This is a good book. Does provide a step by step introduction to how to build things czcams.com/users/postUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 , also does offer some steps. Includes pictures to give you ideas for layouts and such. If you are looking for a guide, this is not exactly what you want. But if you are trying to familiarize yourself with the way that pole barn building and other out buildings, are made, then this will work just as you need it to. A few things in this book are a barn (of course), detached garage, storage building, and coops.

At 1:09 you asked why the pencils are flat. 1) They won't roll off the surface you lay them on. 2) But they can be used for fine measuring or spacing. They are 1/4" thick and 1/2" wide. 3) The lead is thick to resist breaking, and you can scrub the lead down to a sharp but wide shape for precision marking.

    • @anadubar4819
      @anadubar4819 Před rokem +3

Uhm, if you do, then you don't do it right.
A friend of mine has a construction company in Berlin, and it basically consists of 8 friends working together, building houses. They build houses all over Germany and Poland.
In addition to that: there is a difference in building a brick house versus wood.
There is a huge difference in building laws, laws in Germany being much more complicated, and they require licensed specialists for all work you do, from construction to plumbing to electricity. This prevents people from doing all kinds of different jobs, they have to specialize in one particular field, have the specific diplomas and the liability insurance that goes with it.
And then, on a side note, I dunno about this house which looks of a decent quality, but in general, the quality of houses in Germany is WAAAAAYY above that of American houses. These paperboard houses get blown away with the first hurricane, they would never pass the Bauabnahme (final approval by authorities) in Germany. When you close one window, the entire house shakes.
Whilst in Germany, it is expected that houses, once build, will be useable for the next 400 years. At least.

Same here in Australia. A whole slew of "not my job" tradies who have minimal care of the build as an entirety because theres no ownership past what their task in the process is. Everyone is fast to point fingers when something goes wrong with no one willing to step in and make repairs because that's tacitly taking the blame. Builds are never on schedule because if one trade is late or slow to complete, then it puts everything else off schedule, and the following trades have already moved on to another job.
We are in the middle of building a shed on the farm for robotic milking and involved there's the shed builder, concreter, glazier, electrician, plumber, IT tech, and installers of machinery.
Already, the shed builders have us a minimum of 2 months behind schedule because they took two weeks off without saying anything to do a 'quick job' elsewhere. The concreter, who should have had his part done 3 weeks ago is unavailable for another 4 weeks due to him not being able to wait and having work booked elsewhere and the glazier said he'd have to do his installs now or not be able to do the job so all windows and doors have been done before the floors even in... All other trades have also been shunted weeks further away from contracted dates because of what the builder did and no one is sure of trades availability now and no one is happy, least of all those of us who should have had a completed shed ready to use 2 weeks ago.

This pipe should always be placed alongside the footing and lower than the joint where the first course of block meets the footing. The pipe has to be lower than this joint in order for water to drain away from the wall. Years ago, Fine Home Building Magazine made the same error in an article about how to waterproof a basement. They issued a correction after I pointed out their error. Don’t feel bad, most builders make the same mistake.

I have met some crews work like family. Show up everyday. It all depends on contractor. Pay them good, unemployment during winter, benefits and consistent busy work. Actually a lot of contractors doing this type of build have amazing crews.
As a customer if I am building a house, and say I don't cheap out accept a good bid I will find a contractor with employees like this.
Usually what happens is homeowner will hire for least price, get cheapest contractor, who will pay lowest to employees, who will not show up.
Now if you spend decent amount of money, the contractor has money to pay decent etc.
You get what you pay. If I don't pay good for a job I will end up with subpar contractor.
You will be surprised if you found out what he pays those people to show up.
It shows up in their attitude. They are paid very well.

Overall an extremely pleasant experience watching this.

Two things I miss, building with my old crew and my youth and those joking moments around the jobsite. I’ll be 60 in 8 days and 5 years I’ll be retiring from being a Boeing Aircraft Mechanic here in Ohio. Just wanted to let you guys know, you bring back great memories of my jobsite days and my youth and all you guys craftsmanship, awesome work. I came across your videos and totally enjoy watching your work. You guys are pretty funny 😆You guys brought up why the carpenter pencils are flat, personally outside of them fitting pretty good in your ear or nailbag chisel slots, I think they are best for doing those 1/4 scribes . All in all a great video and I see no short cuts in materials and construction practices. Great job done by all.

Truth. I watched your vid while cleaning up the “play” room of my 3 grandsons. I flew to another state to help our daughter out while she is sick. And your words rang in my heart. Once a momma all ways a momma. Why? Because we do it out of love for our family! They mean more to us than life itself. My sweet husband is away from me for 3.5 wks and I miss him everyday, but he knows my heart was here with our daughter! So while I am here, I clean, do laundry, help with homework each night and make beds. I love serving our children. Oh yeah, our oldest daughters family is taking granddaughter #3 to Paris for her graduation present, so in 2 wks after I get back home, I leave again for a wk of watching their 3 dogs! ITS WHAT WE DO!

Came across this video today and was drawn in as well as the many other viewers. I throughly enjoyed the entire 2 1/2 hours watching every step of the way...very cool to watch the process...I am curious just how long that job was though...thank you SO much for all the work you all did on shooting the build. REALLY REALLY enjoyed it....When I was 14 yrs old my Dad built a four bdr. 2 bath, 2 story addition to our existing tiny house which was basically a weekend cabin. My brother and I were his only crew. From foundation to shingles and ALL the interior as well as plumbing and electrical, paneling, paint and wallpaper...It was an amazing experience I will never forget and I miss that environment SO much... I have not been able to enjoy that kind of work much in my adult life and that stinks...I am now 62 and believing God for my chance to at least oversee some projects in the near future as we build a safe place for those who need it...blessings to you guys!

I'm SURE you guys must know this but as a carpenter/cabinet guy I was a little worried when you guys were drilling holes in the cabinet doors for the doorhandles. Hold a piece of (leftover) wood on the inside of the door where you're drilling the hole to fix the handle on. It will decrees any sort of splintering/pieces breaking off where you're drilling by like 90%.

This is an amazing video! I can’t believe I sat and watched the whole thing, but this was so well done, so well edited, it had me locked in the whole time.
I’ll say this, if I ever build another home, I WANT your company doing it. I’ve never seen one crew do everything!! From digging dirt, foundation, concrete pouring, block, rebar, framing, roofing, decking, siding, drywall, primer, painting, fireplace, tile, flooring, cabinets…. and I’m missing tons more, every member of your crew did it. This HAS to make the whole house just that much better. Here, it’s a separate company with different crew at each step of the way. Having your crew doing it all means you’re taking ownership all the way through. Seeing everyone involved in staining the doors and baseboards was next level amazing as well. Seriously, whoever the homeowner is here…. you are SO fortunate to have had this company and crew. I’ve had homes built and others renovated that don’t come anywhere close to this quality, this level of care! Whatever you paid them…. it wasn’t enough! 😂 I’m in Canada, but hell I’d move to the Smokey mountains just to be able to hire you guys to build me a home.
Incredible work on the house, knocked it right out of the park! And the video of it was equally high quality. Great work man….GREAT work! 🤠👍🏼☮️
2:32:13 I must have missed part of the video somewhere… or maybe it’s a separate video? Can you point me where I’d find the video of you guys making the appliances?? That stove just appeared here, I want to see how you built it, especially the finish you put on it! 🤣

1:08:36 A carpenter pencil has flat sides with rectangular or elliptical cross-section for three main reasons: to keep it from rolling off the work surface, to allow for a wider and thicker lead, and to make it easier to grip, especially with work gloves.

I have always worked by myself building garages, decks, and other home type projects and property maintanence. One fall about 10 years ago I had to go look for employment. My sister hooked me up with a framing company. I knew how to build but again I always worked by myself. I joined a 3 man crew that had been working together building houses for years. I found out quickly that I didnt know the "proper" names and terminolgy for alot of stuff. being the new guy and odd man out felt very humbling and had me second guessing my every move. As soon as my other work for myself picked up I gave my notice to them. I was always in the way and slowing their process down. At least I felt I was. Those 3 guys would build 3-4 bed 2 story homes with attached 3 car garages, completely weather tight with windows, doors, roofing, tyvek and porches in 2 weeks give or take a day. Crazy.. So crews of guys who day in and day out build houses are able to do incredible shit, fast.

    Top tip
When using a hole cutter on ply or mdf board, start the hole to mark the circle and then drill a small 1/4 hole just inside the circle. All the sawdust will go down the 1/4 hole. This stops burning and if a cup is put underneath, all the dust will fall into the cup. Ideal in counter tops etc.
