Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Woodburning Steam Trains

  • In August 2021, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad hosted the Victorian Iron Horse Roundup. A number of 19th-century era narrow gauge locomotives were brought in to operate specials between Antonito, CO and Chama, NM. The video showcases the two oldest locomotives together, the "Eureka" and the "Glenbrook," as they doublehead to Cumbres Pass. The two wood burners put on quite the show on the Rio Grande's Chama line with a 4% grade up to 10,015 feet in elevation.
    "Eureka," aka Eureka & Palisade 4-4-0 #4, was built by Baldwin in 1875. It operated in revenue service until 1939. It was operated by Warner Bros. for use in a number of movies. It is today privately owned by Dan Markoff, who has operated the "Eureka" since 1991. The engine has made a number of appearances in Nevada and Colorado since then. This trip marked Eureka's first major trip in years.
    "Glenbrook," aka Carson and Tahoe Lumber and Fluming Company 2-6-0 #1, was also built by Baldwin in 1875. It would operate for C&TL and Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad until 1926. It was later donated to the Nevada State Railroad Museum of Carson City, NV. The "Glenbrook" was restored by NSRM to operation in 2015, and this trip marks its first appearance outside of Nevada.

    What a perfect day to arrive in San Francisco is a 19th century iron horses from Dynamo Production. Sound of the chuffing is really well done.

    Firing anything up Cumbres Pass is a workout, but these wood burners basically vaporize everything you throw in them when they're working, non-stop adding wood they probably used most of that tender on the day.

      There's pretty much always a shower of cinders from wood burners (coal too), that's the purpose of the funky looking stacks, is there are spark arrestors inside that should keep stuff inside until they cool enough not to be red hot anymore.

    I love seeing double head steam trains. But I'm wondering one thing. Why did it take a double head to pull that train when one loco could have done it?

      Absolutely wrong. The 4% grade was too much for both of these locomotives to handle even with a train this small - keep in mind just how old and how small these engines are.
