      Speaking of teaming up against a common enemy, this current phenomenon of the 'Ragnarok shitting on Dark World era' kind of mirrors the current war by Cinema Wins, et al on the Cinema Sins era. This is all the fault of the precedent eras for not evolving or being versatile enough to remain relevant or fit for overall purpose.

    What impressed me most about Thor: Ragnarok was the statement it made about the past and institutions built upon it. Hela exposed the Asgardian utopia as being built upon a legacy of bloody conquest and then whitewashed over. Upon this realization, the film then made a daring statement: perhaps it is best to tear down those institutions, and perhaps what makes a nation great is not how much it has conquered, but the lives of the people that live within that nation. I never expected that kind of message in such a fun and colorful movie.

Now I just hold out hope for some of the others from the original group get those same chances... black widow, Hawkeye, and hulk, I love them all already, but they really deserve to get a taste of the "let's add a few more notes to the one you're already playing" treatment.

    Because water was relatively scarce, when bathing only one tub would have been used to clean the whole family. It was customary for the father to bathe first, followed by the mother, then each child in order of oldest to youngest.
    When it came time to throw out the bathwater, the baby would have been the last to use it, ergo...

      From my understanding, the purest of the pure, in other words the youngest to the oldest went first because the youngest child's body dirt would be less than the oldest, especially if they are babies. The water would also be too cold by the time you put the youngest in the tub. Not good for a child.

    I think what gets me about Loki, is that in the previous movies, you can kinda pick out that he takes it for granted that Thor will forgive him. Not because he necessarily wants to be forgiven, but because in his mind, Thor is "the dumb sentimental one" and as long as Thor thinks he can turn around and come home, Loki can go "fuck that, I don't want to". You can kinda see some threads of it in Thor 2 when he seems to miss out on Thor having faith in him, but then he betrays and tricks Thor anyway and Thor is given a 'oh now that he's dead, maybe he could have been better" viewpoint. This movie solidifies for Thor that Loki cannot come back. Loki tricked him, with no hint of remorse. He mourned for his brother. That's a deep betrayal. And so any hint of expectation and trust is gone. And Thor isn't even mad. He just accepts that Loki will always hurt him. And sometimes, that can be enough to turn a guy around.
    Because despite everything, Loki grew up thinking Thor was his big brother. He's jealous, a bit petty, but he does love his brother. And to finally lose that faith, that trust, it opens one's eyes. Thor was no longer "the dumb sentimental one". Instead, he was the sentimental one, because he missed it. And it makes me eager to see Infinity War, to see if Loki will stick to this or go back to his old ways.

    • @celinak5062
      @celinak5062 Před 6 lety +11

      botOxymoron or maybe loki is glad that the fantasy version of a little brother that Thor clinged to is gone and there isn't the expectation that truth, honour and justice works for everyone. You can lose a battle and win a war, you can tell white lies and diplomacy is pragmatic, and justice is a facade in a kingdom where no one agreed to the law of their colonialised king.

    • @botOxymoron
      @botOxymoron Před 6 lety +8

      That's a good point too! Thor had the chance to really prove himself in this movie, and maybe Loki finally saw him as a leader to stand behind. Part of Loki's motivation in Thor 1 after all, was thinking Thor would be a terrible king. And considering his previous behavior and comparing it to how Odin apparently used to run his kingdom... Thor has the chance to be much wiser than his father.

    • @celinak5062
      @celinak5062 Před 6 lety +5

      botOxymoron
      Yeah, now Thor finally has the potential to be a wiser king than Odin and Loki ever were.
      Loki probably wanted a challenge too and now thor finally learns, so now thor stopped falling for his old tricks and if loki's plans are overcomplicated(which is usually why they fail) thor would critique it, instead of dismiss it and he was willing to use some of loki's tactics in thor 2. I totally agree that loki always expected to be forgiven by thor and that he expected odin to ignore him and his mother to stand by him and be accepting, but never stand up for him.
      I actually did wonder if loki was up to his old tricks in the ending of thor 3 and he can make his clones "hard light" now, but that's just going to be another head-canon

      Jack Kirby would've hated every second of this movie. Kirby was doing with the comics what Snyder tried to do with superhero movies - he saw superheros as larger-than-life, epic, and full of Shakespearen pathos. When Kirby drew Ragnarok, Ragnarok it was. Big, ugly, moody, dreadful battle of all battles, with Thor battling the spawn of Loki, the Midgard Serpent, and spawns of Hel attacking the gates of Asgard, with every Aesir God fighting together.
      This movie was godawful trash.

    I'd really like to discuss how the MCU is kind of outgrowing comic books themselves. Comic books, by some necessity, can never change much. And thus there is no real character development. Peter Parker can never get over Uncle Ben's death, and therefore can never really be allowed to be more than a character balancing normal life with superheroing.
    But in Thor Ragnarok, Odin dies, Asgard is destroyed, and Loki is redeemed. It's not even the first time since SHIELD is also basically defunct. Early in the MCU people used to want to expect to see on screen what they had already read in comic books, within a reasonable degree of adaptation. But now the whole MCU is on uncharted territory where the filmmakers are more inspired by comic stories but not beholden to them, and that's just exciting.
    By the very nature of their mediums, comic books are stuck with a generally perpetually rebooted status quo, while the movies are under more pressure just by how they operate, to make characters who change and grow. Tony Stark outgrows his chest implant, Thor outgrows his hammer, Captain America outgrows his shield. Those are some powerful character growth stories and I love it.

    • @kimsim8750

      Uncle Dan so true. I teach history and literature and I hate a story with no character development. It is not a good story or worth my time if the characters don’t change. Being stuck in a perpetual loop, where they same things keep happening over and over again is just stagnation. That is why I am so sad and annoyed with he state of our nation. We should learn something about how to deal with situations by reflecting on the past (which is why knowing history is important). If we don’t, stupid human nature takes over and awful things keep happening.😡😔

    • @shinobisauren
      @shinobisauren Před 5 lety +11

      Those kinds of character arcs, deaths and game-changers are done in comics, though less often. The thing is that the timeline for comics has been sort of reset towards status quo or a new status quo to start from again a few times as well after such arcs, and you have the fact that it's a multiverse with a bunch of different iterations of the same character (MCU being an example of a different universe than 616, the 'standard' setting for Marvel). It also depends on how much other series might rest on something.
      Another element is that comic book re-characterisation and development tends to move at a slower pace; a character might grow over a few years but that's not going to be nearly as instantly felt or noticeable as it would have to be to fit into a 2 hour movie. On top of that, because comics run for decades characters also tend to move along with their times, which one could argue for as development or progress in characterisation, but I'm not sure you'd be willing to count that.
      It's also a lot harder to switch up one of the most famous Avengers completely than it is to let for example the Young Avengers or one of the X-men b-teams or other less famous teams or characters go through a serious character arc to some extent, both because flagship properties have dedicated fans that will resist change more and have more riding on them financially, as well as that such changes have to ripple through a whole bunch of other properties as well, as there are constant crossovers of concurrently running series that have to be coordinated.
      But I would like to argue against 'there's no character development in comic books'. Some of the character development has been undone again afterward, and the best examples aren't per se in the flagship properties, but it seems far too broad and sort of demeaning a statement. And this is only talking about mainstream superhero comics, apart from all the smaller series, indie comics and things like that that exist.

    • @Cbeyke
      @Cbeyke Před 5 lety +1

      I completely agree! Plus movies have more of a time crunch than comics do since the actors get older or want to move on to new projects. Unlike comic books, they have to adapt continuously just to keep pace

    With all respect for Kenneth Branagh, I couldn’t get into the first two Thor movies. I felt like I was watching fascinating characters being stuffed into King Lear or Othello or Hamlet or Coriolanus.
    Even Shakespeare’s most dramatic tragedies have a lot of humor. I didn’t see a lot of that in Thor 1 and 2.
    Branagh takes Shakespeare far more seriously than Shakespeare took himself.
    I suspect William would have loved Ragnarok.
    And Civil War - that’s a huge tragedy that, until the last 15-20 minutes, keeps providing unexpected comic relief.

    Great video as always, Mikey, but I want to make the case that Nebula's backstory is almost the same as Loki's but about 10 times more horrific. Loki's story is up there, but Thanos is a magnitude worse than Odin, and nobody was replacing his body parts when he lost to Thor in battle.

    • @nemowindsor8724
      @nemowindsor8724 Před 6 lety +24

      Nebula is a great character and there's no question she suffered more direct abuse. But I don't think we need to have a competition for abuse. I think the way Loki was mistreated was very different, more psychological. There's no love lost between Nebula and Thanos, but Loki and Odin loved each other - and still Odin brought him up to hate himself, even if unintentionally, and planned to use him as a political chit. Sometimes that happens in real life - you love each other but do terrible things regardless. Both Nebz and the Lokester are two of my fave MCU characters in any case, mostly because they've had these horrible experiences and, in a kinda true-to-life way, haven't handled them all that well.

    • @deztn_bot8915
      @deztn_bot8915 Před 5 lety +2

      The scene in Infinity War where Nebula was being held in a field that SEPARATED HER BODY still horrified me. That alone tells me that her daddy issues mostly relate to how she feels about Gamora and not that they actually love the giant purple ‘dad of the year’

    • @Arkylie
      @Arkylie Před 5 lety +2

      @@deztn_bot8915 ...now consider that immediately prior to The Avengers, Loki spent roughly a year in the place where Thanos lives, with all the likely horror that that entails. Loki's actor described this time as Loki going through "the seventh circle of Hell," and we have concrete proof that he was being influenced by the scepter (amplifying his negative emotions), good reason to suspect that his memories had been tampered with (thinks that Thor threw him into an abyss, rather than him letting go), and also good reason to suspect that a good chunk of that year could've been literal torture trying to make him more useful to Thanos (much like Nebula).
      The evidence does pile up toward Loki being a far more sympathetic villain in Avengers than you might expect, but it does go a long way to explain why his actions in that film are quite the outlier. And it makes his life imprisonment in Thor 2 so much more horrific.

  • @alexa_renae
    @alexa_renae Před 6 lety +131

    Aaaaaaaaaah the Loki section yes!
    I love the direction they took with him in Ragnarok because he finally feels like the God of Mischief and not just... Idiot Moron Shit-Weasel (thanks for that). I feel like Loki kind of suffered from Hades Syndrome for a while -- like, "we need a villain so let's take this chaotic neutral-ish character and make them Straight Up Evil just cuz. Motivation? Um... idk like world domination or something?" So it's nice to see something different happening and also I'm a sucker for "villain-turned-annoying-sidekick" story arcs.

      To be fair, that was his characterization in the comics. Tom Hiddleston gave a bit of a woobiness to the character which eventually lead to this.
      I really don't see the abuse, though. He was loved, but Odin didn't know how to deal with him. Freya did, but Loki was so hung up on pleasing Odin, that he completely ignored what he already had. Thor loved him but also took him for granted because he was always there. Which is how real siblings *are.* I see a lot of my own family in here. We all care for each other, but we're not necessarily good at showing it and sometimes we can be thoughtless. The one advantage we have is that we're a lot more open and can talk about the past and work through and understand all the crazy.

      I believe you. I've read fanfiction taking a sort of cliffnotes version of Norse mythology to paint Loki as abused and the rest of the gods as violent bullies. Not that the Norse gods aren't jerks by contemporary standards, but if these people bothered to *read* the myths with any understanding of the source culture, they'd realize Loki brought most of his suffering on himself.

    I just watched this for the first time on Wednesday. So glad to be able to begin consuming all of the commentary stuff, and thrilled to be able to start with this!

    You have another new subscriber. You're well spoken, funny, good with editing and your voice isn't annoying.
    Oh and your sound levels are great throughout the production. At no point did I want to turn you up or down. That takes more skill than people give credit for.
    Keep up the good work and keep honing your craft.

    It's very rare that i stay till the last second of a video especially on a channel I've never watched before but my love of ragnarok drew me to cinema sins' video which lead me to yours and I am looking forward to doing a deep dive into all of your videos. Sub smashed and bell rang

    Hey, I just wanted to say I just got turned on to and binged every video this channel has after watching the Cinema Wins episode and I have to say this is one of the only channels I subscribe to.
    I love your fantastic analyses and your personal thoughts. I rewatch not only the movies you review but all movies with a different mindset thanks to you. The world is better with you in it and I personally am better having watched your content. Keep up the amazing work, Mikey.

    Love how you used the Rugrats theme song, also written by Mark Mothersbaugh, in the video :)
