In this instalment of the Marvel Studios Retrospective we take a look at Thor Ragnarok and how it deliberately changes its characters and style from previous entries. Here I explore how these changes not only make the Thor property fresh and exciting, but how they also uphold Marvel's most valuable philosophy.

I went into Thor Ragnarok with fairly low expectations and walked out of it just stunned by how amazing it was. There are very, very few movies I've ever seen that had me leaving the cinema with such a high. I just remember thinking back on it as we were walking downstairs from the cinema thinking: "holy shit, that was just brilliant". It really is something special, and is my favourite MCU film to date. Even subsequent viewings don't detract from the experience, the comedy style actually holds up so, so well.
Guardians, Winter Soldier, and Ragnarok are my favorite films because of how different they are from the "standard" MCU film. You have to appreciate those standard ones though, because without them the meta-commentary on the formula done in these films wouldn't be nearly as powerful.
Agreed.
Thor Ragnarok is not only the worst mcu movie and the bext example of everything disney gets wrong about Marvel, but is one of the worst movies of 2017 and one of the worst superhero movies ever made, because the script is cringe worthy.
@@CabezasDePescado wow. Okay. Not sure what to respond with. You didn't really say anything helpful to discussion.
But I'm glad you were able to express your opinion. It really seems like you needed to say those things.
Chad Wilson that was a healthy response. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and it can be immensely frustrating to strongly and personally logically dislike something so many seem to love strongly.
This just show a comment section doesn’t have to be a hate filled race to the bottom.
@@CabezasDePescado or you are too immature to understand it's achievement or importance, Infinity War relied on Thor as backbone as central hero, wouldn't have worked without Ragnarok
Bruh just realized, they hinted at Thor losing his eye with the mural at 6:29!
Aside from that, love all your vids mate, great job!
Holy crap I just realized tha... I mean of course, the foreshadowing was obvious, pshh.
Also the broken mural of the past history kind of a symbol of the change in the franchise, like burning the sacred jedi texts in the last star wars, I mean, even the whole blowing asgard thing
I've seen this movie well over 50 times now and never realised that
Wow, very good eye! (Not Thor's of course)
Nice.
Video: The internet is a lot like the planet Sakaar...
Me: Full of garbage?
well, you're not wrong.
you made me laugh, sir. here is a bag of monies for your service 💰
LoL
This movie is probably my favorite from the MCU, it resurrected a dead franchise and made it... well... a fun comic book movie, while also managing to be a bit serious. Hell I even slaved away working on a Thor costume for Halloween I loved it so much ( Still more to do on it, but it was wearable ).
Digging your channel, I was thinking of doing something along these lines for a second channel, finding your really well done / entertaining / inspiring. Keep up the great content!
Definitely. It brought everything I loved about Thor, while being serious at time never took itself too serious. I was already a fan of Thor from the first Thor. So Ragnarok instantly became my 3rd Favorite movie.
Thor Ragnarok is not only the worst mcu movie and the bext example of everything disney gets wrong about Marvel, but is one of the worst movies of 2017 and one of the worst superhero movies ever made, because the script is cringe worthy.
@@CabezasDePescado Not everyone can like everything. I love Ragnarok. As a film it's almost flawless. As something for everyone, it certainly isn't. But it's a very well made movie.
@@CabezasDePescado no
Post credits scene in an MCU video? Cheeky stuff

@@CabezasDePescado good for you
@@CabezasDePescado lol it almost have a non existent script to even criticise and that is what makes it fun.at least for me
Thor Ragnarok is my favorite MCU film, So I enjoyed this video alot :)
To sum up the video:
MCU's comedy needed Taika and Thor needed Waititi.
I'm still expecting to see Taika direct Guardians 3 with whomever is left (minus Drax.)
@@SeattleScotty Still, fuck Disney for firing him. But yeah Taiki Watiti is the second best choice, although if James Gunn directs Suicide Squad 2 the DCEU might finally have a good movie.
I'm just crazy about the way this videos flow so harmoniously. The transitions, the music and, of course, the analysis are just on point.
I have to say there were a few jarring comedy > serious moments, for example: Thor goes from joking around to serious face “heimdahl, I need you to help me see.”
Despite the dark worlds problems I felt that thors character was starting to become more realized. Just pay attention to him in it. He's not the same he doesnt celebrate with his friends after a victorious battle, he starts to show leadership skills when he comes up with a plan to escort loki out of asgard. Despite the shitty villain there are some cool visuals too you see an asgardian gods funeral and an asgarian prison riot.. pretty badass stuff
I love that they used Magic Sword - In The Face of Evil in the trailer.
Goddamn the Hotline Miami games had some good music.
One thing I never see mentioned is that the relentless comedy of the movie amplifies the straight scenes. I felt like the scenes with Odin's death and his conversation with Thor during the Hela fight came off as much more powerful than they would have in a more serious movie. It was a great contrast.
Great video mate.
Ragnarok is Top 5 Marvel easily. It's so so underappreciated by people that just write it off as 'dumb kids comedy'. Those people don't know how to have fun or accept change imo. I'd love a Ragnarok 2 (providing Thor doesn't die in Endgame).
Ragnarok is more brilliant than it lets on to be, which is the genius of the film.
Generic mcu haters and jealous dc fanboys like to use "it's too jokey" as a generic excuse to hate mcu movies or claim "dc is better because it's smarter and darker", when in actuality Ragnarok is smarter and honest than something like bvs that tried too hard to have "symbolism" and shoved it down your throat despite those "symbolisms" having no substance.
A light hearted movie can also have a smart message subtly placed behind the humor, and a edgelord movie trying to be dark can be dumber than a lighthearted one.
@@elin111 not a mcu hater. But unnecessary jokes ruined badass moments and emotional moments. The Thor v hulk fight felt too short imo.
Can’t be a ragnarok 2. Ragnarok can only happen once cause its the end of there world lol
@@Ravensnation94 Well yeh I know that. I just want another Thor in the same tone as ragnarok
This was awesome, dude. Great job.
Personally, I can see the characterisation and development within the comedy but I feel the fact that it is treated so jokingly detracts from the emotional depth that could be explored.
You're right. There is a clear arc that each of the side characters go on (Thor's is a little confused in that it's trying to follow the same formula of Iron Man and Captain America in terms of learning to be what you are without certain powers but that doesn't really fit with Thor's development thus far; it feels like it's just doing it because that's the thing to do by this point, I guess. And Loki's constantly going back and forth so that's a bit redundant) but the tone is so light that it feels weightless, plus the arcs themselves are limited (and where's Sif during this time? Why not build upon the characters we know rather than introduce a new person who serves the same role as 'the badass female one' because let's be honest, they're there for that same superficial purpose).
I feel like I've gone off track.
I was actually surprised by how much I enjoyed 'Thor: The Dark World' as I expected a mediocre to poor, half-arsed film but came out, having watched and felt a lot of character depth and development. You're right in that there are less characters developed and the one flaw I have with the film is the bland villain. But I would much rather less characters be developed but that development be believable and treated with the due emotional depth and impact. And I would rather a two-dimensional villain if I can still believe in them as a character and threat, and their motivation is appropriately serviceable for the story.
By the former, I mean that I felt a lot more for Thor when his mum was killed in events that were relevant to the story and in a heartfelt scene that impacted his character than the dad dying "just because", and that provoking a vaguely appropriate arc for Thor to go down and more superficial emotion (going through the motions) with Loki.
By the latter, I mean that an uncaring, alien, humanoid supervillain wanting to take over the world is at this point outdated. Science fiction and superhero films have generally reached a point where they need to show more depth in their villain or that character be boring. However, for what it was, I thought Malekith and the Dark Elves were relatively well done as a significantly sinister threat. It's simple, yes but unlike someone like Ronan from 'Guardians of the Galaxy' for example or actually the alien army from 'The Avengers', they had an imposing presence, they showed themselves to be of significant threat (personally and emotionally in killing Thor's mother), and they had a believable character (we are told about Ronan's backstory but I never find him to be a credible character in the story and he's a laughable villain, partly because he is literally laughed at in the story. And the Chitauri just appear so that the characters can fight something. I don't know who they are or why I should care about them). In Hela's case, the filmmakers attempt to give her more depth so on paper, she is a more interesting character than Malekith. However, similar to Ronan I suppose, despite being told why I should care (the interesting backstory with loads of character potential), I never really feel like that is explored nor do I get a real sense of her relationship with Thor and Loki. A sibling that took a dark path because of horrible circumstances that if the protagonist knows, should have a huge impact on his perception of the world - It's a wonderful concept and in a film that took itself even slightly seriously, I'm sure I would agree with all of your points but unfortunately, there are some Marvel films where all of the conceptually interesting ideas are rather superficially slapped onto a film and I consider 'Thor: Ragnarok' to be one of those films.
It also doesn't help that similar to 'Iron Man 3', the whole film is essentially made redundant by what comes after it; "Asgard is not a place, it's a people"... And the people are now dead too. Learn to fight without a weapon... Never mind, your journey through the following film will consist of searching for and creating a weapon because you need it; Lose an eye as a consequence of battle... Nope, here's another.
THANK YOU for pointing this out!! Everyone just praised it as a "comedy" but it wasn't JUST funny, it was so story driven, emotional, and brought us some of the coolest, most comic book feeling scenes in any Thor movie!!
I just noticed, at 3:45 is that a reference to old Thor comics where he tapped his cane to transform?
yes it is
Yep
whitegemgames yes sir
Indeed
@surfitlive Chris Hemsworth? Carrying around a cane? Umbrella is definitely less conspicuous.
Awesome video. And I lost it at the very end. I knew both of those scenes were shot similarly, but seeing them next to each other is something else lol.
I'm always amazed by the quality of your videos. Really great job, keep up the the awsome work!
Great video. Reminds me why I love the MCU so much!
Unlike most comments, i loved the movie!
I love the movie too but I will still admit a lot of the choices they make in it really do a disservice to the Thor characters and the world. The director didn't even watch the previous instalments before making this, and you can feel his disdain for them in the film with the way it casually and at times humorously disposes of the left over elements from the previous installments. I can't support that, no matter how fun the movie is. Directors coming in and upending franchises like this is isn't something we need more of.
No matter how bad the movies are that came before, you should try to actually fix them, not toss them all out on a whim.
That's good for you man I didn't really love it but still respect your opinion.
@@FullForce098 The only thing that I didn't like was how they killed The Warriors Three without having Thor acknowledge it, he shouldn've had to fight Zombie versions of them at least. Upending the past worked in this and not in The Last Jedi because this was getting rid of the past to make something better, whereas the last Jedi did the opposite.
it's dangerous for my sleep schedule to watch any of you vids after 8pm because of the inevitable binging of your content that it inspires
wow this video was extremely satisfying to watch!! the editing was on point, specially musicwise, i just loved it
This movie is absolute masterpiece. Love and thunder was hard to live up to the legend ragnarok was.
some people thought this movie was trash
But not us

Gosh I love this video this is why Thor Ragnarok was amazing!!!
Such a great synopsis of one of my favorite Marvel films. I really appreciate your storytelling and editing. Please make more 😊
Ragnarok = The Winter Soldier + Guardians

Awesome video man ! Absolutely love the edit
I love this series so much, please keep the videos coming 👍🏻👍🏻
Loving all these video.
You should do a video essay on daredevil. It's, in my opinion, the best superhero tv show ever and has amazing dialogue and characters.
You have some great essays mate I truly enjoy your work
Something on Shyamalan's Eastrail 177 trilogy would be awesome from this channel.
Great video! Love your new series.
Behold! The power! Of change!
More Ragnarok pls! And the end credit 😂 Awesome!
Led Zeppelin in the start 🤘🏼
My favorite MCU film. For me it feels like what a He Man movie can be, with the mix of weird technology and fantasy aesthetic.
Loved the video just subscribed
That video essay is great. It changed my mind about the movie.
Retrospective to this Retrospective…Ragnarok was a refreshing change due mostly to Taika’s direction…but then Taika “Waititi’ed” himself with Love & Thunder, which was a frame by frame dumpster fire 🔥
That last bit holy shit, well done.
I appreciate how the publicitary space is matched with scenes in the movie
Long time no see man
Oh yeah, I’ve been waiting for an upload 🌩
This is a damn good video! I'm subscribing!
Ragnarok is best Thor movie by far. It had awesome action in it, and it was like a big, fun adventure you go on with the characters. Not to mention Immigrant Song sets it off amazingly
Captain America winter soldier and Thor ragnarok is prob my fav Marvel movies
My top 5. It goes
1.Winter Soldier
2.Iron Man 3
3.Infinity war
4.Ragnorok
5.Homecoming.
Markus Lokander same here 🙋♂️
@@bounty8438 That's about right for me, maybe not in the same order though.
Exactly the opposite for me lol
Amazing video
wonderful video. subscribed
I love these videos
Dude you are so underrated
And then everyone on the ship immediately dies and it was all for nothing. Until some loophole allows everyone to come back not just who was killed by the infinity stones but by thanos in general (gotta revive gamora,) but only those in like the last few days/months because we can’t have all the past planets all come back and overpopulate again, then everything is happily ever after, lol
Good essay, missed ya
Ragnarok was a great movie, but I believe that the Shakespearean style of the first Thor fits his character better. But great video nonetheless! :)
I get what you mean. Thor in the comics is not to be taken as a joke, he is a God, and a destructive force maintains his Godhood in the way he Carrie's himself. With that being said, I really did love Ragnarok, it was a nice change, and super fun, plus funny. And it still managed to make him look like a complete badass, while making him even stronger than previous movies. The movie gets a thumbs up from me
When I was watching this movie, I took note of 3 things:
1: the music is amazing. Especially on sakkar the music sounds like a video game. I especially liked the score during the Doctor Strange cameo.
2: the cinematography was especially brilliant in this one. There were a lot of symmetrical shots and brilliant foreshadowing in the cinematography.
3: the cgi was both really good and really bad. The fire cg was not believable at all, but the rest was really well done.
I've definitely watched this movie way too many times! XD As to your first point, I was so thrilled that we finally had some obvious musical continuity between films. I feel that this is an area where the MCU has been sufficiently lacking. Having Dr. Strange's theme come in during his scene was brilliant. Also, the scene (shown at the end of this video) in Ragnarok where it mocks the previous movie is so meta. Not only does it have musical continuity by referencing the score from Thor the Dark World, but it also takes the Non-Diagetic music (music that exists outside of the story's world) and inserts it into the film as Diagetic music (existing in the story; characters interact with the music and can hear it). It's so brilliant and gives Loki an almost Deadpool-esque quality of humor by breaking the fourth wall!
When i originally saw Thor: Ragnarok i thought it was overrated. But this video completely changed my mind.
2:55 Zachary Levi reincarnated from Fandral to Shazam real quick.
Brilliant video. Came in expecting similar stuff to the other 300 Ragnarok videos I've seen, and was very pleasantly surprised.
Ragnarok is the best film in the MCU by a clear mile (not to put down other MCU films, especially Infinity War, Iron Man, and Winter Soldier).
I like your kirby-style transitions.
Nice video, Ragnarok rocks
So many hilarious scenes and yet, there's still a feeling of palpable stakes, even if it comes down to "Big Bad, World Destruction". My favorite Marvel movie to date.
I would agree this was a fantastic revamp of Thor which was really marked when they put out what Thor was doing during civil war...
Every story line is great in this
The only thing I don't like much about videos like these is they kinda imply that Ragnarok was the only good Thor movie, but I also really love Thor 1. I think it was really beautiful and did the really tough job of establishing this world of rainbow space vikings for the first time.
Love & Thunder Breakdown When🤔
To me the thibg that holds Ragnorok back from being the super smart movie and one of the best is something that made it so great. The comedy.
I think this revision of Thor's character and world came too late, though, because they simply ignored all the characters that survived Ragnarok at the beginning of Avengers Infinity War. Usually a disadvantage in general when you're making stuff as part of a shared universe, but this was particularly affected because it came in the final two years of the entire MCU. But, apart from a few unnecessary comedy scenes (like Thor getting hit by the ball bouncing off the window or him overdoing the "sun's getting low" dialogue, thereby reducing its emotional impact that we developed in Age of Ultron), this movie certainly is a great example of how to change around stuff so drastically in a positive manner. Having him fight the Hulk and then having Loki, Hulk, and Thor in the final fight were worth the price of admission alone.
PS: I'm generally not a fan of the excessive comedy they try to do in Marvel movies, so I'm biased here and those unnecessary comedy scenes I mention might have been great for some.
You are correct that it had too many jokes. And I love the jokes and Comedys in the MCU. Here it effected the emotional impact way too much
Thanos only kills half of populations, and we only saw the aftermath of the fight on the Asgardian ship. I think it's plausible that he could have let half of the Asgardians (and Korg, Meek, and Valkyrie) escape.
The revision of Thor's changed behaviour is not too late.... First we have the Loki Trilogy (Thor 1, Avengers 1, Thor 2), now we have the Thor Trilogy (Thor 3, Avengers 3, Avengers 4). Sorry Avengers 2.
I love this movie! It’s my favorite of 2017!
The movie worked because there is a simple truth; there are many things which we cannot avoid yet we must accept. Death is one of them, even for Asgardians. Thus we see Thor grow from a brash young man (first Thor film) to a mature adult suitable to take Odin's place
My favorite MCU film along with Winter Soldier and & the GOG films
7:33 still one of my best scones in the MCU.
"You cannot change something for the sake of changing it." I wish Lucasfilm heeded that advice.
@WeedRichards That's because they wanted something new and good, not just something new.
Superb video! Great insights and very nice presentation. Do you think that Thor is the character that Thor is the Avenger whose arc has changed the most?
smoothest promotion of 2019
Led Zeppelin scene instantly transformed my Least favorite (Thor) into one of my favorite avengers. The Stormbreaker Wakanda scene elevated him to my favorite Avenger!
"As the title suggest, the narrative is centered around Ragnarok."
No, it's centered around Planet Hulk; it just _happens_ to have Ragnarok in it.
It's clearly more one than it is the other.
When is the follow up video on Battle of five armies coming...?
*Embrace the Power of Change*
Thor Ragnarok is just a badass movie.
5:51 never noticed hulk's reaction
"Every character gets their moment." It's a Deus ex Machina Medley. Just have to point that out, and "Asgard, your Savior is Here!' is probably the most literal, and dramatic Deus Ex Machina, ever. A god, descending from the heavens, through parting clouds, in a space-ship. (Nobody upstages Loki) Even Surtur is a Deus Ex Machina. Hell, Korg gets one.
3:41 I absolutely HATE this tactic! Captain America does the same move in Age of Ultron. It makes no sense! "Oh, no. He's spinning. Better step a foot to my left."
*See's scene where Thor and Loki go from human outfits to their usual gear*
*rewinds a few times before continuing*
Thor Ragnarok has one of the best soundtracks of any mcu movie.
I did enjoy Thor Ragnorak but I have to admit that, having read Thor since the 1960's, I do feel a little disappointed that the "Realm Eternal" only lasted 3 movies. They don't make "Realm Eternals" like they used to.
What's the name of the synthwave song you used?
Ragnarok was the first good Thor movie!
Was this whole video made just for the Segway into the sponsorship? well it was a good video anyways haha
Theres supposed to be a Thor 4, and supposedly Taika comes back, which I hope so. He saved the Thor movies
I just came here to say-MAGIC SWORD!!!!!!!!!!
The additional symbolism behind Thor's missing eye in conjunction with it being a reference to Norse mythology makes me sad that they threw it out for that glass eye joke with Rocket.
Heh heh, “same EYEconic wound”😂
07:38 why be a king when you can be a god
ragnarok was awesome, they took the most boring marvel character and made him fun and engaging, everything that didnt work in the first two thor movies were flipped 360 degrees and given an overhaul, this is where thor thrives in strange worlds meeting stranger beings,he's an explorer of cosmic marvel along with the guardians,
ragnarok is a subtle tragedy with the loss of Odin, asgard, the warriors three but the tragic and comedic scenes co-exist instead of overlapping each other
and its not just thor's show, you got a strong supporting cast in the hulk,a good cameo in dr strange, loki gets to have his fun as the god of mischief and valkyrie has her moments
here's hoping for more laughs, adventure, synthwave and waititi magic in thor 4
While I didn't really love Thor: Ragnarok I still loved the video, Thor became interesting in my opinion in Infinty War not Ragnarok in Infinty War he was a badass who took the conflict seriously but had the charm of the Ragnarok version without being a total gooofball.
Character is the biggest strenght of the mcu, and the thing every other attempt at a cinematic universe failed to realize. They all focused on the crossover sequel baits instead of the characters.
