has become since his first solo film.

Great video! I agree with everything you say. I would argue that Civil War takes this characterisation of Captain America even further and does even more amazing things with it, by juxtaposing it to the overarching characterisation of Tony (Over the course of these films Tony learns that he can't trust himself, whereas Steve learns the ONLY one he can trust is himself).
It's a beautiful showcase of Sam's undying loyalty to Steve, Steve's undying loyalty to Bucky, and Tony's resentment of the fact that Steve doesn't show the same loyalty to him. And I use their first names here instead of their superhero names, because I think that is what is key to the success of this film. They are presented as people, before superheroes.

Winter soldier is probably my favorite MCU film.
In my country (Denmark) I generally find that the overblown patriotism of americans, is something we laugh a whole lot at. This mindset really made me despise Captain america growing up (Also Superman for many of the same reasons) - not only that, but I consider CA: The first avenger to be the very worst MCU movie by quite a margin, even to this day. The crazy thing is that despite everything in the world pointing towards me hating Winter soldier, I absolutely loved it. It is such a well made action/thriller and the characterization, as you point out very well, is not only great, but it's fast and effective, making me go from - Not caring about cap at all - going into the movie, to rooting for him 15 minutes in.
What the Russo brothers did with Winter soldier is really amazing and I'm glad they're the ones directing Infinity war.

Martin Olsen I'm from England and didn't think highly of cap in his first movie and Avengers Assemble, but after watching cap jump out the quin jet without a parachute I was like yep, he's a bad ass now
Agreed, that was pretty damn awesome.
I also think they did an amazing job communicating his powers visually. In First Avenger, Cap jumps around like he's on the moon and it looks incredibly stupid. In Winter soldier, his powers feel very grounded, which helps humanize him and create tension in fight scenes.
Films&Stuffs comparison to the Bourne films, is something I never considered, but it's very obvious when you think about it. The Bourne films make Jason look amazing, but far from invincible - Winter soldier does the same thing.
Another big characterisation moment I feel most people might miss is in Sam Wilson's house, when he brings his file out to Steve and Natasha. Widow focuses on the mission (Is this Bakhmala? The Khalid Khandil mission, that was you?), while Steve focuses instead on the other guy in the picture (Is this Riley?) whom Sam mentioned in passing in the earlier scene in the VA.

In movies right now though? Sure.
I actually was one of those people who hadn't seen The First Avenger before seeing Winter Soldier. I avoided it seemingly because 14 or 15 year old me thought it looked boring. Winter Soldier and Avengers both taught me very well who Cap is, but I hate that I missed out on the feeling of the Bucky twist because I didn't know who the hell Bucky was or why he was so important. I'll never get to experience that moment the way it was supposed to be experienced.
Yeah being in the zieghast at the moment was incredible. The way Agents of Shield was affected by Winter Soldier was no doubt amazing. That movie turned a run of the mill tv show, in to the behemoth it became.
I envy the few people who experienced the twist. However, a cross-movie twist was quite the risk anyways. Majority of casual movie goers probably had not seen First Avenger or had forgotten who Bucky was, and hardcore fans knew about the twist from the comics already.

You just put into words how much I love the opening of TWS. It's all about friendship and how these super characters get their motivation not from their victories like run-of-the-mill heroes do, but from their friends and a shared interest in protecting the world. That's what held them altogether after shield fell. And coincidentally today I was talking about endgame with some of my college friends and all they could talk about was the power loopholes and theories that Natasha's weak and even Clint could kill her but I rebutted that by saying 'They're friends, it doesn't matter that one of them's more powerful than the other, cuz they're stronger together. I am so invested in the characters and I hope endgame delivers!

When you go and compare box office gross between movies to say Iron man has become popular you completely forget how many bought the movie, rent it or streamed it on netflix and such. Iron didn't bring masses to the theater because nobody knew how massive this would become. But once the movie came out and news that it was the beginning of a whole new universe a lot of them watched the film at home.
Iron Man was the first Marvel studios film as well. (incredible hulk was universal). 500 mil is really quite good considering when it came out and it was the first movie they made

I didn't think that I could like it anymore until this video.
I juste realised now how important Falcon was in the Winter Soldier. He is the embodiment of hope for Cap. The only person who share his values. It justifies perfectly that he passes the mantle to him afterwards

Your analysis represents everything I love about CA: Winter Soldier in more articulation than I could ever procure. I am so glad that you brought up the best of the small or quiet moments of non-combat interaction and establishing shots, because the film does such a good job of framing time for them (Cap and Sam, Cap and Natasha, Cap and Peggy), and that's why - even though I love Infinity War - CA: Winter Soldier (and CACW) have a more durable, long lasting impact on me. What a great commentary! PS: I think it would be interesting and memorable if they put a something like the Washington DC establishing shot but post-snap, in A4 to get the throwback and contrast.
I was a huge fan if IronMan before the first movie. It makes me so happy that Tony getting more attention. Also so many other heroes that hadn't gotten as much attention as before.

I believe that Winter Solider is one of the best action movies to come out in the past few years. It reminds me of Tom Clancy movies from the 90s starring Harrison Ford involving some levity, relationship challenges, and great action set pieces.

That last line of the video is so true. They made you care about the characters. Some people have even grown up with Stark, Cap and Thor. So the end of Infinity War was, as you so perfectly stated, a gut punch.

One of my favourite scenes is one people seem to overlook from the original iron man.
When Stark is sitting on the couch watching TV and tinkering with his Ironman arm.
He see’s the news about Yinsen’s town being taken over by the terrorists
It leads into the very first time stark actually goes out of his way to protect others. It’s the true turning point of him going from I want to stop ‘helping’ people from being hurt “stopping his weapons manufacturing after he see’s they end up in the wrong hands” and gets to I’m going to stop people from being hurt. Actually becoming so driven by what he saw and his connection with Yinsen to put himself in danger to save others and actually become a hero

This was surprisingly emotional.
First, I loved this video. Two (English major) nits for future reference. You're talking about morals, not morales, but you were saying the latter (accent second syllable). And "I can't OVERsell ..." instead of what you said, "UNDERsell". You're saying the idea is so important, there's no way to over-emphasize it.
There may have been a formula at one time, but various directors have had fun breaking the formula.
Coogler was smart enough to realize that audiences already were introduced to and fell in love with T'Challa during Civil War, so he was able to devote more time to the villain and a cast of amazing side characters. Not only did this shatter the traditional weak villain problem Marvel had, but it altered the story structure, helped to communicate themes, and most importantly made Wakanda feel like a real place.

My Favorite MCU Film is Winter Soldier. I always thought it was because how grounded and how relatable it is. Also on how much better representation of Captain America from the comic books they brought on to this film. I really didn't like The First Avenger because it was to watered down like the early Batman films after Michael Keaton. It was not believable that Captain America was this great fighter/soldier or a great leader. So when he took the role of Combat Leader in Avengers, it was sort of forced. After Winter Soldier you see who Cap really is in the comic books. By no means was I a fan of Captain America's comics before the MCU. However, in phase one it seemed that they were coming a bit short with their characters and their "bad asserry". This film hit the nail on the head. After watching this retrospective, man!!! I know now that the subtle ways of developing characters is really why this film stands out. Great work guys. You guys do awesome work.

In the original Avengers Comics, Cap was frozen in the Mid 40s. He was thawed in the Mid 60s. He was only a "man out of time" for 20 years. When Cap ran into the middle of Times Square, other than the bell-bottoms and afros, little would have appeared to have changed. Men still wore suits and ties.
But 70 years on ice? In the film, the first thing he sees is a stadium-sized TV screen with a Japanese logo? Mind-blowing!
And in 70 years, men's suits still haven't changed.

I remember the firs time I sat down to watch Winter Soldier, I remember thinking that the first scene was going to be the most important for me. I was very happy that, instead of opening with an action scene, we got a character scene instead.

Despite the absence of my favorite Marvel character, Loki, Cap Winter Soldier is my favorite so far.
D.C. is the Mind of America, the Ego. Kansas City is the Heart of America, the Id. (Also where all the blood flows through.) Or arguably St Lois. I'm pretty sure that Dallas is the groin, but don't quote me on that.
Your are revealing Marvels genius ...constant and consistent ..character development .. They make the audience care, make them curious, they gain audience buy-in ... This is why MCU succeeds where other franchises fail
Another great video! One thing that I think Marvel does brilliantly is having the people in the background of scenes react in character to the foreground. In Avengers it’s Tony’s eye roll at Steve saying “I got that reference “. In Infinity War Strange and Wong react appropriately when Tony says “Steve Rogers” is the person to call. In Wakanda when the alarm sounds Steve looks up for the source with confusion.
Also I agree with you on the scene. I had a similar conversation with my brother-in-law when he returned from Afghanistan. I hadn’t seen First Avenger. The opening plus Steve saying “don’t hold your breath “ to Fury told me all I needed to know.
Curious question: similar to how iron Man 3 was a follow up to Avengers, and Captain Marvel was the predecessor to Avengers: Endgame, do you think both films performed financially better because of the Avengers films before/after?
