It was wonderful to remember my first and only trip from Catania to Florence back in 1996. At that time the train looked much worse and all the cabins were full; military service was still compulsory in Italy, so young soldiers went crazy on the train.
In addition to this memory, it was a pleasure to enjoy another video of yours, especially today when Covid-19 captured us in our places of residence. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart!

No, Trenitalia doen't belive in overnight trains. They tryed to candelled all of them many times, but "unfortunatly" those trains are considered as minimum services for some parts of the country, like Siracusa, so they could not cancel those trains

    • @beppe-RmT0

That' s true.....up to 10 years ago tranitalia offered lot's of night trains. From 2011 they cut a lot of them leaving just the minimum with an higher level ,so not seat couchette and WL accomodation with 1st and 2nd class anymore, but the new refurbished basic, confort and deluxe class, but only 1 couple of train for every link....maybe the other States leaved even less night trains....

A decent trick to try and assess if you get other people in your compartment is to count things like water bottles, goodie bags, bed linnen, etc. I saw only one goody bag, so that generally means no other guests are joining.

I used the Trenitalia sleeper last week between Turin and Salerno en route to Sicily and did the ferry crossing in daylight. All fantastic, but on the return journey the sleeper coach was closed and I was given a couchette - which is 'sleeping' on a hard seat, and no sink. I've asked Trenitalia how often this happens. I'd take lots of sleepers across Europe, but not if I'm not getting what I paid for. Also I know what you mean about heat, my cabins were hot in October... Re conductors the guy on the outward trip was lovely, but the one on the return sounds like yours!

This trip could be a great experience, but it sure didn't look like that to me! The prospect of sharing a small compartment with two strangers wouldn't appeal to me - and apparently not to others, since you were able to sleep solo. The excessive heat was unnecessary - just connect the cars to electricity a couple of hours before boarding. Leaking faucets and unclean toilets suggests poor maintenance. That "breakfast" was a joke, and having a surly conductor was the icing on the cake.
I suppose the ferry arrangement is costly for them to provide, so they cut all the corners they could. I would not recommend this to anyone.

If it isn't for the department of transportation subsidizing it, there wouldn't be sleeper trains in Italy.

Oh man it seems like so many small design issues... I mean firstly it's a dark train in the blazing sun of Italy which is already a bad start, it's inefficient really.
Additionally, it always baffles me whenever anyone puts any cold-air AC at the *bottom* because we all know what kind of air rises and sinks due to density don't we? Yet this always seems to slip the minds of many a designer. This would mean to even hope for a comparable top-bunk experience, the bottom bunk would need to be fridged cold! Otherwise, this could be so good.
(Shame about the conductor ofc), but as nandervso astutely pointed out, checking to see how many Amenity kits/ water bottles is always a good way to check how many are expected. Thanks to the trip report :)

  • @ilgattooo
    @ilgattooo Před 3 lety +3

Very few people use night train in Italy because they are often more expensive than planes. Trenitalia cuts every year several night services, but some of them have to remain because the government pays (a lot) for them. So actually they don't believe in night trains. Also, some Excelsior cars were scrapped few years after their construction because they were too expensive to operate, and the remaining ones are used as couchette cars like you wrote.

This looks like fun. My daughter and I took a German sleeper car train from Munich to Amsterdam in 2016 at the end of a Go Ahead Jewels of the Alpine tour. This train was discontinued later that year as Europe now has high speed rail to get places fast. The advantage was instead of a hotel you can sleep overnight and wake up at your next destination first thing the next morning. Your hotel can hold your luggage until later when your room is ready. I have taken an AMTRAK sleeper car a couple of times but what a price difference from coach. Glad you talked to a person instead of a machine in Sicily. Seems I always have questions. If you want to see an interesting single accomodation on a train, have a look at the Australian train "the Ghan". Gold Class. The corridor run in the centre of the carriage in a zig zag configurations between the cabins. It's a bit tight at night when you step off the bed, but during the day you sit in a very confortable armchair, and no sharing. Toilet and showers are at each end of the carriage. There is also a 24hr tea/coffee/biscuit self serve. The same applies to the "Indian Pacific" train.

That is really bad about the heat, they need to sort that out as no one can sleep in that heat. And the staff being rude is typical. They would have known if anyone was joining you but can’t be bothered. Crap service like you experienced is what drives people away from sleepers. Such a shame as that room looked really good and that top bunked looked amazing with the space.

I wonder how much time was added to the trip by loading the train cars onto the ferry. Wouldnt it be better to take a bus to a ferry terminal, then back onto a train. Seems crazy.

In Spain we have all type of trains in mainland Spain, but we have 2 archipielagos: Canary Islands and Balearic Islands. In the Balearic Islands there are only commuter trains and 2 metro lines for the city of Palma de Mallorca. In the Canary Islands there isn't any train line, just buses (guaguas, as they say it). It would be great if the Spanish government constructed a connection between the Islands and mainland Spain by train on a ferry, as Italy did with Sicily.
Postdata: The Canary Islands are preparing high speed regional trains for the 2 major islands of the archipielago: Tenerife and Gran Canaria

Renfe (Spain's public and only (until the next year, when the french competence will appear with some low-cost SNCF trains) railway company) eliminated recently the "Trenhotel" services (Night train services) due to the Covid-19 crisis. I don't know what will Renfe do with the "Trenhotel"

@@TrebleLover The only "Trenhotel" services that were operating before the Covid-19 crisis were services serving Madrid with the major cities in the autonomous community of Galicia.
There were also "Trenhotel" services from Barcelona to the same destination (Major cities in Galicia) and some international services, for example, the service you said in your comment, a service connecting Paris with Madrid, or Hendaye (Spanish Border) with Lisbon, most exactly, the station of Santa Apolonia. All of them have been discontinued by "Diurno" (Daily) and High Speed trains

Your "heat theory" is correct, they didn't couple the electricity while standing in sunny Sicily.
Don't get fooled by "Deluxe" name, it's just a normal sleeping car. Italians named classes on ICN trains "Basic", "Comfort" and "Deluxe", but these are just names. The only deluxe class on ICN is the Excelsior.
T2S cars never had communal showers, and so don't their rebuilds. If you want to try a good rebuild, try the BTE Autoreisezug Hamburg - Lörrach or the winter Alpen Express from Netherlands to Austria. They have ex-ÖBB sleeping cars now running for BTE, named WLABm33, which are the T2S rebuilds too, but much better made, and in better shape than these South Italian cars.

That train is 60 y.o. before that you rest on a wood plank, and the sound of the train was super loud into the cabin. You can sleep with hot "environment", but for sure not in a loud one. The trainhead (or in italian Capotreno) well... probably was not rude, but for real he doesn't know who is going to sleep next to you. Immagine working the night and also trying to remeber all this sort of things.
